Kapitel 6: Daryl Dixon.

The morning sun beamed through the front window of the car as I awoke from a long sleep.

My second night in the apocalypse went very well: I gained a beautiful woman, a new ride and a few new abilities too.

I got up and stretched only to notice that Amy wasn't beside me, I guess she was an early bird.

I changed my clothes to the other set of army clothes I got from the camp before stepping on my belt and heading out.

The air felt good against my skin as I walked into the camp.

I had my bag with me though it wasn't exactly full. My rifle and the hosepipe were there, along with two sets of dirty clothing.

I walked towards Carol who was wandering around grabbing dirty clothes.

"Hi there, I didn't catch your name yesterday. I'm Leon." I said as I reached out my hand.

"Carol." she said with a smile as she shook my hand. She spied the clothes peaking from the top of my bag before continuing. "Would you like me to wash those for you?"

"If you would be so kind. Thank you." I said before handing over the dirty clothing of the past two days.

"It isn't a problem, honey." she replied before heading about to do her chores. I couldn't help but look at her behind as she did.

I continued on through the camp and noticed Amy and Andrea talking rather heatedly towards the edge of the forest, well at least they were talking and not screaming.

I decided to leave them for now, though I knew they were surely talking about me, and headed towards the RV where Jim stood with Dale.

"Good morning fellas. What are you doing?" I asked as I approached them from behind.

"Morning Leon." Jim greeted. "Trying to patch up this radiator hose, though at this point it's more duct tape than hose."

I laughed at his pessimistic joke before bidding adieu and walking towards Glenn who was looking forlorn.

"What's wrong man?" I asked as I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Nothing, I'm just tired. Didn't get a lick of sleep last night." he replied whilst rubbing his eyes.

"Well why don't you go back to bed?" I asked, it wasn't like he had a job to go to or anything.

"Can't. Been put on foraging duty this morning, though I don't have a clue what I'm doing." He replied. He honestly looked pretty bummed out.

"Sorry about that man. Anyway I've got a quick question for you." I continued. I was trying to get him in a better mood before I asked, but that seemed impossible for now.

"Sure what is it?" He questioned with a yawn.

"I just wanted to know if there were any sporting stores towards the edge of the city? You seemed to know your way around pretty well, so I thought I'd ask you." I asked back. I have been wanting a bow since I entered this world. Don't get me wrong, guns were great, I can shoot them well. But nothing beats the feeling of a bow in your hand.

I could shoot with near pinpoint accuracy at a range of 80 metres with a good bow, and I missed the feeling.

"I know a place, though it's a bit further in than where we were yesterday. It's in the opposite direction though so we shouldn't hit the hoard." He answered my query well causing a smile to bloom on my face.

"Could you show me on a map?" I asked him but he shook his head.

"No need. I'll take you there later on. Daryl should be back soon and I think he would benefit from the store too." He was rather thoughtful, even thinking about other people's needs before heading back into the death trap that is Atlanta.

I thanked him before heading over to where the girls were washing the group's clothing.

"Heya ladies, how are you doing this morning?" I asked as I approached Lori, Amy and Andrea who were hanging up some damp clothes on a line.

"We're doing just fine thank you Leon."Lori replied. Andrea ignored me while Amy walked to my side and gave me a kiss before speaking. "Morning." She spoke sweetly with a smile on her face. "Morning, beautiful." I replied, a little surprised at how brazen she was being.

"How did you sleep?" I asked her as I looked down at her, still smiling.

"Good. Very good." She responded.

I would have continued the niceties but I was interrupted by none other than her older sister.

"Clothes won't fold themselves Ams." she said in an exasperated tone.

Amy gave me another kiss before heading back to work.

It was then that Rick walked up behind me.

"Morning Rick." I said while I passed him as he went to talk to his wife.

"Good morning Leon." He replied before going and conversing with Lori.

I remembered this scene from the show. I hoped it went the same since that would mean I was about to meet one of my favourite male characters in the whole franchise.

"Ahhh! Mom!" A girlish scream echoed out in the woods nearby.

I quickly bolted in that direction, ready to face a lone walker.

I was shocked however as it wasn't the same situation as in the show. I walked in on a walker, but it wasn't eating Daryl's dear, it was about to tear into Sophia's neck.

I acted quick, not thinking about the consequences, I pulled out my Glock and fired two shots into the side of the zombie's head.

As the walker fell down beside a struggling Sophia, the rest of the guys came into the clearing with shocked looks on their faces.

I was shocked as well, though for a different reason. Sophia had managed to get out from underneath the corpse and ran into me, crying into my chest.

I was taken aback. I really didn't know what to do in such a situation so I just ended up patting her head and letting her cry.

"Sophia, are you okay?!" Carol finally made it to the scene and embraced Sophia, who was still crying into my chest.

"Thank you so much Leon. You saved my baby." Carol said as she squeezed Sophia between us.

"It's no problem Carol. It's what should be done." I was polite about it. Yes I had saved her life, but it was inadvertently. If I hadn't been heading in that direction because of my anticipation of Daryl, Sophia probably would have died here.

After a long talk about why the walkers were coming up the mountain, Daryl finally showed up.

