Edith scanned the garden and open fields. There was no sign of Eleazar or the ghost army anywhere. She felt Caden’s hand on her shoulder.
“Hey,” he said softly. “I think your Sanctus Lux set them free.”
She stared into Caden’s turbulent eyes.
“What do you mean?” Edith asked, knowing the answer but not wanting to believe it.
“They are gone…” James said gently. “They are at rest.”
Caden nodded, a wistful smile on his lips, “You gave them peace.”
Edith frowned, tears choking her.
“How do you know that,” she cried. “How do you know they are at peace?”
Caden closed his eyes.
“I do not hear them. I don’t hear their moans, their rustling in the trees. I don’t feel their despair. They are free.”
He took her face in his hands and wiped away her tears.
“I never got to say goodbye…” Edith sniffed. “...I never get to say goodbye.”
“Never doubt their thanks,” Caden kissed her head and paused.
There was movement behind them.
