35% Dungeons & Devas / Chapter 7: The Chosen One

Kapitel 7: The Chosen One

The sudden ambush killed two A-Rank Raiders: a warrior and a black mage. It was really surprising for the elite team to be ambushed. Unseen enemies were difficult to deal with and caused heavy casualties. Inexperienced raid teams were often reported to suffer defeat from low rank monsters which were camouflaged or hidden.

The attackers were Scorpiomen. They had the body and a head of a human, but their lower parts were that of a scorpion. Their hands were holding scimitars, adding up to their lethality.

"Watch out, they're level 95."

"It's only the beginning and the enemies are already level 95."

"Leader, the enemies are stronger than the previous ones."

The raiders were in disbelief with the situation.

"I know. Be careful everyone. Fight in pairs or teams. Healers, move to the rear. Let's go."

Parvesh, holding two long daggers, joined the fray with the other two.

"Def Boost"

"Dispel"

"Healing Light"

"Light Barrier"

The White Mages continuously supported and healed the other raiders.

"Move back."

"Lava Pool."

A Black Mage used a domain-type spell, changing the terrain into a lava pool and roasting the enemies on it.

Parvesh moved swiftly and sliced enemies along his way. With the executives joining the battle, it became much easier. At the end of the battle, there were no other fallen raiders other than the two.

"We've survived. Stay on alert everyone."

They moved further into the desert for about thirty minutes but they couldn't find any signs of enemies on their way. They continued and saw a verdant giant tree in the distance. It was so huge that thirty adult men were barely enough to hug the tree. The height was approximately more than 120 meters. A verdant tree in the middle of a desert surely attracted anyone to come and take shelter. The shape and size signified that this tree had been there since ancient times. Its roots were hanging from its branches, reaching the ground and penetrating it. The main roots were poking from the ground here and there, reaching a radius of more than a kilometer. The scenery of an ancient giant tree in a desert caused the raid team to be more cautious. It was so silent and only a desert wind could be heard.

The raiders came near the tree, intending to take a rest if there were no threats.

"Shriieekk…ekekekek… uroourr…kkrrrr…."

At that very moment, all of the raiders looked up at the top of the tree and there were so many vultures. The vultures began to fly one after another and moved in a circle. This phenomena would be spooky for regular raiders. However, Garuda Mystic Elite Raiders were all seasoned raiders and they didn't panic at the view.

"On alert, everyone."

Vultures only meant death. They were often found in battlefields after and devoured the remnants.

Crackle.. Crackle… swishh.. Crackle…

The roots were moving and popping from the ground. The hanging roots also started to move. They were attacking the raiders, strangling anyone they could catch.

"Cut the roots. Tanks take the aggro. Ranged raiders move away beyond their reach. Support from a distance."

The raiders were in sync and soon they coordinated their formation.

"Uwaaa…."

A Warrior was caught from behind.

"Black Mage, use Fireball."

As the fire attack hit the root holding the Warrior, the root let go of him.

"Thanks. I owe you."

"Vijay, burn that tree," Parvesh gave an order.

"Roger."

Vijay exchanged his Grimoire with another one. The new grimoire was blazing red.

"Everyone stay away from that tree."

"Agni's Wrath"

Burning meteors fell down from the sky and pummeled the giant tree. However, the expected result didn't happen. The tree was still there. The fire was burning its outer part, but it didn't have any effect.

"Its level is unknown. Leader.."

"It's probably above S-Rank." Parvesh was also in disbelief. He didn't want to risk the raiders.

"Move further from the tree."

"Healer, take care of the wounded."

The White Mages, including Pooja and Lakshmi, who were part of the executives, used their best spells to cure the wounded raiders.

"Vijay.."

"Yes, Leader?"

"Lead the others back. I will go alone."

"No.. I can't… I won't do that. It's either we continue together or go back together. No one's left behind. That's our motto."

"Thanks, Vijay. But, you see that tree. Its level doesn't show. It can't be an S-Rank. It's beyond that. And it's not even the Boss."

"Exactly. That's why we must go back together."

"No, we need information. I'll just scout and take a look at the Boss. I'll be back soon."

"That's a promise."

The team rested for about twenty minutes. The look of the Ancient Banyan was still intimidating.

"Ok, everyone. Prepare to go back. It's too dangerous to continue."

