Kapitel 28: Chapter 28: Too Little, Too Late

"Shaye, you're on a new shift," the barrel of a guard commands, not even looking at me as he reads out from his notebook. "For the next few weeks, you'll be delivering food to the inmates underground. The last girl fell sick."

My stomach drops right through me. After what I went through today, I don't want to be anywhere near prisoners worse than the monsters I just encountered.

"There must be a mistake," I say, glancing over at Crymson who's mopping the floor. She shakes her head at me to keep my mouth shut.

The guard tilts his head back, eyes narrowing. "I didn't ask for your opinion. Go to the kitchen and collect the food trolley. Your shift starts now!"

I jerk forward on shaky legs and follow the guard down to the kitchen. All of me wants to ask the guard if anyone will be working with me, but the way he glares at me, I don't want to even ask him anything. Just get this over and done with.
