After listening, Charlotte Cooper stared blankly at Mrs. Mason since she couldn't understand what she was insinuating.
Charlotte said, "Mrs. Mason, why are you saying this? I just came to your house to stay for one night. Please don't overthink, okay?"
After hearing this, Mrs. Mason glared angrily at Charlotte.
Charlotte thought to herself: This is so ridiculous. If it weren't for Henry Russell asking me to come here, I wouldn't have come at all. Now they're accusing me of having ulterior motives—it's just too much. I know you've always thought I liked Hugo, but I don't. I'm just grateful for the help he and Henry have given me in the past.
Henry Russell is the only person Charlotte loves, and she could never like anyone else, not now and not ever.
Charlotte glanced at Mrs. Mason and stopped talking. She didn't want to argue with her, especially since she needed to spend the night at their house. It was better to act as if nothing had happened and avoid Mrs. Mason's gaze.
