Kapitel 8: A mind block

"I can't read her mind. There are no thoughts from her side…" He said, and at the same moment I felt a sharp pain in my finger, so I looked down and noticed some blood on it. It's a wonder, but seems like a piece of paper cut my finger while I was distracted by Rick's speech. I remembered where am I and immediately put my finger in my mouth, sucking the blood.

"Ah…" I moaned when my fangs cut my lips. I heard roars in the room, and it made me feel a bit scared. Then, Markus pressed a button on the small screen on his table and said to bring blood cocktails to this room immediately. Then he turned my chair to himself, took a handkerchief from the small pocket on his jacket, and started wiping up my lips from blood. I felt my cheeks blush and my thoughts started wandering around him, and thanks that man can't read them. Markus smirked as if reading my mind like an open book.

"Be careful next time, with paper and fangs. Both," he took my finger out of my mouth and wrapped it with his handkerchief, slightly smiling. He likes taking care of me, and that's a thing I haven't expected at all.

"Sorry," I whispered with my only lips for him to hear it, sat straight, then pressed my finger with a handkerchief to my lips.

"From now on," Markus began, straightening up in his chair, "You came for our meetings being full. You work with me and with Aurora, and I don't care about your thoughts of her being a girl, or anything else. If you don't respect my choice, you don't deserve to be in my family. That's all for today. About the next meeting, you will be informed a day before, as usual… Now, get out. "

He leaned back in his chair and turned it in my direction.

"For now, we need another three candidates for caporegimes. Information about them is in that folder. Look over them and tell me the names till tomorrow's morning…" he said with his cold voice, looking at my eyes, and waiting for others to get out.

"Fine," I looked at the folder, then back at Markus, "If you will give me a few minutes, I can tell you the names…"

"No need to be in a hurry. Caporegimes are as much important, as you. They need to be well-examined…" he started stroking his chin as if struggling with some thoughts.

"I examined some of them during that meeting…" I said and turned my head to look at the closing door, but my chin was caught by male cold fingers, turned back and my eyes met his onyx eyes. He stared at me, stroking my lips with his thumb, while his left hand squeezed my chair and pulled it closer to himself. I took his thumb in my mouth, sucking it and playing with it using my tongue. He slightly moaned, looking at me from head to toes, then put his right hand on my neck, pulled me closer and my heart stopped beating, waiting for a kiss.

We heard a knock at the door, and I was ready to jump away from him for others to not expose us, but he didn't allow me to move away even for an inch. Markus just turned his head in the direction of the door.

"Yes?"

"It's Rick. May I come in?"

"No", Markus tilt his head to the left side, as if waiting for further explanations.

"I just wanted to discuss dhampir… Aurora's mind block… I couldn't hear her thoughts at the meeting, from the time she entered the room with you till the last minute of my presence there…" Rick started explaining as if he was a mad scientist, who found another field for his experiments.

"Come in…" Markus looked at me, then took his thumb out of my mouth, and slipped with his right hand to my knee, but hasn't moved me away from him. I straightened my back and looked at the door.

Rick opened the door, stepped inside the room, and froze, looking at me.

"I thought…"

"You can't hear her yet?" Markus pressed his back to his chair, relaxing his body but still having his right hand at my bare knee. However, Rick hasn't seen it because of the table, that was helping us to hide.

"No. I thought she left…" Rick closed the door behind, then looked at Markus, "Can I come closer? She's not a vampire, maybe I need to touch her to hear her thoughts?"

"When it was a problem for you to read thoughts at distance? You succeeded even reading humans' minds…" Markus turned his head in my direction, narrowing his eyes as if he caught some interesting thought.

"Never. It wasn't a problem before…" Rick looked at me again, and suddenly I felt my head hurt. It was like an immediate reaction to something, that was disturbing my mind. I put my thin fingers to the temples, trying to minimize the headache by massaging the temples of the head, when unexpectedly I heard a movement near me. I didn't want to look at what was going on because I closed my eyes. It was a strong, sudden headache.

