"I still can't believe how crazy you were back then" said Pete as he looked at Natasha and she laughed.
"Well yes, but now that I think about it with an adult mind, I was wayyy off, and what I did was very dangerous, and it could have ended up badly" said Natasha as she laughed.
"That is true, but don't lie to me that if things were to repeat themselves you would not do it again" said Pete as he laughed.
"Well of course I won't, I wouldn't change I single thing that I did" said Natasha as she laughed.
"I was just so relieved that you got your job back" said Natasha as she smiled.
"Of course I did, Bermudez was forced to give me back my job when word came to his superiors, your dad and you really gave them something to think about" said Pete as he laughed.
"Of course we did partner" said Natasha as she gave Pete a fist pump and he laughed.
"Yes we did partner, but you also got into serious trouble with your dad" said Pete as he laughed.
"Oh don't remind me about that, I was grounded for three months because of that, and my dad restricted me from watching any tv shows about cops, I guess it was his way to try to curb my imagination, but I didn't argue with him, I knew that I did do something wrong" said Natasha as she laughed.
"You still have the best dad ever, mine would disown me if I did something like that, he almost did" said Pete as Natasha laughed.
"You mean had…" said Natasha as she smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry Nat, for being insensitive" said Pete.
"No Pete, not at all, you were not insensitive, but yes, you are right, I had the best dad ever, he will always and forever be the best man in my life, him and you Pete" said Natasha as she smiled and Pete smiled.
"It still hurts doesn't it?" asked Pete.
"More than you know, holding onto the memory because you are too scared to lose it and forget it… it makes you think and long for him to come back, but you know he can't" said Natasha.
"They say that it gets easier in time, but the truth is that it gets harder, because the further away it is from the time it happened, the fresher the memory Is in your mind, replaying, thinking that you could have done something, anything to stop it, if only I had been there" said Natasha.
"Oh Nat" said Pete as he hugged Natasha.
"Oh Pete, I don't want to cry right now" said Natasha as she sighed.
"But you know that you can cry if you want to" said Pete as Natasha nodded.
"I know, but it's Valentine's day, not crying day" said Natasha as she laughed and Pete laughed.
"You feel better now?" asked Pete as Natasha nodded with a smile.
…
"La, la, la" said Joy with a giggle as Dom unbuckled the seatbelt on her car seat and carried her out.
"Looks like someone enjoyed her time alone with her daddy am I right?" asked Dom as he laughed and Joy giggled as she nodded her head.
"Yes I did daddy" said Joy as she and Dom walked into the house, it was 7pm, Dom knew that Joy still had school tomorrow, and hence why he had made sure to bring her home early, before he faced Natasha's wrath and she scolded him about letting Joy stay up late on a school night.
"We should do this more often princess, what do you think?" asked Dom with a smile as Joy nodded.
"Yes daddy, and next time Mommy should come with us, then it will be very fun" said Joy as she laughed and Dom just smiled, he didn't know what to think about that, he was sure that Natasha wouldn't go anywhere with Joy as long as he was there.
"Mommy, Mommy" called Joy as she called out for Natasha, she could not wait to tell her what happened and how much fun she had, and all the sweets and ice cream she had.
"Oh Young master, Joy, you have returned" said Alfred as he smiled.
"Yes we have Alfred" said Dom as he smiled.
"Hello Alfred" said Joy as she smiled.
"Hello Joy" said Alfred with a smile.
"Alfred do you know where my mommy is? She is not answering me" said Joy as usually when she called for Natasha, Natasha would answer her.
"Ahh Joy your mommy went out" said Alfred.
"She did?" asked Dom in surprise as Alfred nodded.
"Out with who?" asked Dom.
"If I am not mistaken I believe that it was with Commander Lawson" said Alfred as hearing that it was with Pete made him feel more relieved he knew that he wouldn't let Natasha do anything crazy.
"I see" said Dom.
"Yes young Master" said Alfred as he smiled.
"Alfred did she say when she would come back?" asked Joy.
"I'm not sure Joy, she said that she would be back soon" said Alfred.
"Okay" said Joy as she smiled.
"Come on princess, let's get you ready for bed" said Dom as Joy nodded.
"Bye Alfred" said Joy as she waved at Alfred and Alfred smiled as he waved at her and Dom carried her up the stairs.
…
"Aren't you wondering how Joy is doing right now? It's rather late, it's 7pm" said Pete as he ate the last of his meal.
"Hmm, well not really, I am sure that she's fine with her father wherever they went, besides, he knows the rules, it's a school night, and she can't stay up past her bedtime, so they have to be home by now" said Natasha as she replied.
"You aren't in a rush to go home?" asked Pete.
Not at all, it's not every day that you arrange a picnic for us, so let me enjoy it today, I already gave him all the instructions on what Joy should eat, and hopefully he followed them, or else, if she wakes up with a terrible tummy ache tomorrow, it's all on him" said Natasha as Pete laughed.
"Is this what parenting Is like?" asked Pete as he laughed.
"Well yes, to some extent, but Joy's father and I more like co- parent Joy" said Natasha.
"I want to know how that works, because last time I called Dom it seems like he's having a hard time" said Pete as he laughed.
"And since when did you stay being friends with that man?" asked Natasha.
"Well we both have a mutual connection, and that's you, if anything, we both truly care about you" said Pete as Natasha scoffed.
"Don't give me that nonsense Pete, that man of all men, care about me? You must be seeing things" said Natasha.
"It's true Nat, I am serious, I thought that he didn't, but he still cares about you, when I told him about Romanoff, he seemed genuinely worried" said Pete.
"Genuinely worried my foot, he doesn't need to worry about me, he should face his own life while I face mine" said Natasha.
