Jessica opened the door. The sight before her made her gasp. Her breath caught in her lungs as horror spread across her face. "No!" she said silently, disbelieving what her eyes showed her. Is it possible to see something so heartbreaking yet still defend it? Inside, Jessica's mind raced with a thousand excuses. She found so many ways to defend Nick, but her attitude was living proof of her gullibility and naivety. The man was so caught up in what he was doing that he didn't notice the open front door or the figure standing at the doorstep.
At that moment, Jessica cursed her decision to open that door or even arrive at his place in the middle of the night. It wasn't about her; it was about what she felt. It was about how stupid she felt. It was about allowing herself to become vulnerable to a man who cared little for her. How could she not see it? How could she not read between the lines and realize how much of a jerk her boyfriend was?
"It can't be," were the only words she managed to whisper. She tried to make sense of it. How could science explain that what she saw was only an illusion? Maybe just imagination, and her boyfriend was indeed faithful. But could this really play out for all these seconds? Could he really be so distracted and into the act that he doesn't notice someone standing at the door frame?
She was about to turn around and leave. She had seen enough, and she felt as though the space in her chest that held a beating heart might have been empty for that moment.
For a moment, Nick looked up, his eyes glancing at her for a split second. Nothing about his demeanor changed. He seemed unbothered by the tears trickling down his girlfriend's face. There was no regret or guilt on his face. He was like a walking corpse, one that didn't care what pain they inflicted on others. One that didn't value loyalty or trust. He was blatant about his position and acted as though nothing affected her. Could this really be an act? Could this really be a cry for help because maybe Nick Thomas was going through much more than he let the world know? Whatever it was, it could never equal the kind of betrayal he had just put Jessica through. What pained her most was how he didn't even take a second to address her. In most other stories Jessica knew, when a boyfriend was caught cheating, he would always stop to try and explain or at least ask for forgiveness. Nick, however, seemed too careless; he acted as though it didn't really bother him.
He immediately went back to looking at the beautiful girl he had been having sex with. He continued his slow thrusts as sweat trickled down his glowing skin. He seemed extremely occupied by what he was doing, and the girl beneath him made erotic sounds as she responded to his intimate touches.
Jessica's mind went blank. Thoughts and ideas failed to form. His ignorance pained her the most. She was supposed to be there. She was supposed to be in that position. The girl he was supposed to be with. Not her, not that random girl. Her feet were glued to the spot, and she found it difficult to move. Strength had seemingly left her body, and she could do nothing but watch the scene unfold. They only took a few minutes before Nick's grip tightened on the girl's thigh and he was panting. Jessica could tell that he was about to climax, and this made her more irritated. He was the most enthralling and alluring man she had ever known, and seeing him become intimate with another girl broke her heart that day.
Suddenly, her phone rang, snapping her from the trance she seemed to have been in. That little noise attracted the attention of both Nick and the girl he had been with. They looked up, but before either could move, Jessica was already rushing down the stairs and across the road. She picked up her phone and slid her finger across the screen. Bringing the gadget close to her ear, she listened as her cousin began to ramble about how long their flight was.
Avery was Jessica's long-distant cousin who had been arriving in New York for a family visit and perhaps college. She and Jessica had been close for a very long time, but their distance hadn't facilitated their friendship. Jessica remembered how excited she was when her mother told her that her cousin would be staying with them for the next seven months.
She was about to respond when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Jessica turned around to see a completely oblivious Nick standing before her.
"What do you want?" she asked harshly, wiping away the tears that had been flowing as she looked up at Nick.
"You have the courage to stand before me after what I just saw you doing? I thought you were better than this. I thought you were different, Nick," Jessica said to him with so much regret in her tone.
But had that man really come to apologize? Did he really feel regretful for what he had been caught doing? Was he really the man that Jessica knew?
"Could you please just let me talk, Jes?" he asked in the politest way. Jessica almost mistook his voice for an apology. She felt flattered by that little nickname he always gave her. Nick Thomas knew the way to a woman's heart, and for women like Jessica, who are extremely naive and gullible, he didn't need to make much effort before he got what he wanted.
