With its nature being unclear, the only fact Zora managed to gather about this sphere of void, is that it is part of the human genome in this world, making it a most likely essential part of the human body. But he had no idea in what way it was essential, or useful at that. He tried interacting with his parent's sphere, but it repelled his mana tendrils, as if he tried to connect two magnets with the same poles facing each other. He didn't want to force a connection, so he drew back with all the new information in mind.
The weeks kept going in relative harmony, the family was well off, with only 3 kids they could afford to indulge their little glutton most of the times, but usually they were left with no money at the end of every week. But nobody minded that. If the kid wanted to eat, then let him eat as much as he wants.
That is, until something came up.
One day, when Zora was already around 5 months of age, he was already left alone together with the other kids to play however he wanted. Nothing ever happened, and the parents felt like their newest kid is wiser than his peers, he can be given a bit more freedom. But no matter what, at least one of the older children must've been around him at all times.
Given the lack of adult surveillance, one day an accident happened. The kids were playing together, and Tilly was too enthusiastic about running around with Zora. She always had too much energy, and now this would turn out to be a problem, as she never really learnt to control her impulses and over-active personality. She somehow dropped Zora. Its not something unheard of and accidents like these can happen to anyone, it was an honest mistake, but the consequences were unforeseeable.
Its usual for kids to get hurt, whatever they do. Its kind of their job, to explore, to move around, try out stuff, and inevitably get hurt in the end. The same happened now. Zora hit his arm pretty bad, it was bleeding, but nothing out of the ordinary. Tilly picked him up right away and ran crying to their parents. Everything was normal, until even after 10 minutes the bleeding wouldn't stop. Zora started panicking seeing his blood isn't clotting. At the 20 minutes mark, seeing his blood keep staining the cloth that his arms got wrapped up in, his parents were freaking out so bad, the whole house was filled with their deafening voice.
By the time the 3rd bandage had to be changed on him Lilly was on fire and started packing to rush into the village from their farm with Zora on her back to see the village healer. They lived only a few kilometres away from the village, but moving a bleeding baby all that way was a bit risky. But there was nothing else that could be done.
Lilly packed everything in a rush, changed Zora's bandage, then tore a cloth in half and wrapped it around the base of his arm very tightly, trying to squeeze the veins so the flow of blood stops entirely. Understandably neither of the parents knew proper first-aid. Maybe no one did in this world, and considering that they are simple farmers its a miracle Lilly knew this much. Even with that, she applied the tourniquet at a bad angle.
The bleeding was slowed down this way, but not entirely stopped, and it was quite painful for the kid. So she had to make haste. She told Ezakiel to stay with the other kids, they couldn't just leave them there. The husband nodded and started comforting Tilly, the self-proclaimed perpetrator. He would never dare object to whatever his wife decides on in such critical moments.
Lilly finally finished packing then rushed out to the road and started walking to the village in a brisk pace. It wasn't too far away, but not close enough either to run the whole way. Instead of running a short while, then move tiredly, she wanted to keep an agreeable speed all the way.
It was the first time Zora ever left the house, but he didn't have much time to gaze around, as he was doing his own part in trying to not die. He used his inner mana control to squeeze the sides of the injury so it bleeds less than it actually could. He had no idea how far away the village actually was. By that time he understood most of what his parents were talking about, and if not, he could guess the rest, but the exact details still eluded him. Thus he had to make sure his reserves last as long as possible. This used up most of his focus.
It took around a hour and a half for them to reach the village, even with Lilly's relentless fast paced movement. They had to stop twice to change the bandage and tighten the makeshift tourniquet, which was already showing too much tear.
They rushed inside the village walls, only telling the guard and a few other curious onlookers of what happened. Everyone knew who they are, so they weren't stopped at least. Lilly rushed straight to the healer's house. There she tore the door open without even knocking and started asking for the healer right away in a not too friendly tone. There were already others in there waiting for treatment, but seeing Lilly's panicked and flushed face, they jumped aside and let her move inside.
The healer's house was actually quite big, it was almost twice the size of their own. It even had a second floor. It seemed to Zora that being the only healer around is a good source of money.
From the main room, to which the hall was connected to, a slightly old, around 1.7 meters tall man walked out of, his short hair was already gray, along with his mustache, but both of those were neatly kept in order. He had a stern look and scrawny build. This was Olak, the village healer and spiritualist.
"What seems to be the problem? There are other patients too, you have to wait in line like everybody else!" he said right away as he showed up in the room. He was used to people feeling like their case was worse than the others', so they should be in a better position in the queue, than what the order of arrival dictated. Lilly on the other hand looked at him like she saw a ghost and had to run her leg off just to find some rest of whatever curse she was afflicted to. Seeing this he frowned, but stopped with the further remarks.
"Please, Olak you have to help us. My kid got hurt in an accident and his bleeding won't stop! I rushed with him here right away, but he was bleeding all the way and now I have no idea what to do... I tried everything, but it won't stop, please heal him with your magical powers!" she begged, while she quickly put her stuff down and grabbed Zora to show him to the healer.
"Okay, okay, this sounds pretty urgent, bring the kid, put him down on that table." Olak said as he lead the mother and her child further into the building and pointed at a small desk on the side.
By that time Zora was starting to lose it. His skin was getting grayer, he was losing focus and was about to black out due to the blood loss. He could only count on whatever healer this was to get his job done. He had amazing luck in this world. He didn't want to die so soon.
