50% Chasing Dreams: Becoming a Kpop Idol / Chapter 5: Solo Performance Video

Kapitel 5: Solo Performance Video

First things first

I'ma say all the words inside my head

I'm fired up and tired of the way that things have been, oh ooh

The way that things have been, oh ooh

Second things second

Don't you tell me what you think that I could be

I'm the one at the sail, I'm the master of my sea, oh ooh

The master of my sea, oh ooh

I was broken from a young age

Taking my sulking to the masses

Writing my poems for the few

That look at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me

Singing from heartache from the pain

Taking my message from the veins

Speaking my lesson from the brain

Seeing the beauty through the...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Pain!

You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer

Pain!

Oh let the bullets fly, oh let them rain

My life, my love, my drive, it came from...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Third things third

Send a prayer to the ones up above

All the hate that you've heard has turned your spirit to a dove, oh ooh

Your spirit up above, oh ooh

I was choking in the crowd

Building my rain up in the cloud

Falling like ashes to the ground

Hoping my feelings, they would drown

But they never did, ever lived, ebbing and flowing

Inhibited, limited

Till it broke open and rained down

It rained down, like...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Pain!

You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer

Pain!

Oh let the bullets fly, oh let them rain

My life, my love, my drive, it came from...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Last things last

By the grace of the fire and the flames

You're the face of the future, the blood in my veins, oh ooh

The blood in my veins, oh ooh

But they never did, ever lived, ebbing and flowing

Inhibited, limited

Till it broke open and rained down

It rained down, like...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Pain!

You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer

Pain!

Oh let the bullets fly, oh let them rain

My life, my love, my drive, it came from...

Pain!

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

Jiwoo was so immersed in the song that he couldn't speak for a while. The song was mostly percussive, with the chords arpeggiated on guitar, and a hint of bass appearing here and there. The choruses slam, though. The bass comes in full force, giving the chorus weight and depth. Similarly, Jiwoo can hear Wooin's vocals accompanied by layers and layers of more vocals that create an anthem-like feel in the chorus.

The song has a lot of beats that makes it suitable for dance covers.

Jiwoo just thought of one thing, 'My hyung is a genius.'

Wooin copied the song to Jiwoo's phone and Jiwoo hurriedly left.

"Hyung I'm gonna be at the dance studio if you need me!" He yelled while running.

Wooin laughed. He was happy that Jiwoo is enthusiastic about the song.

Truthfully, he was not the one who really composed and produced the song. It was entitled Believer and was sang by the band Imagine Dragons in his past life. It was a song that entered the top 10 charts of numerous countries like Australia, Canada, France, Italy, and more. It even topped the Billboard.

As the song was in English, Wooin's targeting foreign fans through this song. He wanted their group to be known worldwide and have a lot of foreign fans too. And he knew full well that Jiwoo is the perfect guy for the plan because in his past life, although Jiwoo is not that famous in Korea, he's got the most foreign fans.

While Jiwoo is busy making dance choreography, Wooin busied himself with finalizing the songs that Jisuk and Gangseok will use for their solo performance video.

If this performance videos goes as planned, they might really gather their personal fans.

After a while, Wooin contacted their manager— Kim Soohyuk, which their mom introduced to them just earlier. Wooin asked him to find a studio where they can film their solo performances.

Wooin felt that people will get tired of watching them perform in the dance studio inside their house. And now that they have a personal manager to handle everything, Wooin intend to create the best solo performance as much as they can. And the first part of that, is to find the best place to film their performance. He wanted a place where they can enhance the quality of the video using different stage lighting.

Different stage lighting can change the whole vibe of a performance. For example, a red lighting evokes powerful emotions such as anger and passion. It can also create an intimidating vibe. Wooin wanted to create a virtual simulation, like they were performing on real stage where there will be lights and smokes that illuminate their performance. He wanted the viewers to feel like they are watching a live performance on stage because in that way, they will feel more satisfied than usual.

