The air felt thicker as we approached Ametyst Reigholt. Rowan had warned me that the Land of Night would become more perilous the closer we got, so I knew to expect it, but it still overwhelmed me - even with the bus as a barrier to the worst of the Night’s effects.
I sat at the booth behind Rowan’s seat, too on-edge to dare being alone for any part in this - feeling how easily I could get lost and confused in my own thoughts if I so much as looked away from him.
No one sat behind me, across the table from me in the booth. I knew this, but I kept forgetting - I kept having the sensation that there was one more person in our party, but there wasn’t. I checked, and the seat was empty every time.
I carefully stood, holding Rowan’s seat tightly so I could stand beside him.
He glanced at me, eyes wide and brow furrowed with mad focus. “Sit with me?”
