Kapitel 12: Defeated

Rose couldn't help feeling a bit satisfied. It was nice to be taken seriously. It had felt right to take the lead, even with all those high-ranking Ministry officials and her mother there. But as she walked down the passage again, she got a bit more nervous as well. What would be awaiting her when she came back? Had Scorpius woken up yet? What about the other Death Eaters? She didn't know how strong the Sleeping powder was.

As they walked in, her mother stopped next to her, for once not running first into the action. Instead, she gave her another tight hug.

"I am very proud of you Rose," she said as they held onto each other. "I would like to hear your whole story later but for now, just know that I am proud of you. And whatever is wrong with Scorpius, I am sure it can be reversed."

"Thank you. Albus thinks it may be a form of Compulsion, some form of Dark magic anyway. He was all spaced out, barely responsive at first. Lestrange said…" Rose's voice faltered. "He said that he would eventually be turned to the Dark Side permanently, but other aspects would not change, such as his love for me. He was so out of it because he was fighting it, but he has gotten more and more responsive. I just pray we are not too late." Tears formed in her eyes as her mother held her even more tightly.

"Come on. I need to go find Scorpius." With some trepidation, Rose went through the hole and back to the bunker that had been her free-range prison for the last four days.

She was met with a most satisfying sight. The Death Eaters were all captured and secured with invisible bonds. They were all still asleep and their heads were hanging down. Rose almost laughed. Until she saw Scorpius. The sight of him in restraints brought up so many bad memories. Her mother squeezed her shoulder sympathetically, probably realising what Rose felt at the sight. Rose almost tore herself away from her, as memories of who had placed him in handcuffs also came up to the surface. But then she held on tight again.

Just then, Scorpius started to move, waking up. Rose was behind him, but when she started moving towards him, her mother held her back. "Wait and see how he reacts first. We don't know exactly what the potion-induced sleep did with his mind. It may have healed him somewhat, or it may have made it worse. Just wait for a little while." she whispered. Rose ached to run over to Scorpius, but she stayed put.

Scorpius looked around, bewildered. "Where am I?" he asked. "What happened?" He looked around again and seemed to notice the captured Death Eaters for the first time. "Why are they restrained? Have we done something wrong? I don't understand."

Harry walked over and placed himself in front of Scorpius. He didn't smile, but he didn't look angry either. Scorpius looked up at him, but there was no hostility in his gaze. In fact, he smiled as he saw Harry.

"Harry! Why are you here? Have you captured all of them?" Then it was as if he suddenly remembered something. "Where is Rose? Have they killed her? Where is she?" He tried to get up, but Harry held him down. Rose couldn't take it anymore. She ran over to him.

"Scorpius! You're awake!" Scorpius turned around at the sound of her voice and smiled at her. When she came close enough, he embraced her, and she went down on the floor next to him.

"There you are! Is this your fault? What did you do that for? I was so worried!"

Rose froze. That was not the response she had hoped for. "Do what? I managed to get out and keep us both alive. That was the plan, remember?"

"Get out? No, that is too dangerous! They will kill us if they think we tried to get out. We need to stay here."

"They can't hurt us now. Look, they are all captured. And they will be sleeping for several hours. Come, Scorpius, we need to get out of here. We need to go see Albus at the hospital."

"Albus is in the hospital? Why?"

"They beat him up. Remember that I told you that? I had to leave to get him to the hospital."

"No, Albus wasn't here. They would never think he would go over to them again. They just wanted to be left alone. Crabbe said so."

"No, they wanted revenge. They were about to hurt your father as well. Lestrange told me."

"You shouldn't listen to everything Lestrange says. He is still a bit crazy."

Scorpius didn't even seem to notice Harry or any of the others anymore. His eyes were not as dazed as they had been. Rose didn't know whether that was a good sign or a bad sign. But how could she get him to come with them out of here?

"It's in the syrup, isn't it?" Hermione suddenly asked behind her. Rose nodded. Hermione then went over and fixed a small piece of pancake with lots of syrup on it. She handed it to Rose. "He probably won't accept anything I give him." she said with a sympathetic voice. Rose took the pancake with trembling hands. "Here Scorpius." she said with a fake cheer. "Have some more lunch. I am sure we can sort this all out." Scorpius smiled at her and eagerly ate the pancake. After a few more minutes, still with a huge smile on his face, he dropped down on the floor, asleep again. Rose caught him just before his head hit the floor. She cried and held him tightly. Hermione bent down and comforted her.

"He might be better when he is out of here." Harry said after a while. "He has clearly been conditioned to stay here and has convinced himself that that is the only way to keep you safe." He sighed as he helped them place the sleeping Scorpius onto a stretcher. "We need to get him to St. Mungo's as well. Hopefully they can fix him up there."

One of the Aurors walked over to Harry. "Nine Death Eaters accounted for, sir, not counting him." he pointed to Scorpius.

"Nine?" Rose asked from the floor. "Are you sure? It is supposed to be ten."

"Have you searched everywhere?" Harry asked. "All the other rooms?"

"Yes, sir. The other passage here is clear, so it may be that someone escaped through that, but the lock was in from the inside, so it is unlikely."

"They talked about a mission." Rose remembered suddenly. "Do any of you know where Draco Malfoy is going to be today?"

"Draco? Why?"

"He was the target. Originally, they were hoping that Scorpius would help them to kidnap him, but they didn't want to wait. Lestrange said something about Draco exposing himself again. I don't know what he meant. But maybe one of them has already gone to find him?"

Harry and Hermione looked at each other. "We sent Draco an owl yesterday, telling him what had happened," Harry admitted. "He has been out of the country for a few days but said he would return today to help with the search. He is due with a Portkey in a few hours." Harry quickly assigned three Aurors, the three that were the best at disguises, to keep watch at the Portkey destination ground and secure Draco when he got there. And, if possible, to apprehend the last Death Eater.

"At least it is not Lestrange" Rose said. "I very quickly learned that he is the worst of them. I don't know all their names, but it is not Crabbe, Goyle, Avery, or Nott either."

"Let's get to St. Mungo's." Hermione said. "We need to get a Healer to check out Scorpius and I want to know how Albus is doing. And they should check you as well, to make sure that they have not left any residual memory charm on you."

"I'm fine," Rose protested. "I just need to know that Scorpius will be okay."