This is some of the things that Wooin learned from his past life. Because in his past life, the dance practice videos of k-idols get few views as compared to their MV. This is because fans got tired of watching k-idols dancing and performing their songs in the same background and setting— their dance practice room.

Wooin knew that they can't film a music video yet so he is relying on making a good quality performance video.

Kim Soohyuk, their manager, promised to find them the best studio available to film their videos. After thanking him, Wooin ended the call.

It is still Monday, and they have to attend school until Friday. They can only film on Saturday, during their weekend rest.

'That's a bit late.' Wooin thought. He is worried that people will get bored waiting for their next move.

Wooin called his friend. "Hey Gangseok, give me an advice."

"Advice on what."

"I am thinking of filming again. But we can only do that on Saturday. That's about 5 days away. So I'm worried that our fans or people that's anticipating our next move will get bored waiting. What should I do?"

"Can't we move the date?"

"What? Silly! Of course not. We have to attend school."

"Right."

Gangseok remained silent for a while. Probably thinking of a solution, so Wooin waited patiently.

"Then why not release a teaser?" Gangseok suggested.

Wooin thought that he was stupid for a second. How come he did not think of that. Of course releasing teasers is a good way to update people and make them anticipate more!

"That was brilliant! Thanks!" Wooin ended the call and he focused himself on editing.

He put the pre-recorded music or playback of the song Believer which Jiwoo would dance. Of course, he will not include the vocals, just the backgound music. But that alone is enough to show that their next song is gonna be great.

The teaser video is only 30 seconds long.

He opened their WeTube channel and that was when he finally saw WeTube's official message asking for a partnership program and of course, Wooin replied, accepting their offer. It was good knowing that they will also earn some money through their videos.

He also saw that they already have 800,000 subscribers and they only created their channel 2 days ago. Their dance practice video of 'Sorry, Sorry' has already 900,000 views.

Feeling motivated, Wooin uploaded their teaser with a title:

[DAWN] 'Believer' Teaser featuring KANG JIWOO

He then wrote a message as a subtitle:

Hello everyone! This is DAWN.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to everyone that supports us in pursuing music. Thank you so much and we hope that all of you will remain with us throughout our journey.

This is a teaser for our next song featuring Kang Jiwoo of DAWN. The title of the song is 'Believer' and it is about a declaration of a person who has experienced great pain in life but who has learned important things about him/herself through those experiences.

We wish to give hope and encouragement to those who are currently experiencing pain. We wanted to remind everyone to believe in yourselves.

We're gonna release the song on Saturday so please wait for us. We apologize for the delay because we have to attend school until Friday.

Again, thank you so much everyone!

-DAWN

When he was satisfied, he uploaded it on their WeTube channel.

He then walked out the recording studio and went to the dance studio where Jiwoo is making dance choreography.

Wooin took a picture of his brother without him noticing. Wooin then edited the picture and turned it into a black and white one.

The photo turned out good. He posted it on their Istagram account and attached the link to their teaser video. He wrote a caption— On Frame: Jiwoo's practice for the song 'Believer'.

-----

(Tuesday)

Nothing much happened on their day at school.

They are now at Wooin's recording studio. Their class already ended. Jisuk and Gangseok is here because Wooin will give them the song that they are gonna perform for the solo video.

But before that, Wooin opened his WeTube app to see the reaction of people on their teaser.

Netizens commented:

@jiwoo_the_cutest: I am sooo looking forward to the song release.

@wooin's_wife: The song seems to be so good just from the teaser. Another masterpiece from my Wooin.

@lazy_bug: This is so awesome, I'm getting goosebumps.

"Your teaser's getting a lot of positive reactions." Yoo Jisuk congratulated Jiwoo.

"Of course! Who am I?" Jiwoo said in a proud voice.

"You basically owe it to Wooin-hyung. Hope you realize that." Wooin laughed at Jisuk's remark.

"Jisuk, listen to this and let me know what you think." Wooin played three songs.

