Mere months ago, General Guo Quan had stood in Weiyang Hall watching as Grand Protector Li was stripped of his title and dragged to the imperial dungeons, serving as a warning signal to the nobles that the young man they'd thought they controlled in the palm of their hands had grown into a voracious dragon, guarding its pearl (1) within its ferocious maw jealously.
Guo Quan was no stranger to the concept of death. He could deal it to others on the battlefield, he'd seen his soldiers cut down before his very eyes.
But he was starting to realise just how much he feared for his own life.

Queeniecat (1) Pearl in a dragon’s mouth: a common artistic motif, one version of the legend behind it says that a boy who was drawing water from the river discovered a pearl within. when this pearl was placed in the rice bucket, it made the rice grow in abundance. When it was put into a money box, it made the money multiply on its own. A rich man heard about the rumours of the pearl and hired some thugs to steal it from the boy. In his panic, he put the pearl in his mouth to hide it but accidentally swallowed it. To wash it down, he rushed to the river and drank from its waters. As he did so, he sprouted horns and scales and morphed into a dragon.
(2) Northwest wind: the harsh winter wind that comes in from the direction of Siberia.
(3) A turtle with its head hiding in its shell: figurative speech; a coward
(4) The sky was high and the emperor was far: an idiom that means remote places beyond the reach of the governing administration.
(5) Mianguan: the official ceremonial headdress of the emperor, with 12 strings of beads dangling from the front and the back. Pre-Sui/Tang dynasty, there were records of it being used during morning court. After, it became reserved for important rituals and it was rare for an emperor to dress with such formality for court affairs. I…like the look so we’re using it LOL ^^;;
