Harry had never seen Hermione pass out like that. He tried to revive her, but she did not respond. It was probably best to give her some time to recover. Instead, he went over to her desk and found the device that showed the Trackers. He turned it on, hoping against hope that Rose would still be one of the moving dots. At first, he didn't find it amongst all the others. He started to panic. Did that mean she was dead? Why had he let this happen?! He searched for the missing Death Eaters' dots. They were all together in the middle of the sea. And Rose was with them. She was alive! But what had happened to her? Had she helped the prisoners escape, unwittingly, or no? Why was she with them? As far as he could see, none of the other guards were with them, at least none of the new recruits or the top-security guards Hermione had tagged.
He heard Hermione get to her feet. She ripped the device out of his hands and studied it. He heard the same sigh of relief when she saw that her daughter was still alive. Then the same gasp when she realised where she was.
"Where are they going?" she asked eventually. "They are in the middle of the ocean, moving far away from Azkaban, but also away from the mainland."
Harry had noticed that too. "Maybe they are headed to another country? They know we will search everywhere for them here. What is the closest country from where they are now? Denmark?"
"No, Norway. I'll send them an emergency alert immediately. I'll request that we can be there to assist when they land. That would allow us to inform them ahead of time that Rose is there, but disguised as a young man, and that she most likely is a hostage, not a collaborator."
As usual, Hermione was thinking one step ahead of him. He hadn't thought further than figuring out where they would land. Hermione was already on her way out the door. Harry quickly moved after her.
"What do we do about Azkaban? From what I can see, it will be another day at the least before the Death Eaters can land anywhere. Unless they suddenly get a faster boat or fly."
"We should deal with Azkaban first, yes. But the problem is, by this point, Barnsby will have turned most of the guards and staff to his side. They may fight us if we try to take him out with force. Right now, our greatest advantage is that he doesn't know that we know what he is doing."
They went into the elevators. Luckily, they had one for themselves.
"If something happens to her, I can never forgive myself." Hermione said once the doors were shut. "I don't know what has come over me lately. You are right, I should never have sent her there, or at least I should have made her do some basic training first. But I suspected that she would have found a way to get there anyway, so I decided to let it happen in a way I could control. Or I thought I could. I…I should have known better."
Harry squeezed her hand. He knew why she had waited until they were out of sight of anyone else to say this. "Don't think about that just now. She will probably be fine. If they wanted to kill her, they would have done it in Azkaban."
"Not necessarily. They could just bide their time until they are far enough away from the prison and dump the body overboard."
"Unlikely. They would have done so already. No, they need a scapegoat, and he was the first they found. I bet you Barnsby will say that it was Kevin that broke out the prisoners this time. He may even suggest that he tried to stop them, and the guard was killed in front of him. But if they kill Kevin right after, that story doesn't hold up." Hermione squeezed his hand back. It wasn't much, but it was something to hold on to.
Harry didn't say it out loud, but his main concern was what would happen if the Death Eaters found out who Rose was. He didn't know exactly how she was disguised, but he suspected they would find out that she was a woman, if they searched her. How they would react to that revelation, he did not want to guess. Knowing what they had done to Albus and Scorpius, he also didn't want to think about what they would do to Rose Malfoy, if they discovered what a valuable hostage they had.
They finally arrived in the Department for Magical Cooperation. One of the leaders there came up to them.
"I need a direct line to the Minister for Magic in Norway on an emergency alert." Hermione said. Short and to the point. The poor man probably sensed her mood, because he didn't ask any unnecessary questions, just ran to get it done.
It took a long 30 minutes. Hermione walked in circles, looking like a thundercloud. When one of the employees tried to ask if they needed something, or wanted to sit down, she simply growled at him. The tea tray that was delivered by a shaky intern was ignored.
Finally, the fireplace communication was open. The conversation was quick. There were protocols for these sorts of situations. It was not the first time Dark Wizards crossed international borders to attempt to escape capture. In just a few minutes Hermione had explained the situation and Harry was authorised to take a team of Aurors via Portkey to Norway to assist in the arrest when the Death Eaters landed. The Norwegians were very clear, however, that it would be them that led the operation. The British would only be there to assist. Hermione agreed to this reluctantly. They had both agreed that Rose's involvement would not be revealed until they were there. It was not something they could risk anyone else, on either side, overhearing.
"Now for Azkaban," Hermione said once they had finished.
"How should we approach this? We shouldn't go in all wands out. But we can't let any of them get away either." Harry said.
"I don't think it would be strange if we bring a group of Aurors. He has alerted us of a major security breach after all."
"We can catch them off guard. Use your new Apparating spot. That way, we can subdue most of them without giving them time to alert someone."
"They are expecting us. Barnsby himself sent for us."
"Yes, but he thinks he has hours yet. And he thinks we will arrive by sea, where he can control who we meet first and what is said."
"You are right. We need to use whatever moments of surprise we have."
Harry quickly called in all available Aurors. He split them in two. One team would be ready to travel with him to Norway on a moment's notice, the second team would go with them to Azkaban. They also agreed that if Harry had not returned from Azkaban within 12 hours, the Aurors would go on to Norway without him. That way, if this first part went poorly, or took longer than expected the job in Norway would still go ahead as planned. He left an envelope with the details about Rose that was to be opened only if he did not return. This was not the first time this had happened, and he trusted his team to follow orders.
After a quick briefing, they were ready to travel to Azkaban. Harry just hoped that they would not have to fight the entire guard force before they could leave again.
