'Why is it always so cloudy? I rarely ever see the sun. It's probably because of this creepy forest.' Looking through the playroom window, Lira reflected.
Her back was turned away from the other kids who were running around, playing, laughing, and screaming at one another about whose toy it was. A typical day in her life.
She was looking out over the forest, which seemed to go on forever and even out of her sight. Lira doesn't think she's ever seen the forest without snow, or the sky without being so cloudy that she can't see past it.
Lira always found these things strange, but as with everything else she found strange, she would have to investigate later. Lair can recall only one occasion when the sky was clear: the night of the comet.
Coincidence? Yes, most likely, but she'll just say it wasn't. Lira sighed and tapped the window. She's been trapped in this lab for a year and a half now.
A long time but she spent 90% of the time with her eyes closed so it felt a lot shorter of time. Lira didn't have a big birthday party or anything on her actual birthday. Marry had simply gitten a lovely cupcake for her.
It wasn't much, but it was appreciated by Lira. The food is good at the lab, but they don't get things like candy or sweats. Mostly healthy food with lots of protein.
It's considered a miracle if they get juice. The rules of the places gradually began to unravel as she grew older.
The majority of them were fairly straightforward: no staying out past curfew, no fighting, no arguing with adults, follow everything the adults say, and so on. Lira had long since figured out the rules.
Aside from the lack of information, Lira was making good progress. She had discovered nothing resembling a camera in her shared room after extensive investigation.
This was a godsend for her, and she practiced every type of magic she could from then on. It was only elemental magic, such as water, fire, earth, air, and lightning. Aether could also be used with darkness and light.
She'd learned to use air magic to create a bubble that muffled any sound from escaping from it, it was one way, so sound could enter the bubble.
She also used light magic to create a kind of camouflage. It may appear simple, but it took her quite some time to perfect.
She didn't have any help or anything; she did everything on her own. Throughout the night, she would retreat to a corner of the large room and cast the two spells.
They used a little Aether and a little more to keep them going, but she did it anyway. She would start small after everything was in place.
She attempted to make a small flame, but the flame was purple. Lira had given them the name Aether Flames because it was simple and easy to remember. To simply put it, was an amazing discovery.
The flames were intense, but they did not harm her. She had tried to burn herself, but unless she really wanted it to, it didn't work. She discovered that Aether has incredible regenerative abilities as a result of her stupidity.
Her wounds were able to heal in a matter of minutes without the use of much Aether, even faster with she used more Aether. Week by week, she realized that Aether's abilities were nearly limitless. It was a cheat code to life, and she wasn't going to share it.
With all of her successes, she also had some setbacks. Like the fact that she was terrible at fire, earth, and darkness magic. Fire, especially, it required more effort even though it should of been quite simple for someone like her. The stuff was her worst enemy.
She had an idea as to why, but she didn't want to think about it. Lira also didn't train physically; she wasn't the best in biology, but she knows that training a baby who is a little over three years old can lead to disaster.
She considered the possibility that Aether could heal anything that happens, but it was still too risky. She'd rather wait a few years to be sure.
Other than working, her relationship with Marry kept on getting better and better over the months As for the other kids, not so much. The children thought the girl was weird because of how quiet she was and that she doesn't talk to anyone.
Lira thought it was a dumb reason but didn't care, the kids will probably die soon. So she didn't want to build any relationships with them. Just like that, quite some time had passed by.
But good times don't last forever, or at least peaceful times.

Lira was in her corner doing her thing one day when she heard footsteps outside. The girl frowned and stopped what she was doing. Her spells dispersed, and she ran back to her crib using air magic to make her steps unnoticeable.
'Who is that, maybe Marry? No, it's far too early. I've been doing this for a long time, so I know I have a few hours before she arrives.'
The sun hadn't even risen above the harrison yet. Lira had no idea who it was, but she wasn't going to take any chances. She'd react the same way if it was Marry.
She'd never forgotten that the woman was still employed there and worked for the kingdom. Lira positioned herself so that she could see who entered the room, and to her surprise, it was Val.
She hadn't seen him in a long time, and she honestly didn't care. She didn't want to see him, but she doesn't always get her way.
