Kapitel 84: Chapter 83: The Drawbacks Of Small Town Gossip

Forest Lake High School, Temperance, South Dakota...

Layla Quinn had seemingly been aloof when making her way down the vast halls of her high school with high anticipation of what would become of her and Brick's relationship when he got back and what her father would have to say about it. Her stomach had been in knots over the outcome of them possibly clashing, with them being the two most important men in her life at the moment. The man who raised her and the man who had made her a woman, at least in her own mind. Layla had been so caught up in the whirlwind of emotions about her life that she had not taken the time to notice her friends had gathered and were all staring at her. She looked back at them with an arched brow and rolled her eyes at the aspect of knowing behind their eyes.

It was clear that Derrick had been quite chatty as of late and couldn't hold water about her relationship with Brick following his untimely interruption of their act back at her house. He had the widest smile of all of course, and Amy was as insufferable as always.

"So I heard you finally got some," she said with a sly grin.

"Shhh," said Layla her cheeks once more bright red as she glared murderously at Derrick who had been still smiling. "You trying to alert the whole school, and my dad at the same time?"

"Sorry," said Amy recalling just how strict and angry Jarrett Quinn could be.

"So I have a boyfriend, big deal," said Layla trying to casually downplay what her friends had heard about her and the mysterious biker Brick Kenneally.

"Leave her alone guys, she's definitely a woman now," added Casey with a grin. "She doesn't have time to play games with us children."

Layla rolled her eyes once more.

"You guys are assholes," she remarked before her friends burst out in laughter and followed her toward their next class.

It was something of a regular kind of day as per usual in Temperance, South Dakota aside from the fact that Layla Quinn had no longer been a child and very much a lovely lively young woman.

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

The Cafeteria, Forest Lake High School, Temperance, South Dakota...

Another long and boring school day had not been enough to keep Layla Quinn's mind off her current predicament with her father and her worries about her boyfriend and what he'd been bound to uncover during the odd case he'd been assigned for the missing little girl. Everyone had been talking about the case ever since The Howler M.C. took over and it seemed to have been spreading across the school as well. It wasn't as if anything could have remained a secret for very long given the nature of rumors and gossip, Temperance, South Dakota, had been a small town after all and word traveled rather quickly.

"Word is your big bad biker boyfriend is searching for a missing little girl," said Derrick as he sat down scooting his tray in front of him as Amy, Casey, and Lalya joined him at their usual table during lunch.

"I heard her name was Sara Downes and she went missing after a carnival trip with her parents back in the year 2000," added Amy casually as she meticulously spooned her green jello.

"Her parents were killed is what I heard," said Casey with a sad expression. "Poor girl never had a chance after that it seemed."

"Where did you hear all this?" asked Layla with an arched brow.

"Word's been spreading ever since old man Mack got shot," said Amy looking up from her jello and glaring at Layla as if she'd been living under a rock. "Don't tell me you've been too busy playing house with Big bad biker man to notice?"

Layla's cheeks turned red for a moment before she looked down at her grilled cheese sandwich. She had known Brick had been out looking for the bastard responsible for the little girl's kidnapping, but she'd been rather nervous about anyone finding out that her mother of all people had been possibly connected to it.

The last thing she wanted was for people to start staring her up and down because her no-good mother went out and did something stupid with some random shady bastard that she left her and her Daddy for. It was hard enough living life with everyone knowing that her mother walked out on them and was stupid enough to run off and get herself killed in the process. From what she recalled of Brick clueing her in on what was happening with his case, her mother had been around the child, using the little girl to get money from strangers with a sympathy case.

As if the prospect of her own mother having anything to do with the kidnapping of the missing little girl alone wasn't enough to make Layla sick to her stomach. In retrospect, she had been beating herself up for years about the prospect of not being a good enough daughter and how it might have possibly led to her mother taking off on them, but all this new evidence seemed to point to her mother being the vile one and screwing over her husband and daughter in the pursuit of a murderous kidnapper.

Layla couldn't believe she'd been related to such a cold and inhuman monster, the very aspect made it even harder for her to deal with. It was good riddance as far as she was concerned that the woman met her untimely end. Still, this had only proved to make her all the more inquisitive about her mother's state of mind and why she'd stoop so low as to help a lowlife criminal when it was the child that had been in need.

For the most part, Layla Quinn had not known what to make of the obviously detrimental choices her parents had made throughout the course of their lives, all she had known was that she had in no way wished to have been as foolish and cowardly as they had been. She had hoped that Brick and his crew could get the answers everyone else had seemed to have given up on finding and that he'd been safe given the situation before with his being shot while trying to find the truth about what happened to the little girl known as Sara Downes.