The raiders started to move, but one man was standing still facing the ancient tree.

"Brother, let's go back." Lakshmi talked to her brother.

"You go first. I'll catch up later."

"No, we must go together."

"It's okay, Lakshmi. Trust the Leader."

"...."

Lakshmi joined the team with a heavy heart, despite knowing the responsibility of a guild leader.

When the raid team couldn't be seen anymore, Parvesh partially transformed into a mythical bird. His head became that of a hawk type bird with a strong curved beak. His eyes were so sharp and huge wings emerged on his back. His hands were still human but he had sharp claws on each finger. He flapped those wings and soared to the sky. He hovered for a while and observed the surroundings. In the distance, he saw a tiny building. Normal raiders, not to mention normal humans, would be able to perceive that miniscule spot. In his partial transformation form, Parvesh gained a boost to his stats, including his perception and senses. With his enhanced sight with a predator's eyes he could see so far away. In his point of view, he could also spot enemies and thus he could choose the best path to take. His objective was to scout the area and determine the danger level after all. So, he headed to the building.

"Is there anything you want to know about dungeons?" Bimo gave Janu time for Q&A.

"Well, there are a lot of things I don't know. Mmmm.. How long does it take for a dungeon to rise in ranks?" There was a lot Janu wanted to know, but he wasn't sure where to start. His father's whereabouts or his locked class and skills were out of question.

"It depends. It differs from each rank. For an E-Rank dungeon, it takes about one week before it rises to D. For D-Rank it's about two weeks. A month for C and B-Rank, three months for A-Rank."

"How about S-Rank dungeons?"

"Well.. No one knows. It's believed that S-Rank is the limit. S-Rank raiders can't take care of S-Rank dungeons alone. It's often joint raids. We can't imagine how terrible they'll become if they aren't taken care of in time."

"I see. Dungeons are elementals, right?"

"Basically. But, it's not absolute, meaning that you can find monsters of other elements or different environments, for example, in a fire dungeon. At least, the sign at the entrance gives a clue about the Boss' affinity."

"Then, how about raiders? How are they divided into ranks?"

"Basically, it's based on the level. Level 1 to 20 is E, 21 to 40 is D, 41 to 60 is C, 61 to 80 is B, 81 to 100 is A. In order to rise to S-Rank, a raider must have a breakthrough so he can reach above level 100. It's not an easy feat. Only a handful can do that and it is not achieved by gaining experience. You need a top tier skill, and Deva's Blessing."

'So, it means I'm B-Rank.'

"Is there any raider who hasn't reached level 100 but already receives a blessing?"

"Officially? No. There are actually some raiders, but it's kept as a secret. They're still lacking in strength compared to actual S-Rank."

"I see. Please tell me more about Devas."

"Hmmm… It's still a mystery. We know almost nothing about them. They do give blessings, and so far only a small number of S-Ranks have them. The blessings are only obtained in S-Rank dungeons. Randomly. You need a great deal of luck to have them."

Janu nodded to express his understanding.

"About my awakening.. Is there any case similar to mine? Were there any raiders who underwent awakening not through normal means?

"There's no record about that. We don't even know where your father got that stone. Do you still have it?"

"Sure."

Janu took off his necklace and handed it to Bimo. It was still the same as then. Bimo took a look at the stone and placed it against the light from the lamp.

Upon realizing something, he went to the window and used the sunlight to get a better view of something inside the stone.

His eyes were wide open. This made the remaining two wonder.

"Diana." Bimo called her and threw the necklace to her.

Diana caught it and activated Omnivision.

"Omnivision."

On the outside Diana was standing still with a blank stare. However, inside she was taken to an unknown world.

"Where am I?" She asked none other than herself.

She found out that she was inside a building, facing an altar. There were three statues behind it. Those statues were so grand and holy, which gave her a sense of transcendence.

'Is it a temple?'

"The one who is favored by Asvin, it's not your place. Go back to where you're from."

A gentle yet full of authority voice talked to her.

"I sincerely apologize for my error and rudeness. A friend of mine…." Before she could finish, the voice spoke again.

"Nothing to worry about. Everything has its own time. Time will reveal."

"O Mighty One, pardon for my rudeness. I beseech your favor to let this lowly one bestow another blessing to this apostle of mine. She has come here and it will prove beneficial for our cause." Another voice spoke.