She kept her eyes slightly open, observing his every move. Marry walked in immediately after Val, her head hanging low, followed by guards dress in blue uniforms.
'I see, it's begun, huh? I thought I would have a few more months, maybe even a year, but I guess I was wrong.'
In a matter of seconds, the room became brighter, causing some of the children to turn in place. Val raised his hands under the watchful eyes of Lira. Lira can't fight all of them at once, maybe not even one, but she can cause enough of a commotion to give herself a chance to flee.
Lira knows very little about the tower's defenses. All she knew was that it was enormous and had many floors. It was one of the many reasons she didn't leave the lab just yet.
Val's eyes darkened and he clapped, sending a bust of World Energy through the room, waking everyone up. The children shivered in place, and some began to cry.
Lira frowned at the display.
'Why are they doing this now? I'm the youngest and I'm only three years and four months old. All the others aren't four yet but still. I doubt they will make us train this early, maybe just force us to learn some rules and how to read and write.
God these people really don't know how a child behaves, or they just don't care.' Lira thought sitting up like all the other kids.
"Line up!" Val shouted, his voice was so loud that most of the kids had cover their eyes.
Lira eye twitched but she hopped out of her crib. 'Is he really about to do some military bullshit, who is in charge of all of this. It's probably him, if so then this kingdom needs new higher-ups.'
Lira was going to be very nitpicky and complain about every error she sees. She might as well, she needs to get some entertainment from the whole thing.
After a few minutes, all of the children were lined up according to age. So Lira was on one end of the line while the oldest was on the other. The children had looked to Marry for help but she stayed silent the entire time, not daring to met any of their gazes.
She just had to hope they would be strong, but she knew she wouldn't be seeing quite a few of them in the years to come.
Val circle the children over and over, eyeing them as if they were just numbers. He stopped in front of Lira and looked down at her, the girl in turn just stared up at him.
Her deep blue eyes never changed. Lira was prideful by nature and wouldn't cower away from the man. She would be able to surpass Val in strength in a few years, with all her advantages, it was only a matter of time.
Val hummed and walked to the middle of line. He stopped in front of a boy and crouched down. "What is your number?"
"E-Eh, my n-name is..."
"Name? You don't have a name, dear boy, none of you do. All of you are property of the kingdom, you are here to serve the crown. You are all just numbers, numbers and experiments that will probably die in the bloodline transfusion."
'Oh, I'm so scared. What will I even do. Can you tell it's bloody sarcasm.' Lira thought trying not to roll her eyes. She didn't want to get into trouble that early.

"Well isn't this just wonderful." Lira said looking around her new room. All of the children were guided to different rooms after Val's little speech. Every one of their rooms looked the exact time.
The walls were gray and so was the ceiling, the tiled floor was a dark sand colored. There was a twin sized bed in the corner on the room along with a desk and chair next to it.
A cupboard was on the opposite side of the room with dark purple colored uniforms, all of them Lira's size.
Although it wasn't ideal, she could work with it. What angered her was that there was no window. Not even a bared one. Lira can't get to the outside and now she can't even see it.
It was going to drive her crazy at some point. She groaned and sat on the ground, crossing her legs. Lira expended her arm and took a deep breath. Her eyes started to glow bright blue and purple lightning crackled on her hand.
She didn't have the chance to finish her test the morning so she would have to finish now. The first thing Lira did was make sure she wasn't being watched.
'Aether Lightning takes so much Aether that I wonder if it is worth it sometimes, but it's very strong so the cost matches the gain. And my pool for World Energy has been catching up to my Aether, soon it'll surpass it in a matter of time.'
Lira definitely used Aether more than World Energy, no doubt about it. She wouldn't be using World Energy much until she gains her ability that is. Even then she'll still use Aether more.
Lira heard the door and stopped, she waved her hand causing the lightning to stop. A guard walk in right after. Lira was tapped her hands on her lap humming a sound from Earth.
The guards most likely knew she was a quite child and didn't react to many things so she didn't need to act or anything.
"Get dressed, you will be taught the necessities. You will also be given the rules and what will happen while you are here."
