Kapitel 29: The Fate Of Humanity

Several months passed after the sudden clash with the Xenon fleet at the edge of the Solar System. Moses and the others had been training diligently, sparring, and handling the occasional raid fleet that approached them. Although none of the fleets were comparable to the one that had attacked before, they still served as a good way for the new Paladins to flex their muscles.

Together with the pilots, the mechs also grew in their own way, adapting to their pilots more and more. Over the past few months, they had been slightly upgraded, and had gotten weapons tailor made for them. Before, there had not been enough time, but after several months of study, the limits of the mechs had been exposed to the scientists that were studying them, allowing for the construction of tailor made weapons.

Right now, Moses was in the middle of a spar with Richard. Both of them were only holding melee weapons, with Moses wielding an axe while Richard held onto a thick one handed sword.

Clang!

A deafening ring sounded through the enclosed space as Moses brought down his axe in a hefty chop, pushing Richard back a bit. He pushed on with his advantage, lashing out with a smooth combo that flowed seamlessly from one move to another.

Richard allowed the momentum of Moses' last strike to push him back a dozen meters before spinning and shooting forward, his thrusters carrying him forward with an impressive burst of momentum. Moses swiftly bent his mech to the side, dodging Richard's vertical slash, and putting a bit of distance between them before retaliating in the next second.

The two of them continued this high pitched battle for several more minutes before winding down. The battle did not have a clear winner, and the two of them were just about equally matched. After all, there was no way that a random pilot would be selected to become a Paladin. All Paladins were highly skilled pilots, with their piloting abilities undergoing another metamorphosis after reaching their current level.

When they finally stepped out of the cockpit of the powerful machines, they did so with contented smiles.

"Seems like this one ended it a tie. Too bad." Richard called out.

"Hmm, I agree, it should have ended in your loss." Moses nodded with a smirk on his face.

"Bah!" Richard grunted as he touched down, scowling at Moses. At this time, a team of technicians came over to check up on the mechs and perform some general maintenance.

"Good fight, you two." From the side of the hall, William came walking, clapping as he approached. He had a satisfied smile on his face, as if he was not disappointed by the performance of the two.

"Thanks." The two pilots nodded as they stopped in front of William. After the battle some months ago, they had been seeing him less. After all, he was just there to get them accustomed to the new base that time, and was not their attendant in any way. He was the personal assistant of the base commander, Rebecca, so he had a lot of duties to attend to.

"I managed to take a bit of time out of my schedule to see how you guys have been doing, and I have to say, you have not disappointed me. Compared to months ago, you have made a decent amount of progress." William complimented the pair of mech pilots. "Also, Rebecca wants to see you. I have already passed on the news to the others." He told them with a serious tone, hinting that the matter was a serious one.

After passing the information, he did not delay the pair, urging them to head to the commander's office. On the way there, they met up with Manuel, Bethany, and Anthony.

Among the four, Anthony and Bethany got along the most. Richard had been sour some time ago when Bethany turned down his advance, and he had been suspecting that she was seeing Anthony instead. Ultimately, he could do nothing about it, but go with the flow. He was mature enough not to be petty about such a small matter.

The five made their way to the commander's office quickly, and upon getting there, the hatch slid open on its own. Rebecca was seated behind her table, her fingers linked in front of her, and a serious expression on her face. Everyone instantly knew that this was a serious topic.

"Sit." Rebecca said firmly, waving her hand. The floor in front of her table slid open and five chairs rose up from underneath. The five promptly sat down, their spines straight as they waited for the news.

"I have received news from the frontlines." Was the first thing Rebecca said. He let her words linger to pique everyone's interest even more before continuing. "Things are heating up and the Xenon are pushing up back. A huge amount of resources are being poured into our outpost in the frontlines, and so it the amount of manpower. Regular pilots and starships won't do anymore. Our ship building industry is running full steam, and it is barely able to keep up.

"Some orders just came in, and sixty percent of the Paladins stationed in the Solar System will be transferred to the frontlines to hold the line until a breakthrough is made. All of you are included in the line-up."

"What?!" This time, the shock clearly overwhelmed them, and they burst out. "If we get transferred out, then who will protect Pluto?" Bethany asked. Manuel had a solemn expression on his face, but did not say a word. The others all reacted differently. Moses felt that fire within him burn hotter at the thought of being transferred to the frontlines to fight against Xenon day and night.

"You do not need to worry about how we will hold down the fort here. Provisions will be made. The reason I called you here was just to let you know in advance that you will be transferred out in seven days. Prepare well." Rebecca said with a tone of finality, making it clear that there was no room for arguments.