"Very well. It seems that you really favor this one."

"Indeed. I sincerely express my gratitude."

"Now little one. Close your eyes."

As Diana closed her eyes, she felt a sacredness entered her body and touched her soul.

[Sacred Constitution

"I express my gratitude, O Lord."

"You should express your gratitude to the Mighty One. Remember, use it carefully. For the time being, you can only use it once a day."

"I'll surely remember your words."

"Now, go back and help The Chosen One."

"The Chosen One?"

"You know who. You mustn't say anything about it. The time hasn't come. Make sure that others who received Deva's Blessing to guide and aid the Chosen One."

Diana realized what brought her to that realm so she knew who was meant with The Chosen One.

"I will follow your instructions."

Diana came back to her senses and found the others were staring at her, waiting for an explanation.

"What?" She asked. She knew they wanted to know about what happened real bad. But, she had to keep everything a secret. Well, not everything. She could give a clue as an assurance.

"Don't 'what' us. What happened?" Bimo wanted to know.

"Everything will be revealed when the time comes," That's the only thing she could say.

"Okay. So what should we do?" Bimo couldn't believe that he would hear another riddle.

"You must get stronger. You can't use your skills, but it doesn't mean that you can't do anything. You still have your stats, right?" Diana seemed to have something on her mind.

"That's right." Janu confirmed.

"Why don't you train him, Mr. President?" Diana proposed to Bimo to teach Janu before he went to the GMA.

"Me? Why? He'll go to Garuda Mystic Academy," Bimo protested.

"Jacklyn will be in the capital for quite some time, you see. Janu will have plenty of time before he goes together with her. Four months at least. Or, do you not want to?"

"He's like my own son, you know. I just can't help imagining him and Jacklyn having a training session. Alright, I'll train you. But, first let's go to the tenth floor again."

"I'll stay here," Diana felt like she needed some time on her own.

On the tenth floor, Bimo and Janu entered a different room from the previous one. Inside was like an arena. In the middle was a pit, which was used for sparring. The arena had a transparent barrier which was activated when there were matches. Seats were lined up surrounding the pit. Examiners were supposed to sit there. Considering the number of seats, spectators might be allowed to watch some entertaining matches that were probably held regularly.

In the arena, two raiders were having a match. A Black Mage was fighting another Black Mage.

The one who was holding a Red Grimoire was a male while the other, who had a Golden Grimoire, was a female. Looking at the scene, the fight had happened for a while.

"Fire Golem"

A portal on the ground in front of the one holding the Red Grimoire and from there a Fire Golem emerged. The golem had a solid rock constitution enveloped with fire. Its size was only equal to about two adults. It was one of the advantages of golem type summon. Its size was adjustable, different from many organic type summons, which had fixed sizes.

"Oorrraaaaa…."

The Fire Golem roared and charged at its opponent. It was ready to pummel with its flaming right hand. The opponent, however, was not an easy target. He jumped backward and activated a skill.

"Light Chain."

Four golden chains emerged from the ground in the four directions and caught the golem's hands and feet. The golem was unable to move from this lock. It struggled, trying to break free from the binds but to no avail. Its strength couldn't overpower the chains.

The summoner didn't expect much from the situation and he conjured another spell.

"Fire Javelin."

Five air distortions formed above the conjurer and fire javelins flew from inside towards the opponent. The javelins were like fiery huge needles, ready at any time to melt anything they touched.

"Grand Dome."

The female Black Mage took measures seeing the incoming missiles. She activated a defensive spell in the form of a light barrier surrounding her. The barrier could protect her from all directions and when the fire javelins hit it a loud boom could be heard.

"Hmmph,' The male mage expected as much that his spell could be nullified by the barrier. It was widely known among the raiders that Grand Dome was an A-Rank spell and only a few attacks could penetrate it.

'She lives up to her reputation. To be able to keep my golem chained and cast a protective spell is quite a rare feat.'

The golem disappeared after some time. It seemed that it had reached its limit. The male Black Mage exchanged his grimoire with another one. It was Blue and it was of a higher grade than the previous one.

"Southern Sea."

The arena floor became a pool of water. The opponent was able to float on the water, though. Below her soles was glimmering light.

"Aqua Serpent"

A snake made of water emerged from the water. Its size was equal to that of a palm tree's. It moved quickly in a circular motion and tried to coil the opponent. Its effort wasn't truly successful because of the protection. The snake then tried to swallow her from above.

