Kapitel 171: moving up the floors

As I watched the battles of everyone in our group I had picked up on their individual styles and ways of using magic.

Abby was forceful, a force of nature, she used high profile spells that caused a lot of destruction to the field. They also tend to utterly destroy her opponent. I have long come to realise a Wizard's way of using magic stems from their personalities. Which in this case, perfectly correlated. She tended to stay far away and act as artillery per se. bombarding her opponents with enough firepower that it becomes overwhelming.

Percival was much tamer, his movements were refined, with no wasted actions or motions. He looked like a maestro creating a beautiful symphony of noise. His spells were quick and deadly. Using his environment and his knowledge to create an artistic piece that's very pleasing to the eye. He was a medium-range attacker. Not too far away, but not too close. His skills acted like surgical knives cutting in and out of the beasts.

Fred was the complete opposite, a beastly aura would cling to his body as he fought. His combat style was up close and personal often dodging by very small margins and using the openings to punish his opponent. He used a lot of earth magic creating stone pillars to destabilise his opponents, creating walls to obstruct attacks and spikes to impale them. The more I watched the more interested I became. He would be a very good battle mage. There was very high potential there.

Jenna was calculative. Although she was clunky and rigid when using her spells, she was accurate and concise. She didn't waste time and targeted the weaknesses. If they weren't obvious, she would create an opening by feigning an opening of her own. She seemed like a machine as her facial expressions never changed. I really started to doubt that she didn't like to battle.

Robert was incredibly reserved, he seemed to make sure not to hurt the monster as much as possible and preferred to restrain and or immobilise his opponent whenever possible. He used freezing spells, ropes, vines and other types of nonlethal methods which seemed to work on most creatures. But the small and quick beasts were his counter and they punished him heavily for his actions. But he still managed to come out on top.

John was the odd one out. He was not exactly talented or good at battling. He would run around like his ass was on fire and use cheap methods to try and beat the beast. Often times failing but eventually coming out on top. There was really nothing much more to observe from him sadly.

Through all of this, I realised that the thunderbird house overlapped with the other three houses. The only commonality between everyone was their passion for adventuring and exploring the unknown.

This continued onto the third and fourth floors. Jenna, Robert and John weren't able to beat the fourth floor and failed. Jenna, because her wand movements and spell casting were too slow. Her movement speed was also almost non-existent. Which ended up costing her a few severe hits. She would have had to go to the hospital if I wasn't here. But I quickly fixed her up and she was good as new.

Robert because he was too soft. Many times he could have won if he used lethal methods. But that was his personal choice and not something that should be looked down on.

And John because, well, he was simply incompetent. I was really surprised he made it as far as the fourth floor, to be honest.

On the other hand, Abby, Percival, Fred and I were able to beat the fourth floor after much effort. We had long gone over the class time, but this was the only class we had today for this exact reason. So there was nothing to worry about.

Abby struggled a lot on the fourth floor because her spells couldn't keep up with the increasing dangerousness of the beasts. Percival was also struggling but did a bit better. Then there was Fred, he seemed to never run out of energy, over and over he fought with the beasts often employing a strategy of leaving himself open to bait the beasts.

Something that worked for the most part. But he did sustain some heavy injuries that I also had to heal. Sadly, those tricks wouldn't work forever since the higher we went the smart the beasts became.

We were already going up against mountain trolls, river anacondas, golden eagles and giant sky owls. It was getting very dangerous. There were still 3 levels to go. According to Jenna, on the fifth level, beasts such as the Zouwu, water dragons, bullet bats, something called 'the shade', acromantulas and massive moles that dug underground would appear.

On the sixth level, there were dragons, river trolls, ogres, desert apes, river swallowing toads and the likes. It was incredibly dangerous because all of them had almost human-level intelligence.

And finally, on the seventh level, vampires, Veela's, trench, titans, Wampus cat, Thunderbirds and so on came out. all of them were something that was suicide for students. They were existences that are immensely powerful. The only reason the school has one of each, was because they were either found injured, were already imprisoned and were transferred to the school or they made a pact with the school for their own survival. After all, they were all incredibly smart creatures with human-level intelligence.

I was itching to go to the top and fight them. I initially thought about absorbing their abilities, but Drak told me that it wasn't possible through their copies. So I had to go to the actual place where they housed these creatures. It initially posed a problem, but then I thought about the benefits I had yet to ask for from the headmistress and it all fixed itself out.
