Kapitel 22: Chapter 18 First Battle Part 1

Flanders already had some idea of what to expect, the kid had been a spirit master for a while after all, but he thought he would be somewhere around the 16th or 17th level. Not 24th.

Spirit Masters have a somewhat slow period of growth before reaching twelve years of age, where it speeds up until the beginning of twenties when it starts to slow down again, normalising at twenty five or six until the end of the middle age where it starts to slow again.

A soul power in the twenties at six means that when Chen Jin reaches twelve he should be above forty, Flender couldn't make a more precise extimation because the higher the innate soul power the higher the cultivation speed. The very thought seemed impossible, but the kid almost certainly had more than ten innate soul power.

Chen Jin was currently enjoying the myriad of emotions that were passing through Flenders face. It was quite fascinating, he didn't know they could change so fast, from shock to disbelief, to comprehension and shock and disbelief again, ultimately settling down in a weird mix of resigned acceptance, numbness, hope and excitement.

Chen Jin distractedly mused the last two were for the future.

Flenders coughed to control himself, got up and clapped his hands as he said "Alright, now that I know your level let's go outside, practical experience is extremely important for spirit masters, I suppose that at your age you have none but even then I'll arrange a spar to check your current level. Come"

Flenders was already walking outside as he finished, determined to ignore what just happened and pretend it was all as normal.

Chen Jin followed with a smile. Watching the fast change of expressions of his new Dean had been surprisingly fun, it was a pity he couldn't make a pass time out of getting people to react like that.

He could see a bright career ahead of him in teasing people though, it was surprisingly fun. Chen Jin just needed to practice before being able to enjoy the fruits of his labour. He had no idea how to actually do it for now, his social interactions currently being rather lacking.

While he was lost in his thoughts he'd followed Flender all the way back to the open space that was previously serving as a training ground.

Zhao Wuji had his back turned to them and the two teens were sprowled out on the ground spread eagled. They seemed dead to the world.

Flender clapped his hands to grab their attention.

"All right, I see your training has been going well today" he totally ignored their current state.

"This little monster here is Chen Jin, from today he is your junior. If I have no volunteers for a spar with him in five seconds both of you will be getting extra training today".

Both of them nearly instantly got up.

Tie Qiang spoke first "I can go, as a defensive spirit master I can allow our little junior brother to show his all that he got" he firmly nodded at the end with a serious face. Feng Shizi just nodded along.

Chen Jin was rather surprised, the speed at which they got up shouldn't have been possible in their current state. They'd either been pretending well or decided that current pains were nothing compared with what they would feel later.

The two adults just smiled like the cat that got the canary.

It seemed they were just slacking off after all.

Zhao Wuji half turned to them and asked with crossed arms "Isn't the kid a bit too young to join?"

Flender smiled, raised his glasses and spoke conspiratorily "Don't look down on the little monster he's 8 and a half and just a bit short for his age. Besides, full spirit power and a current spirit power of 24 is more than enough to join. Some people just get all the talent" he gave Chen Jin the stink eye at the end.

Chen Jin just smiled and shrugged, it wasn't his fault after all.

"With who am I sparing?" he simply asked. He was getting a bit antsy now, it was going to be his first spar, he could finally know where he rated compared to other spirit masters.

Flender looked thoughtfully from him to the two teens, they looked like they were in the army, ramrod straight.

"Since Tie Qiang decided to volunteer himself then you can spar with him" he finally said.

Chen Jin nearly laughed. He could hear a quiet "More like we were volunteered" and from the Dean's and Vice-Dean's face it seemed that theyd also heard.

It was Flenders who adressed that.

"Ohhh? You wouldn't have volunteered yourself if you hadn't been asked then?" he narrowed his eyes.

Feng Shizi took a step away from Tie Qiang while shaking his head as if to say that he had nothing to do with that, meanwhile Zhao Wuji just looked at him as if he were an idiot.

Chen Jin just looked on with interest. It seemed his next few years or at least months wouldn't be boring.

The Shield Master panicked and rapidly shook his hands "No No No No No, I didn't say anything!"

The mocking in Zhao Wuji's gaze became greater.

"Ohh? Then are you saying that I was imagining things?" Flender smiled as he said.

It looked as if Tie Qiang's soul had left his body.

Flender gave him a look but otherwise ignored him.

"Right, so before the two of you start.

Chen Jin, as you already know, Tie Qiang is a defensive level 39 Spirit Elder. His spirit is the Black Iron Shield.

Tie Qiang, Chen Jin is a level 24 Spirit Grandmaster, his spirit is his body.

This way both of you have the minimum information about your opponent, the objective of the spar is just to see Chen Jin's current level, so there will be no time limit.

Tie Qiang, do you need any time to recover your spirit power or physical strength?"

The Shield Bearer shook his head to say no, he'd seemingly recovered from his mild panic.

"Then the two of you can start when you're ready, we'll watch from the sidelines".

Chen Jin smiled and nodded at Tie Qiang before schooling his expression, to a similar response from his opponent.

There were no introductions in this fight, they had been made for them.

Chen Jin let his rings out, to show that he was starting, put his left foot in front of the right, and sprung forwards with a Wave Burst from his left, his body tilting sideways with his right arm extended and a Spirit Blade forming on his hand.

Tie Qiang was surprised by the sudden burst of speed, if the slight widening of his eyes was anything to go by, but his reaction wasn't slow, his spirit and rings quickly came out, his second flickering along with his shield that gained a slight sheen for a moment and practically dragged him two meters forwards, slightly to the side of where Chen Jin was passing before he tried to bash him with it.

Chen Jin used a simple one Wave Burst to increase his speed and dodge the strike, changing directions with Wave Burst was possible, he'd discovered, but the greater the change the greater the strain on his legs, so when possible he preferred to keep going.

When he stopped himself he turned around, Tie Qiang was still in the same place, shield held in front of him while waiting.

So he decided to do what seemed obvious, he walked over. It was a one on one and he saw no hurry, nobody said he needed to run in a fight after all.

He kept a calm face as he walked, the confusion in his opponent's face increasing with every step he took. It was rather confusing to see someone walk in the middle of a fight he supposed.

As Chen Jin approached he mused that it was rather great that he'd spared his legs before, the shield was a bit big and he didn't feel like smashing his hand against it, now that he thought about it it was best he test Spirit Blade against someone whose spirit wasn't defensive in nature first.

As such, the only way he saw of either winning or damaging his opponent was out maneuvering him, something that would be made harder by Tie Qiang's second skill being what looked like a rush skill that he'd already shown he had no problems using to dodge faster people.

When he got within five meters of the shield bearer he looked like he had come to a decision, he'd leaned a bit and his second ring lighted up once again. Unfortunately for him they'd come to a decision at the same time. Luck was also a part of a fight.

Chen Jin used a weaker Wave Burst to move sharply to the left with his right foot and another one, stronger, to change direction and move back with his left.

"Shield Dome" Tie Qiang's third spirit ring lit up and a semi transparent black light radiated from his shield and formed a dome all around him.

Once again Chen Jin was fastly approaching him slightly sideways. But this time his arm was only lightly extended, a bit relaxed, and he had a single finger pointing forwards.

"Point Burst" it was with a satisfying shattering sound that the dome burst.

Hello everyone!

I would love to get some opinions on the fight scene, it was the first that I wrote.

Thanks for reading!

PS. I know the chap says part 1 but the fight is nearly over, it as at most a hundred words or so to go, it just seemed like a nice point to end it at. As a reader I hate cliffhangers, as a writer they write themselves :-P
