Kapitel 53: Is this Spartan Fire?
Kit instantly became alert.
"Quick hide! No matter what, do not follow me!" Twix pushed Kit towards a group of trees with a worried look on his face then rushed forwards. Before Kit could register what was happening, he started to feel the ground shaking. Was it an earthquake?
Mars grabbed Kit's shirt and Pint's lead and dragged them behind a tree. Kit sneaked his head around the tree to see what was going on. Suddenly a loud bang resounded in the forest and a tree exploded from something colliding into the trunk. Once all the debris had cleared Kit could see Twix engaged in a fight with a large beast that looked like an enormous earth worm.
Except this earth worm was the size of a two storey building and had a mouth full of sharp teeth. Kit watched in amazement as Twix lifted his staff and a bolt of lightning shot towards the creature. Lines of blue electricity spread out over the monster once the bolt of lightning reached its target.
The monster twisted and thrashed as the lightning pulsed around its body. Twix didn't stay still after the bolt landed on the monster. He shot two more bolts at the creature in quick succession. He easily moved around the thrashing creature staying out of harm's way.
Beside him Kit heard a rustle, then he saw Mars running towards the creature. Kit gaped at Mars. He truly was crazy when it came to fighting monsters. Mars started throwing his flaming knives at the creature he was laughing with delight as they exploded against the large worm.
The pair continued to assault the monster. Kit quite happily stayed safe behind the tree with Pint. He wasn't silly enough to engage. He knew the monster was well above his ability to engage safely in the fight. As he was happily watching the fight eating imaginary popcorn, the monster let out an ear-piercing scream.
Kit's eyes went wide as he saw the creature thud to the ground. It was over so soon! Kit was a little disappointed he had been thoroughly enjoying the show.
"RUN!" Twix let out a mighty bellow alarming Kit.
Kit frowned in confusion. Had the fight not ended? Kit looked over at the immobile creature, then he sucked in a breath at what he was seeing. The large worm was starting to glow, a wind started to whip around Kit. He could see the monster start to stir. It once again raised it body, it slowly opened it large mouth and started to suck air inside its body.
Its body started to swell, soon its body was twice the size. Kit stared in horror as it turned towards his direction and started to let out its breath. He could visibly see a large ball of air hurtling his way. He had no time to move. The speed of the large ball was terrifying. Kit shut his eyes and braced himself for impact. He knew he was about to die.
Kit heard a sizzling sound surround his body. He opened his eyes in time to see the huge ball of air collide with a blue electrical barrier surrounding his and Pint's body. The barrier shook with the impact but didn't break.
Kit let out a relieved breath. He was happy to still be alive. He then turned his gaze to Twix. He had an idea of how he was saved from death. Twix smiled at him and waved. As Kit was about to return the gesture, he saw a ball of air shoot towards the unprepared Twix.
"LOOK OUT"
Twix whipped his staff around in time to collide with the ball of air. The air dispersed on impact with the staff. The creature seemed to realise that Twix was harder to kill than it had originally thought. It let out another scream then dived back into the ground. Just like that the fight was over.
Kit gazed around at the destruction that surrounded them. Trees were pulled up by the roots and broken branches were scattered all around. Kit was thankful that they had Twix along for the journey. Kit realised they would have had no hope to fight something like this by themselves.
The forsaken state wasn't a place for low level players like them. Kit was even more grateful towards Twix for escorting them to Spartan Fire. He ran over to Twix to thank him but as he approached, he realised something was wrong with Twix. His face was haggard, and his body was trembling. He gave Kit a small smile then passed out.
Kit caught him as he was about to hit the ground. He gently laid him on the grass. Kit started to panic at the unconscious state of Twix.
"Mars what happened to him?"
"I don't know. But my guess is he used too much magic."
The pair glanced at Twix with concerned eyes.
"What do we do then?"
"We just need to replenish his magica and he should regain consciousness, I think."
"Do you have anything to replenish magica on you?"
Mars took out a small blue glass vile. Then lifted Twix head and poured the contents inside his mouth. Kit stared at the young man anxiously waiting for him to make a small movement so he could gage if he would be alright.
Soon Twix eyes began to flutter. Kit let out a relived breath. Kit continued to watch Twix, soon his eyes slowly opened.
"Twix are you alright?"
The young man stared at Kit with a vague expression.
"Kit, give him time to come around."