"Nat, I know how you can get, and how stubborn you are, which is why I knew that I needed some extra help in trying to keep you away from trouble, and that's why I called him, I don't want you getting into any more trouble" said Pete.
"Well you worry about nothing Pete, I know better than to get myself into trouble, I ama done with it" said Natasha.
"It was totally unnecessary for you to get that man involved, now I won't hear the end of it, he would probably send people to follow me, heck he could even ask Michael to bug my calls, he's that controlling and I hate it so much, which is why I don't want him to know anything about me" said Natasha.
"You really no longer love him do you?" asked Pete as Natasha rested her head on the picnic blanket and she looked up into the sky as Pete did the same.
"I stopped loving that man a long time ago, love died a while back, all that was left of obsession, hurt and anger, and I'm done with it" said Natasha as she sighed.
"Is it wrong that I don't believe you?" asked Pete.
"Well I don't blame you Pete, it is hard to believe, I mean, in all honesty, he was my first love, and well things happened, and I was convinced that I wanted something that he did not want, he never loved me, or at least not in the way that I loved him, and I realize now that, that's okay, I should have never tried to push something that wasn't meant to be" said Natasha as she sighed.
"Are you hurt?" asked Pete.
"No, not at all" said Natasha, if her thirty years of experience in her past life and in her twenty six years of experience in this life, she would say that she was mature enough to move on.
"I mean, such is life, we win some, and we lose some, things don't always turn out the way we expect it to, and it's best to just move on, because dwelling on one singular mistake can ruin the rest of your life" said Natasha.
"You are right Nat" said Pete as he knew that she was very right.
"Of course I am, if you don't know that by now, then you aren't serious" said Natasha as Pete laughed.
"Nat, can I confess something to you?" asked Pete as Natasha turned to look at him.
"What is it Pete?" asked Natasha as Pete knew that he had to do this.
"The truth is that I love you… and not in the way you would think, I love you in a romantic way" said Pete as after years of holding it in, he just had to say it, he knew that he had to, and he was scared of her reaction, but to his surprise Natasha did not say anything, or look shocked at all.
"You knew already didn't you?" asked Pete.
"Well to some extent yes… but I wasn't sure if I was right or just seeing things" said Natasha as Pete looked at her.
"I am such an idiot, of course you knew" said Pete.
"No Pete, don't say that, you aren't an idiot, and I didn't know for sure… I just saw some pointers which I was not sure of" said Natasha as Pete looked at her.
"When did you first notice that I had feelings for you?" asked Pete.
"Well a few years ago, just before I got married you… well I guess, your attitude towards me getting married was much more than just a friend or a brother looking out for me, it was more like you were angry, not worried" said Natasha.
"And I remember when you know who tried to talk to you like friends, you were just so hostile towards him, and you always tried to talk me out of it, it was just weird honestly, and I didn't get what was going on with you, I just thought that you would get over it, and I knew that you were behaving weirdly" said Natasha.
"And I thought that I was smooth at hiding my feelings" said Pete as he laughed and Natasha laughed.
"Oh you were, I mean, till right now, I wasn't really sure, but now I am" said Natasha.
"You know when I started to fall in love with you?" asked Pete as Natasha shook her head.
"Summer break of when you just turned eighteen and we went to my parent's lake house together, I don't know I started to see you in a different light, you were just the annoying little sister, but you were a grown woman, I started to develop feelings for you" said Pete.
"And I was so stupid for doing that" said Pete.
"No you weren't Pete not at all, I mean, I should have brought it up, but you know why I didn't?" asked Natasha as Pete shook his head.
"Well because I didn't want to ruin our friendship over something as stupid as love, I mean just look at what happened to me and the great Dominic White? We were friends, and then love got in the way and now we are worse than strangers" said Natasha as she and Pete looked at each other.
"I didn't want the beautiful friendship that we have to be ruined by something as one dimensional as love, I mean I love you so much, my best confidant, my best friend, my everything, when I'm in trouble, I know that you have my back, and that's why I didn't want to make things weird or comfortable by asking you about it" said Natasha as she smiled.
"I didn't want it to be like that as well, so I guess in a way we both didn't want to ruin our friendship" said Pete as he laughed and Natasha laughed.
"No, not at all, you see how easy it is to talk things out" said Natasha as Pete nodded.
"So do you still love me?" asked Natasha.
"Well of course I love you, I will always love you, but my romantic feelings for you have gone, I thought about it well, and it's not worth it, I know that you don't see me in that light" said Pete as he smiled.
"I am so glad that you said that Pete because I don't know what I would do if you and I stopped being friends" said Natasha as Pete smiled at her.
"I know better than to risk our many years of friendship for something as light as this" said Pete as he laughed.
"I agree" said Natasha.
"But Nat, you have to promise me something" said Pete.
"Which is?" asked Natasha.
"That you won't shut out your heart against love just because of what happened between you and Dom" said Pete.
"Oh Pete, you ask something very hard of me, I can't promise you that, and I can't promise myself that, romantic love isn't everything, I mean I already have my baby, and she takes up the entire space in my heart" said Natasha as she laughed and Pete laughed.
"I know Nat, but your heart can still have some space for love, it won't kill you" said Pete as he laughed.
"Oh but it did" said Natasha as she laughed.
"Don't make me promise that Pete, really, I can't, honestly, I done with love, it's just a decision I reached on my own, on what's best for me" said Natasha as she laughed.
"Alright Nat, if you say so" said Pete as he gave her a kiss on the forehead and she smiled.
"Come on it's late now, let me take you home" said Pete as he smiled and he got up as he helped Natasha up.
"Alright Pete, thank you, thank you for everything" said Natasha as she smiled.
"No, thank you Nat, for being you, and such a wonderful friend" said Pete as he smiled and Natasha smiled at him.
