Serena parted her lips, asking for a breath, but instead, Lucian's tongue slipped in and swirled around her mouth, exploring her. He released her hair, instead placing his hand on her neck, pulling her ever closer to him. She slid her arms up and hood around his neck, stretching her body to reach.
He hoisted her up and let her back fall against the wall. Serena grunted and bit down slightly on Lucian's lip as her back fell against the wall. He pulled away and pressed his fingers to his lip.
Serena gave him an apologetic look and shrugged. He rolled his eyes and dove back in. His lips pressed harder against hers, and their kiss deepened. Their tongues swirled and met, and their saliva mingled in their mouths. Their breathing became one.
He nipped at her lip in retaliation from earlier, but she smiled, unaffected by the tease.
A sudden snap from the fireplace beside them shook them from their mindless tease. Serena slid down the wall, and Lucian leaned back to get a look at the fire.
The fire was mostly embers now, casting their orange glares at the room.
Lucian stepped back and tossed a few dry logs into the fire. They whooshed and burned, and immediately the fire was brought back from the brink of death.
Serena pressed her fingers to her swollen lips, her breathing raspy and uneven. Her breath had been sucked out of her by the stranger from a few months ago. But now, the werewolf she could call a friend.
Lucian crouched, holding a log in front of the hearth, ready to throw it in. Serena knelt beside him and pressed her thin fingers against his forearm. His muscles tightened against her touch. She looked up from his veiny arms to his pink face. His lips were swollen too and parted slightly, ready for more at a moment's notice. She smiled sheepishly and turned toward the growing fire.
"Thank you for sharing." She said quietly.
He nodded and studied her profile, memorizing the curves of her nose and cheekbones.
"You're welcome." His voice was husky and out of breath. "You'll have to tell me about your history with Atlas sometime." He gently elbowed her. She smiled at him and rose.
"Maybe soon." She waved at him as she left the living room and slowly walked toward her bedroom.
Serena closed the door softly and slid down the back of it to the floor. Her fingers tugged and played with her lip as she sat there in a daze.
The clock on the nightstand ticked the minutes by as she tugged at her lower lip. The puffiness deflated, and they returned to their normal pink by the time a knock came from the other side of her door.
She jumped up and swung the door open wide.
Lucian stood there, arm raised to knock again, wide-eyed. He had changed into his pajamas and had taken a shower. His hair was still in the messy slicked back style it always was. Serena leaned against the door, tightening her grip on its frame.
His eyes skimmed over her.
"Why aren't you in your pajamas? It's one o'clock?" He pointed a finger at her and circled around her body.
Her eyes widened, and she looked over her body. She was still in the crumpled pants and long sleeve from that morning.
"You're right." She looked up at him and smiled, scratching the back of her head as she did so. "I better change. It's been a long day."
She turned and flung the door closed.
It didn't slam, instead, it creaked and open after bouncing off Lucian's barefoot.
"Ow." He groaned, rubbing his foot. He hopped into Serena's room and flopped on her bed, ruffling her blankets in his fall. "Are you kicking me out?"
"Yes." She rolled her eyes and sifted through the tall dresser. She pulled out some shorts and a tank top and waved them in the air. "I am trying to change."
"Then change." Lucian leaned back and crossed his arms.
Serena's face flooded red, and her throat tightened.
"No!" She shouted, pointing at the door. "Leave."
"Fine, fine." Lucian held up his arms in surrender. He meandered out of the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him. "It was worth a shot." He mumbled from the other side of the door.
Serena changed and flung the door wide. Lucian, who had been leaning on the door, fell onto her as she did so. The two crashed to the floor, Lucian's forehead nailed the floor hard, his hand cradling Serena's.
Serena scrambled out from under Lucian and dashed to the kitchen. She filled a towel with ice and pressed it against Lucian's forehead. He grumbled at the sudden cold against his skin, but that grumble soon turned to a sigh of relief. He pressed his hand over hers, intertwining their fingers. Serena flushed as her skin burned at his touch.
"This isn't how I wanted tonight to go..." Lucian grumbled from underneath the towel.
"Oh?" Serena teased.
Lucian was silent for a moment, contemplating his next move. He dropped his hand, moving the towel and Serena's hand to his lap, and sighed. His eyes were pitiful.
"Yeah. This isn't what I wanted. By all meaning, you shouldn't be here. And I shouldn't either. I should be with my pack, leading them, and you should be at my side with them."
Serena scooted away from him slightly, her face puzzled.
"What do you mean?"
"If I had it my way, we wouldn't be hiding. We would be leading the Riverwood Pack together. But the moon goddess doesn't find favor in me. Atlas. That's who she favors." His voice was bitter. He clenched his jaw and tightened his grip on Serena's hand.
She winced under the increasing pressure and tried to pull away. But Lucian held fast.
"Haven't you noticed?" Lucian begged.
"Noticed what?"
"Noticed all the things I have done for you?"
"What are you talking about?" Serena cocked her head.
"I provide for you. I hold your hair back when you get wasted on the couch and need to throw up in the toilet. I move things and help you around the house. I even shower!" He pulled at this wet hair. "I never had to shower when I was a rogue. I lived and breathed dirt and blood. But I am trying to change. Trying to be there for you so that you'll notice me." He turned his gaze from hers and retracted his hands into his lap. "That kiss from earlier..."
Serena pressed a hand over her face and internally groaned as her lips burned at the mention of their kiss.
"It gave me hope." He continued, his voice taut.
Serena slid next to him and cradled his head against her chest. His ear pressed against her fluttering heart, and the two sat still for a moment.
"Give me time." She croaked.
Lucian lifted his head. It was inches from hers.
"I will give you all the time I have to offer."