"You feel it?" Markus's voice was soft as if he really cares about me having a headache because Rick attempts to read my mind.

"Yeah…" I sighed, then opened my eyes, and looked at his onyx eyes, drowning there, "I feel he's trying to read my mind, but... Something stops him and causes me a headache…"

"Rick, stop…" he commanded, then squatted down near me, and put his hands on my knees, looking thoroughly into my eyes. He was truly amused and couldn't even hide it.

Slowly, the headache began to go away, making me relax in my seat and look into his eyes. I felt he knows the reason for all of this, but keep silent as if thoroughly thinking about it over and over. Then, he stood up and turned his face to Rick, who was still standing near the doorway.

"Leave us for now…" he waited for Rick to leave us, then turned around and held me in his hand, still without any words. I felt my head still slightly hurt, so I didn't want to ask any questions. However, when I took his hand and stood up, the ground shifted under my feet and his reactions were fast enough to catch me and press me to his body, while his other hand rested on my back. He looked into my eyes, then suddenly his hand moved under my knees, and he took me into his arms.

"Markus… It's unnecessary…" I said, but actually, I was happy he did that. I was afraid to step and lose my balance anyway.

"Shhh…" he went to the door, then alongside the corridor straight to the staircase, but to my wonder, he passed by it, turned to the left, and pressed the button on the wall near the staircase. It made me smile. Actually, I thought he'll give me a room on the third floor, or any other, but seems he will lend me his private floor.

When the elevation came and the doors opened, Markus went inside with me in his arms, then the doors closed, and I closed my eyes with them. I felt so tired I didn't even notice when I fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes, I stretched, then sat down on the bed and put away the blanket, when I noticed I'm not in the same clothes I was before. It was a comfortable silk nightgown of a knee-length with a plunging neckline. I smirked. It was Markus, I'm sure.

I stood up, made the bed, then looked around the room. It was a comfortable modern big room with beige walls and golden paintings on them of different shapes and sizes. There was a white carpet on the floor. All the furniture in the room was of redwood: the bed, the wardrobe, the bookshelf, and the dressing table. It was a big window from the ceiling to the floor, covered with black thick curtains. I opened the wardrobe and looked around at all the clothes hanging there. There were a lot of different dresses, costumes, and other things. I closed it, then turned around and opened the curtains. Everything was dark outside, but I noticed a handle on the window, pushed it, and found out it leads to the balcony. I went outside, and a light wind started flirting with my body and my hair. I flinched, it was a little cold, so I turned away and bumped into a strong male chest. Some cold fingers caught my chin, put it up and his cold lips touched mine in a gentle kiss. I sighed unexpectedly, then hugged his neck and kissed his lips back.

His hands moved down and hugged my waist, raising my nightgown a little. Markus's kiss became more passionate, but still, it was so gentle and sweet, that it made me melt and hug his neck tightly.

Then, he broke the kiss and put his fingers on my face, caressing it. His touches sent a gentle flow of excitement through my body. He was looking at my eyes for some time, as if studying what was inside them, then bent his head down and his cold lips touched my neck, leaving a hot kiss. I closed my eyes and threw my head back, freeing a sigh from my lips. Markus put his hands on my butt, took me up, and made me sit on the railings. I hugged his neck tightly, enjoying his actions a lot. He wasn't doing anything special, but his cold kisses on my hot skin were making a double effect, spinning my head.

A long moan fell from my lips, and it set his body on fire. He straightened up and took my chin with his hot fingers. It was like they were burning with a fire on the inside.

"How can you control it?" I asked, looking with my cloudy eyes at him. Markus smiled with the tips of his lips.

"Centuries of practice…" he whispered, then kissed my lips again, "I can hardly resist touching you…"

"Don't resist…" I whispered, closing my eyes… "Never…"

I wrapped his neck with my hands, while he wrapped my waist and pressed me towards his muscled body, kissing my lips gently.

