Kapitel 11: Greed... is a terrible thing 1/2

"Do you miss her?" said Annabeth hesitantly while looking at me, clearly not wanting to ask me about my mother but also wanting to find the answer to something... sigh, well she is pretty curious so whatever.

"Of course I do." I reply while sipping my hot chocolate. "It would be weirder not to miss someone you love I think."

"Then... will you ever go back?" she asked wile looking down, as if afraid of receiving an answer.

"Come on smart girl, I thought your brain was better than that." I reply with a smile while dismissing her concerns. "But the truth is... no. I won't ever return, at least not without you." I continue while patting her head. "So don't worry, because I won't leave you."

Small tears form on the corners of her eyes as she hugs me.

"It's alright, I am here." I continue while comforting her.

"You promise?" she asks, looking up and separating herself from my arms.

"I promise." I reply while smiling. "What about you? Do you miss them?" I ask her while referring to her family.

After being silent for a moment, she looks back at me. "I don't think I do." she says while shaking her head."I left for a reason and I don't want to return, I am also happier right now even if we have to fight to survive, so I guess I don't miss them that much." she continued while grabbing her own hot chocolate and drinking from it.

"Hmmm, well who knows? Maybe we will one day see our families again, like for Christmas or something." I sat with a small smile, causing her to chuckle slightly.

"Yes, I guess it is possible."

Eventually the amount of rain falling diminished and we were able to leave the cafe, returning to our 'home', which right now was a small space under a bridge where we found several trash cans that covered us from the wind, as well as a box we would share to not sleep on the floor.

As we arrived to the bridge, we looked at each other with wide eyes. Both of us have great instincts, most likely because we are demigods, and we felt our bodies telling us to run, the same feeling we had whenever monsters were close.

"I know we should run... but we need to pick up the shield pieces." I say while gritting my teeth.

"It's fine." Annabeth replied. "We have always defeated the monsters, no matter who they are, so as long as we do it together we will be able to take at least some of the things we left there and run away."

"Yes... ughhh I shouldn't have left it there, what was I thinking?!" I muttered frustrated. Usually we carry the important things with us, but the shield had gotten too heavy to have in the backpack, turning it into a huge disadvantage during our fights. "The shield is hidden under the blue trash can, wrapped in old clothes to cover the smell of the metal and keep it hidden." I tell Annabeth.

"I see, well let's see if the monsters are there, they could simply be heading in our direction from somewhere else." Annabeth said in a hopeful tone, though she was aware it was a bit of a stretch since every time our instincts warned us it meant that the monsters where already too close to avoid and right now the only place nearby where monsters could be while still remaining hidden from our view is under the bridge.

"Okey let's take a peek from above the bridge, if it is too dangerous then... we will simply forget about the shield." I said. The shield was something I believed would be necessary for our survival, after all I don't think all the monsters will be defeated by a hammer and a poorly made dagger, but our future survival doesn't matter if we die now, besides we will find something of these unique metal again in the future... we have to.

As we move towards the edge of the bridge, we slowly peek our heads from above until we see the group of monsters currently searching through our 'home'. As soon as we see what we are up against, we stop peeking and distance ourselves from the edge.

"Do you think we can take them?" I ask Annabeth.

"I don't know... we have never fought against something like this before." she says. "Those three draconian women had weapons, so I don't think we can take them head on, though there is never a monster we can take head on, but this is different... they seem actually smart, at least smart enough not to fall for our usual traps." continued explaining Annabeth.

"Indeed... so either we leave right now while we still have a chance or we stay and force ourselves to figure out a good strategy." I say, though all I can think about right now is their weapons... weapons that could be very useful to us. "Besides... did you see their weapons? While it is true they will be much more dangerous than anything we have fought, the reward might be worth it." I say.

"Hmm you are right, with spears like those we could fight against bigger monsters with less risk." Annabeth says, once again entering her thoughtful state while her eyes gained a calculating look. "Okey taking the three of them at the same time would be too much, how about splitting them? We could make them follow us into the building three locks away and split then."

"I see... it is indeed a good idea. We split at the entrance and reunite in the seventh floor, that would be good." I continue while making drawings on the floor with the basics of the plan. "I can loose the ones that follow me and we simply face the ones that follow you, they will most likely divide into one pair and the other one will be alone, so we take on whichever group follows after you and then deal with the other one."

"Yes."