Kit patiently waited for light to return to Twix' eyes. Soon colour returned to Twix' pale face. He weakly lifted his hand and retrieved a potion from his pouch and emptied the contents in his mouth. After Twix ingested the potion, he recovered at a visible rate.
"Ahh… Thank you for helping me recover."
"Of course, we would help. But Twix what happened to you? Why did you pass out like that?"
"The barrier I set up around you is a little unstable when used on other people, so I encountered a backlash."
Kit felt awful. It had been his fault Twix had passed out. If the monster had not left, Twix could have died from an attack he couldn't defend against. Tears pooled in his eyes, Twix had risked his life to save him.
"You don't do that again. I can respawn at Red Splash village you can't."
Kit wanted to make it clear to his new friend that it was not acceptable to put his life at risk for him.
"Kit you were in danger. It is my responsibility as a higher level person to keep you safe."
Kit wanted to smack him over the head at his response. Kit decided not to hold back and smacked Twix.
"Oww, what was that for?"
"You, being stupid! What did I just say! I can respawn even if I die, you can't. Also, who will guide me through the forest if you're dead, hmm... Do you want me to go through thousands of agonising deaths each time I venture inside?"
Kit decided to make Twix feel responsible for guiding him through the forest so the man wouldn't do something stupid again, like risk his life for him.
"I didn't think of that. Sorry I will be more careful in the future."
Kit was happy with his reply. He counted Twix as a friend now, through the time spent traveling to Spartan Fire they had become close. Kit didn't want to lose him to a situation that could be avoided.
'Good. Now once you are feeling better, let's head to Spartan Fire so we can have a good rest and something to eat."
It didn't take long for Twix to fully recover, and the party was soon on the move once again. Twix entertained them with stories from his childhood as they walked. He felt like he already knew Twix' family very well.
As the party reached the end of the forest Spartan Fire came into view. Kit sucked in his breath at the sight. Looking at his new surroundings Kit finally remembered where he had heard the name Spartan Fire from before.
It was when Boots recognised his bag and told him how his bag was also a creation of Cedula's. Kit felt a jolt of excitement run through his body. Kit was now certain they had come to the right place to find the treasure.
"Twix, is this Spartan Fire?"
"Yes, beautiful isn't it."
Kit eyes passed over the surrounding scenery. It really was a picturesque location. It looked like it was straight out of a travel guide. In front of him was a vast field of green grass. Enormous mountains with snow-caps could be seen in the distance behind the fields. Kit counted five snow covered mountain tops.
Kit could just make out a large lake with crystal blue water that was at the base of the mountains. Kits eyes locked on an odd shape off to the side of the lake. A Giant rock formation in the shape of a sleeping cat entered Kits eyes. The top of the rock was covered in a dark green colour. Kits heart started to beat wildly.

He felt like his heart was going to break out of his chest. This was what they had been searching for. It was identical to the map. Somewhere on one of those mountains was the entrance to the Black winged fire bird cave.
Kit's body was starting to feel light. His heart was beating so fast his body was starting to lack oxygen. He could feel the adrenalin pumping around his veins. A ringing had started in his ears. Kit felt like he was going to pass out from happiness.
A strange laugh escaped his mouth. Twix turned to stare at Kit after he made the abnormal sound.
"Kit are you ok?"
Kit couldn't make a sound. He was in a state of shock and found it difficult to respond.
"Mars I think there is something wrong with Kit. Mars? Why are both of you dazed. I know Spartan Fire is beautiful, but this is a little bit of abnormal behaviour at seeing it."
Twix waved his hand in front of Kit's face.
"Hello Kit, are you in there? I'm starting to get worried. Did something happen. Maybe I should get Grandpa."
Twix started to fidget. Kit could see him starting to panic. He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself down. He didn't want to worry his new friend. Kit slowly felt his heart start to slow down. He could no longer feel the thumping against his rib cage.
"Twix, it's ok. Mars and I have just been hoping to find this place for a while now. We are just excited about finding it."
"You have been searching for Spartan Fire? What for?"
Kit groaned internally at his slip of the tongue. He had been so excited at finding the place on the map he forgot Twix didn't know anything about it. Twix had slowly fallen into being their friend over the journey from Red Splash village that it had become natural to share his thoughts with him.
Even though he was an NPC Kit thought of him as a new friend. Twix had gone out of his way to help the two of them at first meeting without asking for anything in return. He wouldn't mind sharing some of the secrets of the map with his new friend. Kit trusted him as much as he did Mars after their interactions over the journey to Spartan Fire.