Kapitel 9: The case

I closed the folder with the information about the candidates for caporegimes' positions and started massaging my temples. My head hurts as if Rick is near and trying to read my mind again, so I looked around. I'm still on Markus's private floor, and there's no one except me in this rich living room. It was quite large and could easily accommodate all those vampires, who were at yesterday's business meeting, and it seems like even more.

The walls were of a comfortable and relaxing for eyes light-green color, white carpet on the floor, and all the furniture in the room was of a redwood, again. Seems someone is keen on redwood.

I looked around all the furniture in the room, and I'm pretty sure that even if the living room is pretty large, there is not so much furniture, so Markus might prefer a minimalistic style. In the center of the living room were two black sofas standing in front of each other, a coffee table between them, and a fireplace near the sofas. The big windows were covered with black curtains, which were put aside to fill the room with the sunlight. There was also a floor lamp near the sofas, a bookshelf on the other side of the wall, and a lot of paintings of different artists on the free-from furniture walls.

Suddenly, I heard a movement behind my back, which made me turn my head and face a handsome young man with pale skin and golden eyes. He was dressed in a black fitted suit and was standing behind me with a tray in his hands. He came across the sofa and put the tray on the coffee table, near my knees. There was a large cup of coffee and a plate of freshly made pancakes with honey on the tray. I looked up at the man, and he smiled friendly at me.

"Mr. Malone asked to serve you breakfast when you'll awake…" he straightened up and looked at me, slightly smiling.

"Uh… Thank you, but I'm not hungry… Please, leave only a cup of coffee here…" I asked with a slight smile on my lips, then looked back at the two folders on my knees. My heart started beating faster when I saw the second folder full of documents of the psycho-maniac case. I suddenly found out I don't want to investigate it because… It means when that psycho will be in jail, I'll return to the police and will forget about Markus forever. Do I want this? Certainly not, but what about those killed people?

I'm having too many questions in my head recently that make my head hurt, so I should either stop thinking or get some answers at least.

"I'm sorry, Miss Aurora, but if you will not have breakfast, I'll be fired. Please, don't make me lose my job… And I'm not sure that you want me to feed you…" he made a pleading grimace on his face. I rolled my eyes at him.

"What?" I put the folders aside and started massaging my temples again. Everything around makes my head hurt, and it's getting annoying.

"That's one of Mr. Malone's warnings to me if you'll not have your breakfast…" a man said, then looked down at the tray, "So shall I take it away or leave it right here?"

"Leave it here. You can be free, thanks." I didn't even care whether he left or not, I just bent down, took the cup of coffee, and sat straight, then opened the folder with police documents, and started looking through it once again. Something, in this case, makes me doubt, but I don't know what makes me feel like that, and I don't know in what part of the case I have doubts. Everything is too complicated.

"You haven't touched the breakfast?" The cold voice behind my back made me flinch, and almost spill the coffee. I closed the folder, put the cup of coffee back on the table, and turned around to see Marcus. He was in back classic pants, a white shirt and a black tie, and his favorite black leather Bottomline oxford shoes. I looked at his face, then turned back and sighed.

"I'm not hungry, and your chef or waiter isn't guilty. I'm sure they are tasty, so no need to fire him…" I said and took a cup of coffee back into my hands.

"I hear the irritation in your voice…" he sat near me, and took the folder with the police case in his hands, observing it.

"It's not because of you. Those headaches are getting annoying…" I took a sip of coffee, then looked at Markus. I felt an inner feeling I can expose my feelings to him. Furthermore, I felt the need to tell him everything I have in my heart and soul, so I put the cup of coffee back on the table, turned to Markus, and looked into his eyes. He felt my thoroughly look and turned his head in my direction.

"You might have too many questions in your head…" he suddenly said, stroking my chin as if asking me to tell him everything I have on my soul.

