Kapitel 18: Breaking A Promise

Happy reading.

"What do you think again, Skylar?" asked Renjana who was Skylar's mother gently.

Skylar's eyes rose to glance at her mother who was eating, sitting in front of her. Skylar was restless ever since he was at the dinner table, he was eager to say about what happened to Neil. But Skylar's tongue felt slur and stiffly refused him to move a step forward. He was afraid that things beyond this logic could not be properly digested by his mother and thought it was just nonsense.

Skylar shook his head in response, but his mother certainly wouldn't just stand by to accept his answer.

"Thinking about what?" asked Renjana again.

Skylar smiled faintly. "Nothing, Mom."

Skylar saw a smile blooming on his mother's face. What I'm thinking is not good news, Skylar thought. His mother smiled secretly while raising her eyebrows to ask.

"Have a girlfriend?" Skylar choked on his food he quickly grabbed a glass of water and gulped it down to the college. His hand grabbed the handkerchief and wiped his wet mouth.

'I'm thinking of your other son, Mom.'

"No, Mom. I don't have a girlfriend," Skylar replied awkwardly, she wanted to quickly run to the room and call his brother immediately instead of having to discuss this.

"So?" His mother smiled teasingly at him with a curious look.

"There's nothing I think about. Just Mom, too many chores at school are given simultaneously these days," Skylar said so far he had never thought about schoolwork this hard.

"Right? Nothing else?"

Skylar replied with a confident nod, his tongue very itchy to tell. He glanced back at Renjana and confidently began to say, "Mother, big brother is missing."

The clinking sound of the spoon stopped instantly, Renjana stared at Skylar with an expression that Skylar couldn't guess. It's not known exactly when they didn't bring up a conversation about Neil again, but even so, Skylar's days feel full of Neil who he wants to share with his mother only for Renjana to hear about Neil even once.

"Neil?" asked Renjana.

"Yes, just disappear." Skylar once again doubts whether he will tell his mother that he has been looking for Neil there.

"Did he tell you, Skylar?" asked Renjana carefully. Skylar furrowed her brows digesting his mother's question well, he sighed heavily when he understood who Renjana was referring to.

"Dad? I know for myself, Mom."

"Skylar is looking?"

Skylar nodded, he felt a little disliked to see Renjana's calmness, he didn't know if later his mother would believe him about how Neil disappeared. Skylar opened his voice again. "My mom and I are looking everywhere."

"You broke the promise, Skylar."

Skylar looked at his mother with twitching eyes from the many things Renjana could say she shouldn't be talking about it right now. "Promise?"

"That's right, you made a promise you made not to see Neil."

Skylar's anger arises, his eyes can not be separated staring at his mother who is now resuscitating his back on the chair. "What do you mean? Neil, my twin is missing. How can I be silent and continue to be bound by that stupid promise?"

"Skylar, those words shouldn't come out," Renjana said slowly almost squeaky. Her maternal gaze faded leaving a flat look on her face.

Skylar looked at Renjana once again with pure disappointment. The sound of the creak of the chair rubbing against the floor broke the flames of anger that Renjana threw at him, then Skylar left the dining table and entered his room.

***

Skylar never thought his life was a mess since he hadn't even set foot in junior high school. Everything was shattered as if someone were dousing a bucket of ash-colored paint all over his life. Skylar didn't know how fate was playing him in such a way. Push it into a hollow abyss, with no color. Skylar's mind was too dull when he thought his meeting with Neil after such a long time would take him in the days before the storm came.

It was all a dream that he had been developing for too long in his mind.

Because life, it's never that simple.

Skylar paid close attention to the phone number emblazoned on his phone's screen. He only needed to press once to connect on his call. However, once again doubt re-wrapped it up. In the end, Skylar pressed his thumb to open another contact and called him until the second connection occurred he just attached it to his ear.

"What's wrong?" The voice at the other end sounded tired, unlike anything Skylar had ever heard before. There was a deep breath and a heavy gust there.

"Why are you?" Skylar asked back, he immediately sat down his body to hear more clearly.

"I'm in a foreign place, how about?" he said sarcastically.

Skylar massaged the base of his nose and looked back at the phone screen to make sure the one he was calling was a Faiz. "You know, Faiz? Your parents are looking for you everywhere, they're calling the police."

Skylar heard Faiz sigh at the other end. "You have to stop it, Skylar. That's useless."

"I have to stop him how Faiz? If I stopped what your parents were doing, you should have been there too? Auntie is very sad."

"I want to go home," Faiz said in a low voice. Skylar also felt a sense of sadness hearing his best friend like this, but all the power he had tried. But the result is nil. But all that was left of Skylar was his belief to keep trying.

"I'll take you home," Skylar said steadily.

Skylar heard Faiz snort. "Don't make promises for things you know you won't be able to do."

Skylar felt anger quickly arise inside his listening to Faiz's words. "Why are you so desperate? How can I take you home if you're like this? Do you think I'm having fun here while you and Neil are in a strange place alone? Please don't be like that, Faiz. You just have to be sure, don't hurt yourself." Skylar didn't know he had held his breath for so long, and went back on with a whisper, "... and I."

Before Faiz had a chance to open his mouth, Skylar resumed in a low voice. "Just wait for me."

Then Skylar disconnected, he again submerged his body behind a blanket. His chest felt crowded with his own words, he bit his lips tightly holding the voice out. Another sense arose as if strangling her tightly, it was just a feeling in which Skylar feared all his speech could not be fulfilled.

Make new hopes for Neil and Faiz. But Skylar always echoed every line of prayer in his heart so that his hope would not only become a discourse that never materialized but made it real not just hope.

Instantly Skylar rose to his seat and closed his eyes briefly holding back the sudden attack. He remembered something in a book he had read with Neil when they were kids. Let's say that Skylar should try everything even if it starts with a children's book.
