I felt ashamed of my rant and walked away. I shined my light on the wall and sniffed it. A bright blue light shimmered against the wall.
Ah. It's just like the tower.
I fiddled through my pockets before finding a small chunk of chalk. I hummed, "Good thing I thought to bring this."
I turned back to the wall and began to draw over the runes to change them.
Cyrus watched me intently, "I've always wondered, how do you know how to do that? Did you take classes?"
"My Uncle taught me."
"Chief Gonza?"
I shook my head, "No. Not him."
I finished editing the runes along the wall and rubbed the sweat from my forehead. I put my chalk away and put my hand against the wall. I forced a wave of mana to leave out of my hand and onto the magic circle which erupted in a blinding light before dimming back down. A crack traveled across the wall and revealed a hidden door.
"Well, I got the door back… Do you think the wolves are still outside?"
Cyrus stepped over to the door and listened intently. He shook his head, "Doesn't sound like it. I will open the door and-"
I promptly walked over and shoved it open, "No. Allow me. If I die, it will save me from this embarrassment."
Cyrus tried to stop me, but I was already through the door.
I paused, "Huh."
"What is it?" He walked out behind me, "Oh."
In front of us were the entire Royal guards and M.I.B officials on the beach clearly in a moment of crisis. Chief Gonza caught sight of us and rushed over, "Reika!!"
I waved, "Hello-"
He pulled me into a tight embrace, "I WAS SO WORRIED!"
I tapped his arm, "What's going on?"
Chief Gonza pulled away, "We don't know ourselves. A sudden fog rolled in and it is covering the entire island."
Cyrus raised his eyebrows in surprise, "That wasn't part of the test?"
Chief Gonza shook his head, "It wasn't. And to make everything worse, we aren't able to get to any of the contestants. The magic circles we made to transport people to the island suddenly malfunctioned. There seems to be a barrier around the island preventing our entry, but we can't figure out how to break it. We managed to disperse the fog around the island, but it's still inside where all the contestants are."
I let out a sigh, "Let me take a look."
Chief Gonza shouted after me, "Ah! Wait! Reika it isn't safe!"
I ignored him and walked over to the barrier. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I reopened my eyes, I could see a very long and intricate design on the ground.
Cyrus walked over to me, "Well?"
I almost couldn't believe it, "This entire island is a magic circle."
Chief Gonza asked, "What does that mean?"
I looked up into the sky, "It means that someone managed to carve out an entire magic circle in the ground to turn the entire island into a barrier."
Chief Gonza furrowed his eyebrows, "But how is that possible?! Those in charge of the island haven't reported anything strange. There's no way someone could carve an entire magic circle into the island without us knowing."
"That's exactly why no one did." I pushed aside some sand revealing a carving in the rocks, some of which was covered by vegetation. I motioned to it, "Whoever did this, did it centuries ago. It must have been inactive until today when something happened and reactivated it."
Cyrus looked at the barrier, "What activated it?"
I shrugged as I brushed the sand off my hands, "Who knows? Maybe someone stumbled across something and accidentally set it off."
Chief Gonza scratched his head, "So how can we turn it off?"
"Usually I would be able to break it without any trouble, but…" I looked down the beach, "This is huge."
I summoned my ice chunk and flew above the barrier. As I stared down at the island, I could vaguely see the lines making up the circle.
Suddenly, I understood.
I floated back down and landed, "I know exactly how to solve it."
Chief Gonza grew excited, "How so?"
"It's actually a very simple magic circle- one of the more basic ones. It was activated because the island thought it was under attack. If you get rid of the fog on the inside, the barrier will disappear."
Chief Gonza let out a sigh, "That would work, but none of us can go inside the barrier. Only you and Prince Cyrus were able to leave. No one else has come through and none of us can go inside."
"Really?" I put my hand through the barrier and found that it went through without issue, "Whoa. That's crazy."
I grabbed Cyrus's hand and pushed it through the barrier, and it too went through. When I grabbed Chief Gonza and tried to put his hand through, the barrier hardened and his hand was pushed against it as if it was solid.
My eyes widened, "That's wild! I wonder why it's acting like that."
Chief Gonza pulled his hand back and massaged it, "There's still a lot about magic circles we don't understand. Although if I had to guess-"
I jumped on my ice chunk and flew up.
Chief Gonza shouted after me, "Wait! Where are you going!?"
I waved him off, "To solve the problem."
I ignored Chief Gonza and Cyrus's concerns and flew into the barrier. I passed through it effortlessly and found myself in the middle of the fog once more. I raised my ice chunk in the air and pulled out my wand. I hummed to myself, "How do you get rid of fog? A hurricane?"
Eh.
Sounds right.
I forced my mana into the wand and gave it a twirl. At the edge of my tip, air rushed forward creating a large hurricane. I watched as it consumed the fog and started traveling to the edge of the island where the barrier opened up and let it through. The barrier acknowledged that the danger had passed and shut down, returning back to normal.
I lowered my ice chunk back to where Chief Gonza and Cyrus were waiting. I grinned at them, "Problem solved. The barrier is down now."
Cyrus and Chief Gonza both watched as the hurricane traveled across the water getting stronger as it moved.
Cyrus pursed his lips, "Yeah, but now there's a hurricane."
I turned to watch it travel across the land, swallowing up everything.
I gulped, "Oh… Yeah… That's less than ideal."
