Kapitel 22: Chapter 22

Adela's screams forced their way into the house through the open windows and spread everywhere.

The maids who were absorbed in their work until then got greatly unrested.

"Something happened," one of the maids said and looked at each other terrified. They quit their jobs immediately and ran downstairs to see creating a tramp at the house's stairs.

The same thing happened with Margaret and Emily. They jumped out of their chairs, alarmed.

"Was that Adela's voice?" said Margaret with widened eyes filled with terror.

"Yes, mother. I recognized her too. Oh, my God, something terrible must have happened. I'm going to see." Emily left running with her heart pounding with concern.

"Wait, my child, I'm coming too," Margaret shouted behind her, following her with swift steps. But Emily had already climbed down the stairs and rushed out into the yard running. Her gaze fell to Adela, lying on the ground, and immediately raced to her shouting her name. "Adelaaa."

Emily approached her. Adela was lying face down on the ground. At first, Emily was confused with the clothes of the maid that Adela wore, but she was sure she was her sister. Emily had recognized Adela's hair. The little white hat had left Adela's head and crawled on the ground further.

With tears in her eyes, Emily knelt beside her and put her trembling hand on Adela's shoulder; using slow movements turned her to see her face.

"ADELAAAA... " Adela's face had the similar look of a dead person. That was what Emily believed and screamed her sister's name in pain.

She started crying loudly. The maids had gathered around them and bowed their heads to the great disaster that the mansion had met.

Margaret came and stood near to Emily. She looked at her daughter's white face. Her face, a mask of terror and pain. The blow to the forehead caused by her falling to the ground was bleeding badly. With widened eyes, she cupped her cheeks with her hands and screamed, "ADELAAA."

Margaret lost consciousness. But, fortunately, some of the maids managed to grab her, saving her from the crash with the ground.

Emily looked at Adela and her mother with a lost look. She didn't know what to do.

"Emily, what happened, my child?"

Mistress Nina and Agnes had just arrived home. They noticed they were all gathered out to the yard, and it wasn't difficult to understand that something had happened. As soon as Emily saw Mistress Nina and Agnes coming near her, she felt relieved.

"Thank God you came. It's Adela Mistress Nina. She is dead. And the mother fainted. "

"What are you saying my child? Dead? What are you looking at?" She addressed the maids. "Quickly, someone to go and call the doctor. Hurry up!" She screamed, and immediately one of them hurried to get the doctor.

Agnes, with tears in her eyes, knelt next to Adela. With tender movements, she wiped the blood from her face with the tip of her sleeve.

She stroked Adela's dirty hair feeling her heart torn in pieces. Saddened and with tears streaming down her face, she rested her head on Adela's chest. After a while, she cried in a shrill voice.

"She is alive! She is alive! I heard her heart beating! Her heart is beating!" She got up, started jumping, and laughed with joy. "Adela is alive! Thank you, God."

"She must probably lose consciousness," Mistress Nina declared, "but we don't know if she was hit before she fainted or when she fell to the ground. The doctor must come as soon as possible."

"He is here," exclaimed one of the maids, pointing to the side where she had seen the doctor coming almost running.

"Here doctor, here!" Emily shouted at him, "Adela needs you more" she moved aside to make room for the doctor.

In the meantime, Margaret, with the care of Mrs. Nina, had begun to come together.

"Adela? Where is my child?" her voice sounded broken, almost a whisper.

"She is here mother. The doctor came to examine her ".

"That means, she hasn't died."

"No, mother! She has just fainted."

"Thank God!" Margaret said, relieved, resting one hand on her heart and the other on her forehead.

"Come, ladies. Help me carry Adela to her room," said the doctor.

Carefully, they laid Adela on her bed.

"Now you can go back to your duties," Margaret told the maids, and they left in a hurry.

Next to Adela were her mother, her sister, and Agnes. The doctor examined the head injury and pronounced that it wasn't serious. But it would be necessary to do some stitches.

First, he treated it by cleaning the wound very well and then followed the stitches with a needle that first sterilized it in a candle flame. When he finished with the stitches, he pulled out of his bag a glass bottle. He opened it and put it under Adela's nose. Soon they saw her eyelids flutter and her eyes open slowly. Adela looked at them all one by one, expressionless. With an empty look.

"Adela, my child. How do you feel?" she heard her mother entreating her.

Margaret approached the bed, sat down next to her taking her hands in hers.

"Tell me, Adela. How do you feel?" she repeated tenderly. She caressed her hair and face, but no response came from Adela. And she always had the same empty look. Margaret began to panic and looked at the doctor. "What's up doctor?"

"I can't say for sure, but it seems to me that she has suffered a violent upheaval. Maybe with something she heard or something she saw. You have no clue of what may happened?"

"I am afraid I don't doctor. Will she recover? "

"Yes. But it will take some time. "

"How much time, doctor?"

"Unfortunately I don't know that."

"But, she will do recover, doesn't she?"

"Yes, I'm sure she will."

"Okay, doctor, thank you for coming. Come with me. I will pay you and escort you to the exit."

Margaret and the doctor went out, and Emily with Agnes was left alone. Emily stared at Agnes.

"Do you know anything about all this Agnes?" the girl was surprised by the question. She didn't answer, only bowed her head.

"Tell me, Agnes? What do you know? Why is my sister dressed as a maid?"

"No, I can't tell you."

"Agnes, tell me. Only then will I understand what happened to my sister and maybe I can help her."

"No one can help her," Agnes said with tears in her eyes, got up abruptly, and ran away from the room. She ran out into the yard and headed to the stables.

"Stefan, Stefan!" She shouted several times, but no answer came.

She went in and looked for him but nothing. He was nowhere. She came out of the stable, and she saw a worker passing by at that moment. She ran close to him.

"Hey you, wait," she yelled. The worker stopped, and when Agnes approached, she asked him breathlessly.

"Do you know where Stefan is?"

The worker scratched his head thoughtfully. "It seems to me that I saw him leaving with a girl with black hair."

"Did they go somewhere for work? Do you know when they will return?"

"I think you haven't understand. I don't think they will return. I saw them leaving passing through the orchard. They were carrying their things too."

"You mean they just left the house?"

"It seems so."

"Is it possible that they dared to do such a thing?" she asked in surprise.

"What can I tell you, girl? I don't know for sure. I may be wrong."

"Okay. Thank you for the information."

The worker left, and Agnes wondered what the hell happened with the magic potion and who was the girl with the black hair?

She entered the kitchen skeptically.

"Agnes, what happened to Adela?" asked the mistress-Nina. Agnes didn't even hear her. She was lost in her unanswered questions.

"Mrs. Nina, do we have any girl working here with black hair? I can't remember clearly."

"Yes, of course we do. It's Francesca."

"Who?!" Agnes was left with her mouth open.

"Francesca. Why are you asking?"

Agnes ignored Mistress's Nina question and ran to Francesca's dormitory.

It was true! All her belongings were missing.

Agnes couldn't believe her eyes. What the hell was going on here? What happened? Was Francesca the girl who ran away with Stefan, or was it just a coincidence?

She couldn't understand what had gone wrong. Because it was evident that things didn't turn out as they expected. Adela was the one who had to run away with Stefan. What happened, and she lost her place next to him?

What happened, and how did Adela end up unconscious on the ground?

So many questions and no answers; Agnes held her head with both hands to not explode.

She couldn't come to an end. She would have to wait until she recovered. Only Adela could make her clear, but for now, it was impossible.

She decided to return home when Sophie, a maid of the house, suddenly appeared in front of her. She was furious, and she was looking at Agnes with eyes that shone wildly.
