Declan directed Faun to sit on the ground, placing a pillow down to cushion him.
Faun gulped but obeyed, wringing his hands in front of him.
Declan armed himself with a sturdy brush and the hair oil, staring down at Faun's unruly hair.
He might have bitten off more than he could chew.
He started with the hair oil to make the red gold tresses easier to untangle, he hoped.
Faun held his breath when Declan's hands touched his hair, a soft beguiling scent of some flower with hints of fruitiness swarming around him, making him take a deep breath.
Faun's hair was extremely soft for how wild it looked, which was a relief to Declan because it meant it would be easier to comb out.
He started from the bottom, holding out a section of his hair to start at the tip.
If a witch had told him that he would be combing out someone else's hair with such intense concentration, he would have called her brain dead yet, here he was.
Faun was quite cooperative too, making no complaints even as Declan steadily worked over his hair with the brush.
His shoulders had relaxed in relief, his hands stilling.
He knew what this was, he just hadn't done it in forever.
Of course he washed his hair whenever he could, there was just no time to properly look after his hair.
A vague memory of his mother brushing his hair floated through his mind, dissipating just as quickly as it came.
He couldn't remember his mother's face though, so instead he thought of Declan brushing out his hair for him.
It was very relaxing and it made him drowsy, his eyes closing to the world.
Declan didn't notice this yet, half sweating as he fought with Faun's hair.
Maybe he should convince the hybrid to cut his hair shorter? He thought about what Faun would look like with short hair and immediately scrapped the thought.
If Faun wanted to cut his hair though, he wouldn't try to dissuade him but he wasn't going to convince him or make him do it.
After a good long while of steady brushing, Declan was all done.
He looked proudly down at his work, smiling a little even though his arm ached.
Faun's hair was shining healthily, the locks straightened out… well as straightened out as loosely curly hair could be.
It was then he noticed that Faun's head had fallen forward, the hybrid not even noticing when Declan finished his brushing.
Declan glanced down to catch a glimpse of Faun's face and found the hybrid fast asleep, his face obscured by his fluffy, long hair.
At least he wasn't a screamer when his hair was being handled.
Declan straightened up again and looked down at Faun's hair, getting the strange urge to braid it.
That was ridiculous, he didn't even know how to make a braid.
He had to get Faun to bed though, before he broke his neck sleeping upright.
Declan stretched after he put Faun to bed, he couldn't believe he was already acting like a dad at the young age of 23.
He was about to turn around and leave with plans to put out the lights as he left when something caught his attention.
He stared in blatant shock at the sight in front of him, unable to tear his eyes away.
Was that a tail? And bigger ears?
Declan hadn't seen a hybrid yet before Faun and there wasn't exactly the opportunity presented to him to learn about them so he had no idea what they were capable of.
Because here was Faun, very much in his human form but yet…
He slept on his side, a big, bushy red tail sprouting out from under his shirt. It swept around a few times before curling itself around Faun's waist, settling down.
Under his freshly brushed hair, his ears had also grown out, big and sharp at the edges. It was also the same as his tail, furry and an eye-catching shade of red with hints of white in the fur.
It stood vertically at first and then slowly drooped at about the same time that Faun's tail settled.
Declan watched with wide eyes the entire time, shaking himself out of it only after a while.
The last thing he needed was Faun waking up from how hard he was staring, that wouldn't end well.
He had to cross his arms so he wouldn't give in to the temptation to touch, maybe it was because Faun was the first hybrid he had been in such close proximity with because he was usually very self controlled and composed.
But something about Faun made him extremely curious, he couldn't quite place his finger on it.
He finally tore himself away from the Fox hybrid sleeping peacefully on the bed in his guest room, putting off the light as he went out.
He had rescued a Fox hybrid, a red one too.
Declan made his way to the living room because sleeping was out of the question but there was no way he could get any work done either.
So he just put on the television for ambience, the show he put on playing softly in the background as he tried to sort out his thoughts.
It was something of a culture shock but he supposed that was the reason why they were hybrids, half human, half animal.
He couldn't help but think of Faun's ability to grow a tail and ears as cute. Could all hybrids do that as well?
Declan shook his head to get rid of his thoughts, Faun was still going to leave in the end.
It wasn't because the hybrid was comfortable that was why he slipped up but because it was the norm for him and hiding his tail and ears were taxing. That was the version Declan was going with.
Thinking about this brought him nothing but a pounding headache so it was best he pushed it out of his mind and tried to get some actual work done.