"I like the first song hyung!" Honestly, Jisuk liked all of the song. As expected of his Wooin-hyung. It's just that he felt like he could ace the first song. He felt a connection with it.

"Okay then, you will use this for your song performance. Do you want to perform it live or do you want to record it?" Wooin asked.

"Live of course." Yoo Jisuk said confidently.

"That makes my work easier." Wooin nodded as he only needed to prepare the pre-recorded background music and Jisuk is all set.

Wooin gave Jisuk a printed copy of the lyrics. He also copied the demo song in his phone so he can practice individually.

Wooin then looked at Gangseok. In their 10 years together, they spent some time producing rap music. Wooin took that as an opportunity to introduce some of the rap music in his past life. And that's why, Wooin already has a folder of rap music playlist that he and Gangseok produced together. And yes, those songs can be considered as masterpieces too.

"What song would you like to perform?" Wooin asked as he opens the folder— Gangseok Music Style.

"Can you play Killing Me and My Type? I'll choose between the two." Gangseok said and Wooin obliged.

After listening to the two songs, Gangseok decided. "I'll just go with My Type."

'My only problem now is choosing what song I'm gonna sing. It's hard to choose because I know a lot of hit songs.' Wooin sighed.

Wooin scrolled down his folders. A song caught his eye. It was 'Shinunoga E-wa'. A japanese song that reached over 30 million views in his past life.

'Then let's go with this.' Wooin decided.

(Saturday)

WeTube users like @wooin's_wife, @jiwoo_the_cutest, @lazy_bug, and others opened their app and went to the official channel of DAWN.

They are currently waiting for the group's upload.

At exactly 7 in the evening, they finally received notifications.

People knew that the group will upload a video, but what they didn't expect, was them uploading 4 videos at a time.

Right. After uploading a teaser of the song 'Believer', Wooin did not upload anything. So people had no idea that aside from Jisuk, there will be 3 more videos featuring each of the three.

***

The WeTube user, @jiwoo_the_cutest, opened Jiwoo's video first because she is obviously a Jiwoo stan.

The intro of the song played and it showed a silhouette of someone dancing which she assumed is Jiwoo's. The dance was awesome. It followed every beat of the song.

After a while, light shone and she can finally see Jiwoo's face clearly. It was a completely different setting from their previous dance video. It was not filmed in their usual dance practice studio. Rather, the background is completely black but Jiwoo stood out with his pure white clothes. Jiwoo is wearing a silk long-sleeve paired with white trousers and white shoes. His silk top sways with his every move. It looked sexy.

Jiwoo was under a red spotlight. The combination of the black background and red lights made the vibe dark and somewhat lonely. It fits the concept of the song 'Believer' which is— pain.

Jiwoo's dance moves were powerful, like someone who's expressing his anger and pain. The camera moves and shows different angles of Jiwoo. And sometimes, the lights will flicker and accentuates some of the lyrics. It was cool.

@jiwoo_the_cutest can feel the different emotions that the song wanted to convey. Her eyes started to water.

She actually just came out of a toxic relationship and the song comforted her. She thought that maybe, somewhere in the world, someone is having a more painful experience than her. After thinking that, she felt like she was healed and she realized that being depressed over a worthless person (his ex-boyfriend) is a waste of time. And is shallow compared to other people's pain.

After she finished watching she left a comment on the video.

@jiwoo_the_cutest: This is legendary! Jiwoo rose my standards so much! Like, is he even real?! Tell me that he exists. I just realized that if it's not Jiwoo, I'll never marry anyone! Just don't tell me his address cause I might lose my self-control and just kidnap him anytime.

The user, @jiwoo_the_cutest copied the link of the video and posted it on her social media accounts, telling her friends to watch it.

She is actually the president of their university's music club so she has a lot of followers. Those followers checked the video as they knew of her good reputation and taste in music.

And they loved it.