Drrr…..

The barrier trembled but the snake wasn't able to break through. It tried again but it was futile. The female Black Mage then countered with an offensive spell.

"Photon Bullet."

A light bullet flew and hit the snake's head.

Ttssss…

The snake disappeared in an instant.

"Okay, that's enough. We can stop now," The female Black Mage ended the spar.

"But, I still have something up my sleeve," The other didn't want to stop yet.

"I know. But, seeing from your attacks you're not even at the peak of B-Rank. For now, you can't use spells above B-Rank. Raise your level and break through to A-Rank."

"Very well. Thank you for your guidance, Miss Santi."

"My pleasure."

After the spar ended she walked to the spectators.

"Mr. President. What brings you here?"

The Black Mage, whose name was Santi, asked Bimo who was sitting together with Janu on the spectator seats.

"Where is Andre?"

"He's supposed to train the cadets."

"Tell him to come here tomorrow at ten. Let this guy have a spar with him."

"Okay," Santi accepted the order while observing the other man with curious eyes.

"You can take a rest for now, Janu. Or you can take a tour. Go to Katheryne. She'll arrange your accommodation here. Just tell her if you need a guide."

"Okay, Uncle."

'Uncle?' Santi was surprised.

"Oh, one more thing. Make sure you say hello to Ellyas and Anton."

"I'll make sure to remember. Thank you."

On the ground floor.

"Excuse me, Miss Katheryne."

"Oh, hi there. So how's the meeting with the president?"

"It's good."

"That's great. Now how can I help you?"

"About the accommodation?"

"Right. This is where we are now. Your room is on the top floor in this building right here. The cadets are also staying here. Here's your card. Room 30-A1. If you want to have a meal, there are a restaurant and a cafe on the ground floor. Just show this card to the waiter." The receptionist explained and showed him his room's location using the big screen beside her. The map of the UR headquarters was shown there.

"Thanks. How about the equipment shop?"

"The Plaza is on this side. And beside it is the Workshop." She showed a location not too far from the building where Janu would stay.

"That's great. Thank you, very much Miss Katheryne."

"You're welcome. And please just call me Katheryne. By the way, if you happen to go to the Workshop you can see Mr. Joyo. He's in charge of it. I'll let him know about you." Katheryne seemed to know Janu's intention when he asked about the shop.

"Much appreciated."

Janu directly went to his living quarters. He went to the caffe first to have coffee and something to eat. When he arrived he showed his card to the waiter and looked for an empty seat. It was quite crowded with the cadets from the branches.

"Hey, over here." A male voice called him. A young man was waving his hand at him so that he could notice him. Janu walked towards him, who was sitting alone.

"Nohan. You're here."

"Take a seat. Where were you?"

"I met my uncle and I was told to come here."

"Your uncle is in the UR main headquarters?"

"Yes, and I will be staying here for the time being."

"That's great. My room is on the second floor. How about you?"

"It's 30."

"The top floor?" Nohan was surprised by that. The cadets were told not to go past the twentieth floor, but Janu was staying at the top.

"It seems. You don't have a training session?" Janu remembered that the man named Andre was training the cadets at that moment.

"No. Some cadets from Andalas and Borneo are training now. We will have a session later in the evening. You didn't come here for training?"

"I intended to. I asked my uncle about the URA but his friend suggested that I go to Garuda Mystic Academy."

"That's too bad," It's common knowledge that the URA was the best. The top five guilds had their own academy and they were also famous for their reputation. They were comparable to the URA, but not as generous. The competition was also fiercer. It was understandable that Nohan, or anyone else, mistook that.

"Are you ready to order?" The waiter who came to their table asked.

"Mmm..."

"Memory Coffee is famous for its Milk Coffee with Brown Sugar," Nohan suggested on the signature menu. It was indeed popular nationwide.

"Okay, that one. And a toast, please."

"Okay, please wait."

"Have you ever been to the Plaza?" Janu thought that Nohan had been there and he wanted to make sure.

"Yes, of course. The Plaza offered many great items. You can find almost anything in the UR Plaza. Their prices are expensive, though. It's almost impossible for me to buy something without savings. Wanna go there together? I still have some time before my session."

"Sure. Let's finish our snacks first."
