Kapitel 9: 1.9

Enjoying the korma, Sam had bought me, I glanced through Fay's original phone. Such a simple and sweet girl going off her cute pokemon emojis and internet history.

I pondered on what files to keep and what to send over to the new phone that I'd started using when it arrived with the clothes earlier.

"What's with the phone upgrade?" Sam spoke, with a mouthful of naan bread.

"Don't speak with your mouth full, and I needed something faster," I shrugged, placing the still rather up-to-date and latest Samsung mobile onto the table.

"But your original phone is so great, what even is that?" She glanced at my new phone, one from a company I'd invested a lot of money into, Eden. This one would become on par with the top electronic brands in a few years.

Right now it was an underrated company, often overlooked, but its products were the best I could find and at such a decent price even middle-class workers could easily afford them.

"Do you want my old phone?" I asked, picking it back up and after ensuring its data was backed up on online storage, reset it.

"Really?" She excitedly squeaked, hands outstretched.

"Sure," I chuckled, finding her expression adorable, "follow me, Sam, I'll take you to great heights."

"Follow you in what?" She asked, holding the new phone like it was a precious and fragile gem.

"Everything," I smiled brightly, "I plan to set up a software company, if I recall right, you're also a computer science student right?"

"Yes, we have classes together every Thursday and Friday dummy," she tutted. Though they were in the same class, they never sat together or talked much. Only when Sam drunkenly came home and vented all her woes.

It wasn't that Sam did not like Fay or vice versa. Or that Sam ignored her. Just Fay was mistrustful of making friends after everyone had been so quick to believe the twins' lies.

Not to mention, every friend she made in high school turned on her just the same, until she became the bullied class reject. So pitiful.

'I'll give you a life you can be proud of,' I thought to myself, knowing that the original soul would be watching, waiting for my death. Then she would decide whether or not to give her soul to me.

If I got enough world energy and souls I could create my own universe. I could be a Goddess. But for now, I was just a simple immortal. Which meant I could never reincarnate again, only jump into the bodies of the dead.

"So what would I be doing, in this company?" She asked, interrupting my inner monologue.

"My personal assistant," I tucked into another mouthful of curry.

"Nice, I hope it'll pay better than that shitty cafe," she lamented into her wine. I glanced at the wine glass, my mind growing weak.

Warmth filled my abdomen from System, coaxing me to stay sober, clear-headed, and safe.

"I'll let you know when I've got it all set up and then give you the contracts, but for now, just keep on top of the room."

She nodded enthusiastically, "yes boss."

Another two boring days of classes passed peacefully as I focused on setting up the software company with my lawyer. I met her on the Thursday after class to hand the paperwork over and discussed my future plans.

She was a sweet young thing, full of promise, I thought I ought to give her a chance. If my investigations into her company were right, her current company was overlooking her talent for a sleazy man who took bribes.

By Friday evening, I had the contract ready for Sam, who happily rang up to quit her job on the spot after signing it.

With classes and the company sorted, I put all of my attention on searching for this secretive mother I'd inherited. Hayley Blaine, now going by the name of Anita Blackwood.

She had remarried and remarried well. That's if you thought a rich mafia husband was good enough. I knew just how dark and tormenting a life like that could lead.

So why? Why had she given up the title of CEO's wife? Why give up the fight to claim her rightful inheritance of her parents hard earned company?

Whoever they had on their side, protecting them electronically, was good, very good. It was not until Sunday night I'd found the marriage certificate.

When the chat pinged from Lucifer, my thoughts that he was monitoring this laptop were confirmed. I needed to get something better, but the parts to make it were taking their sweet time to make it to me.

[Lucifer: Like your new step-daddy?]

I flinched. Then I sneered at the camera, which he had most likely hacked. If he was so good, why was he paying me to do this?

[Lucifer: Don't twist that pretty face of yours now]

[Eve: For what sick reason are you even bothering to pay me for to do this?]

[Lucifer: Why else? My wife has been wronged and needs money]

I glared at the screen.

[Eve: What wife?]

An email popped up with an encrypted file.

My throat ran dry at its contents. A marriage certificate, between Lucien Drake and Fay Blaine. The smiling image of a handsome man, with dark silver hair and golden eyes, stared back at me. That fucker. I should have picked another room.

[Eve: Do you think it's funny to tease me like this? That's clearly a fake]

[Lucifer: It's legal, that's all you need to care about]

[Lucifer: and yes it's quite fun to tease my little wifey]

Who was little? I was five foot seven now, a whole three inches taller than in my last life.

[Eve: Shut up. Just tell me plainly, why are you getting me to do this?]

[Lucifer: Your step-daddy owes me a debt and your mother owes you answers, no?]

[Eve: I hope you're not using me for his debt]

[Lucifer: If I recall right, you used me twice now...]

I groaned, slamming the laptop lid down in a rage.

"What's wound you up boss?" Sam asked walking out of the ensuite in a towel.

"Nothing," I shoved on some trainers to go for a run to unwind. I really needed to work on getting this body strong, and fast. Before Fay's life decides to catch up to me...
