ADELE’S POV

Joshua poured me a glass of wine from an open bottle on the table and handed the glass to me. There was a watery-eyed, proud look in his eyes, and he smiled widely.

I timidly held up my hand and said, “I’m good on the wine, but thank you.”

“Nonsense!” Joshua belted out, his voice ringing throughout the kitchen. “This is a celebration, my dear!”

My cheeks went red and hot. I didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that I wasn’t drinking, and I didn’t want anybody to think that I was...

“What’s the matter?” Joshua boomed, setting a hand on my shoulder. “It’s not like you’re pregnant!”

That was right. Joshua and Jasper were expecting me to be unable to give birth, all because of my father’s and Diana’s lies.

The air grew heavy, and I loudly gulped.

Jasper rose from his seat and his chair screeched on the kitchen floor.

“Father,” he said sternly.

My heart beat faster for Jasper’s protectiveness, and I watched the way his fingers curled into fists.
