"Here's the reward money for the assassination request, Mr?"
"Raven."
The sleazy old guild master of Broken Spirit looked at the hooded man called Raven with a cautious expression.
According to the rumors Raven had become a bounty hunter very recently. There was no record of him prior to this and no one had ever seen his face, only his chipped glowing mask
This made it very apparent that "Raven" was just a persona. The true identity of the masked man was completely unknown by both his clients and his victims.
Normally the sleazy old man wouldn't care about someone like this but there was something very special about Raven, he didn't have any magic signature.
It wouldn't be strange if he had a small amount of magic power but having no magic signature or magic power was very strange.
Everything that was alive had a particular magic signature, each different from each other. Having no magic signature meant that Raven had a special technique to block his magic signature.
This was obviously something the old grease ball wanted for his own guild to use. Many more jobs could be done far easier if his men had access to such a technique.
"So...how much for your special technique Mr. Raven."
Raven tapped his fingers against the table for a few seconds before responding, "I'll tell you a secret, it's not a technique but my own invention. If you can pay me an adequate sum I'll make a few for you and your best guild members."
"Hmm..."
'Should I cooperate with this bounty hunter? From the looks of it he seems to be from a disbanded guild or organization. Only that type of person would kill for a living.'
"May I see what type of invention this thing is beforehand."
"Of course."
Raven extended his hand and a little robotic looking spider crawled out from under it's sleeve.
"This is my personal invention, I call it a magic jammer. It's a small robot that follows the clearest source of magic power and attaches to it, blocking any magic signature from escaping."
The old man's eyes seemed to light up once he felt the robotic spider touch his hand and block his magic signature.
Not only was the robotic spider affective, it was capable of moving by itself by simply following the largest amount of magic power available.
'Its a pity that Broken Spirit doesn't have the capability to produce something like this. Otherwise I'd want to buy the method to make this incredible contraption.'
"It's an incredible invention Mr. Raven, may I ask how much one of these cost?"
"I'm sure you're aware of how valuable such an item is so I won't be polite. I'm willing to sell a single magic jammer for 100,000 jewels."
"Hmm..."
In comparison, 100,000 was well over the average mage's wage for a month. Even so, for something life changing like a magic jammer it was worth the investment.
With a magic jammer a mage could take much more dangerous jobs without the fear of being caught or put in danger. It would open up a person to various jobs that couldn't be done before like monster hunting or assassinations.
Healing magic is extremely rare and highly treasured by all guilds. Most mages couldn't afford to be treated and most guilds didn't have any way to provide healing for their members.
This was a deep rooted problem that couldn't be solved by just the magic jammer but it was a good way to prevent being harmed in the first place.
If this item was given to all mages the rate of death would lower dramatically and people would be able to do many more jobs without the risk of being hurt or killed.
"Mr. Raven, how many of these can you make given the time span of a month."
Raven chuckled a little before tilting his head up and pretending to think about it. In truth, he could make any number of magic jammers in just a few seconds given he has all the materials ready.
Of course, he wasn't going to say this. Raven could only have this beneficial partnership with Broken Spirit because he was unknown. If the slimy greaseball actually knew of Raven's weak strength and crafting system he'd immediately try and capture him to work for Broken Spirit.
Being weak was bad and being overly skilled would put him in danger. He had to show some type of balance between the two that didn't offset the guild master.
'Strength, that is what I need. A mere wrist blade or lacrima droid will not be enough. Solely focusing on the physical aspect of magic such as energy and chemical reactions is simply not enough. I must learn and master the spiritual aspect of magic as well.'
'Money is a necessity, I have no teacher, no allies or supporters, the only way to learn magic is through money. Since I need it so much I will do my all to gain a foothold in this world devoid of advanced technology.'
"100."
"What?"
The guild master of Broken Spirit thought he heard wrong.
"I can make a minimum of 100 magic jammers in one month. But I want my half my payment before hand, is that acceptable?"
"Well, I currently have over 300 guild members. I don't know whether I have the budget to supply all of them with a magic jammer but I'd like to order 50 now."
"Very well, should I come back in a few days to pick up the money?"
Slight hesitation crossed the guild master's face but he still shook his head in denial.
"I'll pay right now."
He pointed to his two guards standing at the door and gave them an unknown signal.
In just a few minutes, Raven walked out of the main guild building of Broken Spirit 5,000,000 jewels richer.
Feeling his future steadily becoming brighter a slight smile appeared behind the mask.
'I think I already know the teacher that I will seek in this dangerous world. I hope he accepts money.'