"You're right. I don't understand my reactions to the latest news. Two or three days ago, I was thinking I'm a normal human girl working as a police officer. Today I'm a dhampir working as a mafia Underboss undercover. Also, I might have some ability to block others' attempts to read my mind. Ah, and I had sex with a vampire, drank his blood, and felt under his charm and spell…" I stopped for a moment, looking at Markus and waiting for any explanations or answers, but he was silent, so I opened my mouth to continue when he put his thumb on my lips.

"It's a bit of an unusual reaction, yes, but it can only prove that deep in your mind you already had thoughts about being unusual… Or about the supernatural world that might exist for real. So now when it is revealed, your reaction is calm, because you were prepared…" he leaned closer and lightly kissed my lips, "And about the vampire and falling into his charms… I want to hear more…"

I started breathing deeply, feeling my heart go on a race and blood boil in my veins. Likewise, I put my hand on Markus's cheek and started caressing it gently. He liked it.

"Markus…" I whispered, then wrapped his neck and kissed his lips, feeling my heartbeat fasten even more. He hugged my waist and pulled me closer to himself.

"Continue…" he was looking straight into my eyes as if waiting for something and demanding me to continue. I tried to calm down my breath to not have a breathy voice, and he was just waiting patiently with a serious expression on his pretty pale face.

"It's hard to explain, but I definitely fell under your charm…" I blushed, then turned away, being embarrassed, took a cup of coffee and started making slow sips, covering my face under it. He chuckled, then stood up and went closer to the window, looking at the outside, and hiding from the sunlight under the curtain.

"You have time. No need to be in a hurry…" he put his hands in his pockets, looking to the outside and probably thinking about something, while I was drinking coffee and thinking about other questions, I have in my head. He interrupted my flow of mental tortures with his low velvet voice, "If you have any other questions in your head, tell them now…"

"…or remain silent forever?" I giggled, then cleared my throat, "Actually, I have some doubts in that psycho case, but I can't explain which ones. It's just… Strange…"

"Any details?" he turned to me, and I put the cup aside, put the folder on the coffee table, and asked him to come closer. He sat near me looking at the folder, so I opened it and took out all the photos of the victims. It was twelve of them, six female kids and six female adults. Markus took them from my hands and started looking at them closely.

"All the females, either kids or adults, look a bit of like… Me?" I asked, looking at Markus. He frowned, looking over all of them, then put the photos back on the table.

"I see." He was short in words, as always, but he might have had deep thoughts due to his facial expression.

"Even, if to take it as a coincidence, and to sign it to one of the maniac's inverted desires, there are other strange things I was saying to the boss, but he kept silent. All the criminal places where the victims were killed and raped, were too clear, and the blood was poured on the floor like someone prepared the murder scene for a movie. And all the pieces of evidence from all bodies were the same unknown fingerprints on the neck and thighs, cigarettes near all the victims' feet, and marks on their necks from sucking their blood. The picture is exactly the same in all twelve murders…" I stopped for a moment, looking at the mess I created on the table by showing the pieces of evidence and proving my words. He was looking carefully at all the mess and thinking thoroughly, then his phone vibrated, he took it, turned on the loudspeaker, so I could hear it too, and continued looking at shreds of evidence on the table.

"Mr. Malone, you asked to remember about the meeting with the mafia bosses in the nightclub, that will start in half an hour…" I heard the voice on the other side, and it reminded me of the same man who could read minds, Rick.

"Thanks, Rick. I'll drive on my own, ask the guard to be ready in five minutes…" he said, then looked at me, while turning off the call, "Take that folder with you, and get ready, there's not so much time left".

He looked over me, then stood up and started helping me to bring the folder to the previous ordered position, then took it in his hands and looked at his watch.

"I'll be quick!" I promised and ran to my bedroom.

"I'm waiting outside, in a car…" were the last words I heard before running out of the room.