Kit was surprised at his thoughts. Twix would be the second person he trusted in the game since he started playing. He wondered what Mars thought of him.
"Twix, can you give Kit and I a moment please."
Twix looked hurt at Mars request. He bowed his head and moved away out of ear shoot. Kit raised his eyebrows at Mars, he wondered what was going on. It was unlike Mars to be rude.
"He is not so bad. I think it would be beneficial to tell him a little bit about what we are after. He knows this place very well. I don't think we will be able to navigate the mountain without him." Mars kept his eyes on Twix as he spoke.
"Mars if he comes with us, he will be putting himself in danger. He can't respawn like us. I already think of him as a friend, so I don't want any harm to come to him."
"Kit, he is level 240 he won't be easy to kill."
Mars sighed and rubbed his face. "I do agree that he has become a friend. Even if he is an NPC, I quite like him as well. How about we give him a choice if he wants to come or not. If he answers yes, we can tell him about the map. I won't mind sharing the treasures if he is risking his life with us."
Kit felt excited about adding one more to their team. Even though it was one more person to split the treasure with, Kit didn't think they would be able to reach the cave without Twix help. He hoped Twix would agree.
"Twix you can come back." Twix walked over with uncertain steps. Kit felt guilty about letting Mars send him off so they could talk.
"Twix, we want to ask you something. If we go up that mountain, would you come with us?"
Twix paused and actually thought properly about their request. "Yes, I don't think I would be able to rest well at night if I let you go up by yourselves. I would worry too much. But this is a mute point. You can't even pass the entrance to the mountains without being level 100."
Kit felt all the blood drain from his face. 'Level 100, how long would that take. I don't even know if I can reach that level before my time is up for the next subscription renewal. Did we just come all the way here for nothing?'
Next to him Mars had sucked in a breath at those words. His eyes were fixed on the mountains. Kit felt his legs lose all their strength and fell to the ground. He had put all his hope into finding that treasure to save his dreams. He felt numb.
Twix was shocked by their behaviour. He walked over to Kit and crouched down. "Kit, is it important you make it up the mountain?"
Kit could only nod his head. Mars came over and put his arm over Kit's shoulder in a comforting gesture.
"Ok then we get you to level 100 as fast as we can then. I'll ask Grandpa the best way to do that. Don't panic, ok. We will figure it out."
Twix had a soft smile on his face. Kit was thankful for his kind words. He started to tear a little. Twix had returned hope back to Kit that they could advance to level 100 before his time was up. Looking at Twix' level Kit really thought it would be possible if Twix' Grandpa helped.
"Thank you Twix, that would be fantastic!" Kit felt a familiar warm sensation in his heart. It was nice to have friends. Kit finally felt like some old wounds in his heart were starting to patch together.
"Twix would you like to join our team. It is a permanent team. Even if you are not with one of us you would still be part of it. What do you think?"
Kit snaped his head towards Mars when he heard the words from his friend. Kit felt happy that Mars thought of Twix the same way he did. They were going to add another friend to their team. Kit swung his head back to look at Twix with hopeful eyes. Twix currently had a funny look frozen on his face. Kit couldn't help but laugh at his expression.
"This … Let me start again. Are you sure that's ok? I have never been part of a team before."
Kit grabbed his hand and nodded his head. "Of course, its ok. We already think of you as a friend."
Twix looked at Kit then Mars with joy on his face. "This is great. I have not had friends before."
Kit blinked. This sounded oddly familiar. Was he collecting a batch of friendless weirdos. Though in Twix' case it was probably due to growing up in an isolated area. Kit thought about it some more, then realised he was probably a weirdo too. So having strange friends should be normal for him.
"What is the name of our team?" Twix asked the question innocently, Kit burst out laughing.
"Shut up." Mars gave him a death glare.
"What did I say wrong?" Twix had a bewildered look on his face.
"He has not thought of a name yet for the team. It's a sore spot for him." Kit was still receiving daggers.
"Ah! Got it." Twix nodded in understanding.
Kit sent Twix a friend request. Then added him to the party. They were now a party of three. Kit was happy with his choice to have another friend. He felt he was finally working on some of his issues by letting another person into his world. Now he had to work on his game character.
"Now that's sorted. Twix where the hell is the village? I don't see a single house in sight."
Twix blushed at Kit's words.
"Ahh that. Well Spartan Fire is quite small, so you won't see a house until we get a little closer. We still have another hour to travel before we reach a house."
