Society is more patriarchal, gender roles are divided very strictly, which in my opinion is bad policy. One has only to look at how in the series, the female benders of the Southern Tribe sank the ships of the people of fire on a par with men, or even more of them. Also based on the series, the most powerful water benders there were mostly women.
There were records of people who were able to witness with their own eyes, just the desperate determination of the warriors and benders of the south Pole in defending their city. Yes, there was a whole city that was not much smaller than the Northern Capital. As described here, in order for the warriors of the people of fire to go at least a little further, they had to sacrifice almost three times as many people as the people of water. It was a great loss to the proud nation of fire, which, having behind its back the victorious processions of its army across almost the whole world, loses to the pathetic aborigines who still live in tribes, they did not skimp on resources, just crushed them with an endless stream of people and cars.
And such intense raids stopped only recently, when the people of fire were sure that there was not a single water bender left at the south pole, and sometimes different ships came there to check, as it was when Katara and Sokki's mother were taken away.
What was the situation at the North Pole?
The Northerners were able to withstand a number of attacks by the Fire People thanks to the more severe weather and the erected wall. But do not exclude several other points. In the north, there were no resources needed by the people of fire, and even if there were, the price of taking the city was too high. At that time, the People of Fire could be said to be at war with all nations at once, an attack by sea was carried out on both the Southern and Northern Tribes of Water, wars were waged on land with the People of the Earth, and some of the troops went to the Temples of the Air. The people of the North were able to withstand many attacks, the last capture attempt was about 70 years ago. At that time, the Leader and the Council realized the situation in which, waging a war from defense on their own territory, they still lost many lives, and do not have enough strength for any serious retaliatory attack.
And so a decision was made in which contacts with the outside world were almost completely cut off, in the hope that if we did not stick out, then they would not touch us either. Of course, it was written differently there, but those who can read between the lines will understand that the people essentially lost the war, but at the same time retained their independence, since they were no longer needed by the people of fire.
Honestly, it's all sad. Even if there were serious reasons for the beginning of the expansion by the people of fire, then in the future it became like just a strange idea, in which the motto is appropriate – I will kill everyone alone.
But in order not to be unfounded, I will not speculate on purely my own conjectures until I understand all the nuances for sure. But being a resident of the water tribe, I am already a priori an enemy for the people of fire, but you need to understand that it's one thing to kill warriors and fire mages who serve in the army and are ready to kill and be killed themselves, with ordinary residents who maybe just want a quiet life. All kinds of maniacs, murderers and similar personalities in any scenario should be wiped off the face of the earth, this is not even discussed. Of course, I'm not going to purposefully look for such, and I won't kill without fully understanding the case either, but with 100% confidence I can and will stop this.
Being a spirit, I was not much tormented by the moral side of killing similar spirits, it seems that being buried under various problems and losing my mind from bending and the new world, it somehow passed me by. But now, it's worth starting to collect information about the world around me, of course I will try to adhere to my moral compass, which will help me to remain human in any situation. Yes, I know that this is a different world and there may be other mores here, and the time of war can be said not for such right people, but to be a person in my understanding is to remain them always, I will hope that this world is closer to the one shown in the cartoon, where there was not so much cruelty.
