Livy was safely away before I went down the next morning. After the high of our play the night before I wanted to tread carefully. If she found out about my war with Stevens, she would probably be none too pleased. It was impossible to know exactly how someone else might react, but the track record wasn’t good.

Some might ask why I’d been willing to risk it, and there really wasn’t a good answer. I wasn’t even sure myself. Taking on scumbags like Stevens wasn’t just a bad habit or from a sense of ego, it was a compulsion. An actual intense, driving need.

The feeling I would get from doing nothing when I knew there was something wrong, was worse than the most agonizing pain. That didn’t mean the kids had to suffer though, not again.

Carl was his own man, at least at that point, but I could have done a lot better when he was a boy. Allowed him a little less, and disciplined a little more. Made sure he was at least on the right track.
