Out of a teacher's sense of responsibility, Adam managed to find a place for Shirley to stay.

Upon knowing Shirley's circumstances, he initially wanted to have her stay at his house, but then he realized what that might imply.

A single, male teacher taking in a female student at his house was bound to raise questions, no matter how it was viewed.

In the end, he turned to Addy once more and arranged for Shirley to stay with her.

Addy had a well-off household with parents who were renowned local business people. But they rarely had time to stay at home, and most of the time, Addy was home alone.

By having Shirley live with her, he could not only provide a place for her but also give Addy some company.
