Kapitel 227: Schiltach [5]

[3rd person Pov]

A certain meeting was currently taking place in the largest tent of the camp, with two individuals trying to make the other understand.

"Stop! You know as well as I do that you can't go out there! The church won't let it go if something happens to you. I'm just as frustrated as you, but forcing things won't help us!"

"So what should we do then, captain? Your comrades are dying out there, fighting for their lives every day and we aren't supposed to help them? I might just be one person, but that's at least one person more than if I didn't go."

Aksel couldn't sit still anymore, knowing what was going on in the field. Healing the wounded soldiers every day had made his patience run dry, now unable to tolerate the situation no matter how complicated the politics behind it was.

Although Captain Lavigne shared his frustration, he knew that it wouldn't end well. His many years of experience had already taught him this. The dogs below shouldn't run wild unless they wanted their leash to tighten even more. And bringing in external power without authorization would absolutely be deemed as running wild.

Even more so when considering Aksel's standing.

Aksel the Admirable, one of the loyal priests of the church who was always helping people around the country. No matter how small or big an incident, he would always be there, healing people in need.

A great healer, and even though he met his limit at [B]-rank, he was still one of the most skillful healers in the nation. And on top of that...

"Also, do you really think I will die? Since when was I that weak?"

Yes, Aksel wasn't just a great healer, he was also quite adept at fighting as well. So far he had survived many battles, with not just one or two being incredibly dire. So, even though he was far from the strongest, he truly wasn't a weakling. At least he wasn't weak enough for the captain to worry about him.

Or so it should have been if this was a normal situation. Alas, it was far from it.

"Aksel, I am well aware that you aren't inexperienced in the field. However... There have already been sightings of [A]-rank monsters out there..."

Taking a quick sip of the coffee in front of him, Aksel didn't look all too surprised by the burly man's words, almost as if he had already expected things to be way worse than what the nation wanted to let on.

"I see. But I will still go out there. Healing is a lot more efficient if applied as soon as possible, and if the monsters are that much stronger than we thought, it's even more important for me to be there. Adding to that, there is now a student with the healing attribute that can stay at the camp while I'm gone."

The captain could see in his eyes that no matter what was said there, it wouldn't matter. Aksel had already made up his mind, and if that was the case, there was no way for him to stop him.

"Haaa... Fine... At least make sure to..."

*BOOOM!*

*BEEEEEEEPPPP!*

A huge explosion rang out, quickly followed by the sound of the alarm, signaling that something was coming. It barely took a second for the two men to rise from their seats, giving each other a slight nod before venturing out of the tent.

Rushing to the edge of the camp, they were quickly met by a sight that they wished they wouldn't have to see.

In the distance, they could now see troops of the border defense struggling against a horde of monsters, with everything ranging from simple goblins to electric wolves, and huge ogres.

Luckily, the troops seemed more than capable of putting up a good fight against them, swinging their swords with efficiency while launching long-range magic attacks that further enhanced the brightness of the day.

Still, there was no question about the fact that this wouldn't last. With monsters gathering from all around the plains, Lavigne knew that things could quickly get out of hand if the rotation of his soldiers wasn't impeccable.

Thus, he augmented his voice with mana, making sure to be heard by every single individual around.

"I want every single troop leader who isn't on the field to gather in my tent in 2 minutes! If you are late by a single second, I will take it as treason!"

Following this, he put a hand on Aksel's shoulder, his earlier frustration now replaced by pure gratitude.

"Stay alive, Aksel."

Smiling gently, like the holy man he was, he responded in a bright tone.

"I always do, don't I?"

[Sophie's Pov]

"Students! Gather around!"

An emergency meeting was now taking place with the principal and the teachers in front of us. The reason? Most likely it was the fact that a horde of monsters had fully broken through to the last defensive line, now being close enough that we could literally see the battle taking place.

With his white hair gently moving with the harsh wind, the old man didn't carry an especially happy face.

"Students of Ainu, as you can see, our worst fears seem to have been realized. Though I understand that this might be frightening to you, I want you to know that you aren't in any danger. If the monsters break through the last defensive line, I and your teachers are permitted to step in. So do not worry."

'...what?'

"We will not allow any danger to come to our nation, so you do not have to worry about your friends and family as, if danger comes to shove, we will immediately step in and quench their advances. However, this means that your participation will increase even more. From rations to helping..."

As the principal kept speaking, my vision started to redden, unable to comprehend how utterly insane this situation was. Unnoticed by me, blood had already started flowing from my hands that had gotten pierced after clenching them too hard.

Looking around, I could see that most students seemed quite relaxed when listening to his words. Most of them only appeared to feel like it was a hassle that our workload was going to increase.

'Am I the crazy one?! Doesn't anyone else see how fucked up this situation is?!'

We could literally turn our heads and see the troops fighting, see the redness of blood that quickly soaked the ground. And here the principal was, telling us that they could stop it any time they wanted?!

"What the fuck...!"

"Sophie, don't."

A hand landed on my shoulder, making me quickly restrain myself from shouting. Turning my head, I was met by a very sad smile, a smile that told me he felt the same way as I did. Yet, Arthur didn't scream. Instead, he forced himself to keep silent, most likely knowing that there was nothing to be gained.

"But they...!"

"I know. And unfortunately, it doesn't matter. Even if you raise your voice here, nothing will change. That's not how the world works. Because we... are not strong enough."

"... that's all for now. Please make sure not to step outside of the camp anymore as we will not be able to go out to save you if something happens."

And with that, it didn't take long for most of the teachers and students to be on their way, just going about their day as if nothing much happened.

As Anna, Sarah, and Bellatrix came over to me and Arthur, I was even more furious to see that even they didn't seem to care all that much, with the exception of Sarah being a bit pale. And she was the fucking princess of this nation!

Fully aware that if I stayed in this situation I would inevitably blow up, I turned my back to them and walked away, blood slowly painting the dry dirt beneath me, dripping from my hands. Not minding the pain, I just kept walking.

"Sophie? Where are you going?"

Somehow, I felt like I had gained another level of understanding of the man named James.

This world was harsh, cruel... insane. So was it truly that weird for him to want to crush the unspoken rules around him? At this point, I almost felt like I wanted to do the same. To just walk away from the absurdity around me, to just walk my own path without caring about anyone else.

'You must be patient, young one... In time, you will be able to pave your own way...'

Suddenly, a voice could be heard in my head, a voice that I had heard so many times before but could understand. The one who recently had guided me to where James was doing something to Arthur, the one who helped me to survive on Tella.

'I know... I already know that!'

The dragon inside of me.
