The doorbell rang, and Khalil went to open the door.

Rae Bennett had arrived. It was very cold outside, and a red scarf covered her lower half face. She pulled it down with her hand, smiling as she clasped her hands together and gave New Year's greetings.

"Uncle Wright, happy New Year."

"Happy New Year to you too." Khalil shouted back into the house: "Wyatt, Rae is here."

Wyatt hung up the phone and came over from the balcony.

"You two entertain yourselves for a bit; I'm going to make noodles." Khalil went back to the kitchen.

Today, Rae Bennett wore a pair of red fan-shaped earrings which twirled as she moved.

Wyatt looked at her earrings twice.

"Why didn't you sleep in longer?"

"Today is the first day of the New Year; it's bad to sleep in."

Simba came over and scratched at Wyatt's slippers.

It was hungry.

Wyatt went to the storage cabinet on the balcony to get some cat food for it.

Rae followed him: "Wyatt."

"Hmm."