He managed to finish the deer this time around, that's probably what changed from the show. The deer had a bolt sunk into its eye socket, probably thanks to Daryl's skill.

I stole it right away. I could see the potential of this skill a mile off.

Some of the guys helped Daryl carry the deer he was dragging towards the edge of the camp where he started to butcher it.

"So who're the new guys?" Daryl asked in his trademark southern accent as he gutted the deer.

"Rick Grimes. I worked with Shane back in King County." Rick said as he extended his hand. Daryl ignored the gesture and turned to me.

"Leon." I responded to Daryl's look with a nod.

"You ever butcher a deer Leon?" Daryl asked. How the fuck did he know?

"One or two." I replied whilst I set down my bag and started on the back of the carcass. I knew what he wanted help with since I'd done this hundreds of times before.

We didn't talk for a bit as we were preoccupied with skinning the carcass. Rick and Shane just left us to it.

"I assume you're Daryl?" I finally broke the silence as he strung up the skinless carcass.

"That's right. What's it to ya?" He replied as he began to separate the cuts.

"I'm heading into town soon. Glenn said you might be interested in the sporting store, that's where I'm heading." I explained as I put the guts in a plastic bin.

"You're heading into town?" He asked, I really need to do something about my look. How come everyone automatically thought I was soft? Maybe it's the baby face, I'll have to stop shaving.

"Yeah I need a good bow." I replied skirting around his rude tone.

He just replied with a curt nod before finishing up his task and heading to a makeshift smoker that was set up by the campfire.

"Hey Merle! Get your ugly ass out here!" he called as he placed the meat on a sheet nearby.

"Daryl hold up a minute, I gotta talk to ya." Shane said as Daryl was looking around for his brother. Come to think of it I had forgotten about him till now.

"What you want?" Daryl replied.

"We gotta talk about Merle. Something happened in Atlanta." Shane seemed like he was being deliberately ambiguous.

"He dead?" Daryl asked with visible apprehension.

"No I ain't dead you little shit!" Merle called from out of view.

Everyone turned to see him peeking his upper body out from under the back of the RV, his hands now cuffed in front of him.

"What the hell ya doin down there?" Daryl asked with confusion on his face as he approached him.

"Oh just catching some Zs in the shade." He replied with sarcasm.

"Your brother's a danger to us all. He put the rest of the group in danger. Fired off shots in the city, he brought thousands of walkers down on them. If Leon hadn't gone down there and brought them back they would all be dead right now." Shane explained.

"Plus he beat the shit out of me and T-Dog. Then held us all at gunpoint. The vato's unhinged." Morales pitched in after Rick was done.

Daryl stood in shock and disbelief when he heard that. It wasn't that he didn't think it was possible, it definitely was, he was more amazed that his brother finally snapped.

Just as he was going to jump to denial, Merle spoke up.

"Yeah so what? That fucking taco-bender and his nigger buddy were asking for it. How fucking dare they think they can boss me around?! I only did what I had to, as any man should do in my position." He said with an almost crazed look in his eyes.

You could tell from a glance that he was suffering withdrawal symptoms, though he was probably pretty insane anyway.

Daryl didn't even say anything at his brother's words, he just scowled in his direction before going back to the meat.

Merle was still mumbling racial slurs and telling himself how righteous he was, fucking trash.

Daryl set up the meat in the smoker after cutting it to size. Then he started to stew the squirrels, the ladies joined in at this point and Daryl left in a huff.

During this time I went to sort out a canteen for myself by copying Amy's. I then made sure I had everything I needed in my truck before approaching Glenn to head out.

"Ready when you are." I said as I approached Glenn from behind.

"Sure, just a sec." Glen said before running to his tent and grabbing his gear. It struck me as strange that he wasn't carrying a weapon but I let him be.

We then came to Daryl who was cleaning his bolts, of which he only had four.

"You ready to go?" I asked, to which he just nodded and grunted before heading to the back of my truck.

It was then that Shane confronted us, a face full of malice.

"What the hell are you guys doing?" He yelled as he got far to close to Daryl.

"What's it to you pig?" Daryl immediately went on the offensive as he shot an insult at the former policeman.

"Hey, calm down guys." I said as I stepped between them. "We're just heading in to town. We'll be two hours at most, in and out no problem."

Shane's face softened for a second at my calm response be he soon started arguing back.

"Didn't you see that walker before? They're moving out of the cities, you leaving puts us all at risk. Not to mention the gunshots you fired before, they could have drawn more up the mountain."

I honestly didn't know why he had a stick up his ass, but I just ignored him and went to the van.

"I'll be back before dark, don't worry." I said to him.

I wouldn't miss tonight. If I remember correctly tonight is when the group of zombies attack the camp. Now I know not everything has been the same thus far, but I just felt on edge without a bow. I didn't feel safe without one in my arsenal.

I didn't want to waste anymore time here, so I hopped into the driver's seat of my van.

I got a welcome surprise as I did so, in the form of a geared up pretty blonde beside me.

I just smiled and gave her a kiss before closing my door.

I didn't ask her to come as I though she was going to try and patch things up with her sister, however if she wanted to come along I wasn't going to stop her. She needed experience after all.