***

On the other hand, the WeTube user @wooin's_wife clicked the video with a title: [DAWN] 'Shinunoga E-wa' featuring KANG WOOIN

Of course she would, as she is a Wooin stan.

The screen showed Wooin, who is standing while holding a white colored microphone. He is wearing a pink colored silk long-sleeve, showing his deep collar bones. His top was tucked in a white slacks. He is wearing a white leader shoes.

His backdrop was plain white. But it was decorated with floweres which made it look like he was in a garden. A white spotlight was focused in him. It really looked like a stage performance.

The intro of the song is calming and has a sweet melody. @wooin's_wife guessed that he's going to sing a love song.

After a while, the painful wait is finally over as Wooin started singing.

Yubikiri genman hora demo fuitara

Son'na dasai no wa mō iranai no yo bye-bye

I'll always stick with ya, my baby

The song's chorus is addicting. It was calm and the melody is just chef's kiss. The song captivated @wooin's_wife. It was a poetic love song and she can't help but scream as she felt like Wooin was singing it for her. The song was in japanese but there was a subtitle below and just reading at the korean translation of the lyrics makes her melt. It was a sweet confession of love.

@wooin's_wife is the type of girl who finds it difficult to commit. She easily gets bored that's why she does not have a permanent hobby. She had tried almost everything. She tried painting, reading, watching movies, but she gave up after a while cause she no longer find it thrilling.

However, after meeting DAWN, she finally found something that will be her constant. She decided that she will be DAWN's number 1 fan.

@wooin's_wife created a group chat and added the WeTube users that she frequently saw in the comment section of DAWN' s videos.

That was how the admins of the fandom AXIS started. The admins were @wooin's_wife, @jiwoo_the_cutest, @lazy_bug, and @song_listener.

***

The WeTube user, @song_listener clicked the video with the title:

[DAWN] 'Life Goes On' featuring YOO JISUK

@song_listener fell in love with Jisuk's vocals ever since she heard their song 'Sorry, Sorry'. Of course she also liked the other three but Jisuk's voice left a deep impression on her because of his angel-like voice.

She was greeted by a forest showed in the LED screen panel backdrop. Jisuk is sitting on a wooden bench covered with vines. There are smokes everywhere so Jisuk looked like he was in a smokey forest.

Jisuk is wearing a white sweatshirt and white sweatpants paired with a white converse shoes. He looked comfy. He was holding his mic which is color white.

Contrary to the somewhat dull and gloomy backdrop, the intro of the song is uplifting.

Jisuk started singing.

Like an echo in the forest

Haruga doraogetji

Amu ildo eopdan deusi

Yeah, life goes on

Like an arrow in the blue sky

The song sounds folky. It was accompanied by drums, electronic beats, melodic rhymes, and harmonies which made it sound trendy and comforting at the same time. The song radiates positive energy. It was healing and warm.

'In a world where musicians and artists in general produces music with heavy and loud accompaniments, this song is a masterpiece.' @song_listener thought. She was actually getting tired of recent songs from artists that hurt her ears because of their intense and distorted aggressive sounds. So she was really happy and relieved that there are still people who can produce such a soft and comforting song.

@song_listener decided to change her username into: @jisuk_no.1

***

WeTube user @lazy_bug clicked the video with a title: [DAWN] 'My Type' featuring CHOI GANGSEOK

The screen showed Gangseok leaning against a wall full of graffiti. He was wearing a brown colored shorts topped with plain white shirt and cream colored polo.

His outfit looked like those typical soft boys would wear, contrary to Gangseok's strong facial features. But it only added to his charm.

Gangseok started his performance.

It was a rap-vocal song but it was not harsh on the ears. It was carefree and light. The beats and melody of the song makes you want to dance. Plus, Gangseok looked like he's enjoying himself. You really can't help but to like it. The song was different from the usual heavy and metallic beats of rap-vocal songs but she liked and enjoyed the freshness of the song. She felt like she just listened to a whole new different genre.

She then realized again that DAWN is the most talented and versatile group she came across with.
