Eleanora was not a woman to be messed with and yet again, I was placed next to someone in a position of power. With the excitement of the tourney behind us, I finally turned around to see Carlisle sitting on his horse. My heart thudded with equal parts anticipation and worry. I felt as though I would seize on the ground.
Sitting down, I heard the ringing in my ears before I could hear his name announced. His face was stoic and unmoving as he brought his horse to my new spot next to Eleanora.
"Please bless me, Irene."
He spoke softly as Eleanora handed me something. I was surprised. It was a crown of lilies. My favorite flower. I carefully tossed it upon his lance and our eyes met. I wondered if he wanted to say something but I told him once more, "Be careful."
Did I want to admit that if he was hurt that I would also be in pain? I didn't like how interconnected I was with him. Where had this codependency happened?
