Daisy and I sit in front of a campfire. She sits uncomfortably across the fire and opposite of me. It's night now. Best to wait til morning to travel. Rest is needed as much as anything else worthwhile if not more so. As far as our conversation earlier about her sister I had asked her to explain to me what happened and how she knows this Red Queen. She has yet to say anything. I guess it's hard for her to talk about the experience. I understand how that feels. I have things I can't talk about either. Things I'd rather forget. Then again mistakes and failures makes us who we are. It allows us to be better. To learn from those very things that caused us pain. Consequences are terrible and yet we can choose to learn from them or burn in the the flames that they ignite in our hearts.
"Don't worry about it Daisy." I say gently smiling. "When you're comfortable just explain to me later. I'll take your request." Oh by the way. Lace prefers to be called Daisy. So that's what I'll call her for now on. She seems so whimsical and full of wonder. But now I can see she's actually suffering. Guess we all have things that we prefer aren't seen.
"Thank you Red." She smiles back. I nod and stand up.
"I'll look for some food for us to eat. Just stay here. Relax and please don't wonder off." I turn and walk deeper into the forest.
"Ay captain " she says in a cheerful voice. Followed by a giggle.
I need some time alone. I don't exactly know what's going on. It's not that it's overwhelming. I mean it is. But this entire situation is just bonkers.
I hunt some an elk and find some berries. I return to camp to find Daisy asleep. I cut and clean the elk and I manage to cook up some nice meat over the spit. I wait for the meat to cook. I decide it's a good time to continue on with my book. A man with two souls. The book dictates the two souls resides in a man and each fight for dominance. It's quite strange but interesting. I actually enjoy it. Plus it helps pass the time.
After awhile later I wake up Lace so she can eat. We don't really talk. Daisy mentions a few things about being a heavy sleeper though nothing really of importance I guess. After that it becomes quiet. The forest is quiet. Not a sound to be heard other than the crackling of the flames. Actually now that I think about it it's been quiet for a while. No sounds or anything since I came back from hunting. Did I scare away the wildlife? Possibly but something in me is saying that something is off.
I decide to walk around the area just to make sure everything is secure but that's when I get a sense of danger from my left. Something flies in my direction. I move out of the way of a sharp like object. And then another. Daisy looks up surprised. I pull out Kuro and deflect the rest. And I catch the last. A purple looking dagger.
"You're as quick as reported " a nameless voice speaks up from the darkness. I look towards it which resided in a tree. I see glowing green eyes. Someone jumps down. A man with a sleek frame wearing purple and dark green latex. Ugh. His skin is pale and he wears goggles that glow a swamp green color. He looks to be well aged. Perhaps in his forties.
He bows saying"i am Durman. It is a pleasure Red Vermilion."
"Your outfit is quite daring" Daisy speaks up. We both look at her.
"Why thank you madam." Durman thanks her with a sly smile. "But alas I must take you away with me."
"Daisy move!" I yell as I pull out Kali and fire a black round. He flips out of the way of it. But I keep firing. He manage to block every shot using a small blades.
"You seem to have the wrong idea about me Mr. Vermilion." Durman states while circling me. Daisy runs to my side. Stupid girl. She doesn't understand.
"I'm not here for you but I will gladly paint the forest with your innards." Hmm my innards huh. I observe my opponent more closely. And that's when I notice it. A brand on his outfit. It's a symbol of a veteran soldier. From the war. Shit.
"Daisy get the hell out of here!" I yell at her but I notice he's gone. I quickly turn and see him behind Daisy. I slam into him and carry him off towards a river stream out near the campsite. He laughs maniacally. Slams his elbows into my back. Knees me in in the jaw and kick me towards the river stream. I fall rolling over. As I recover and look up I see 12 blades coming in my direction. I deflect most of them using Kuro and as I get up to attack I feel myself being penetrated from behind. Blades stab into my back. Damn. He can control the direction of his blades. The pain is severe. It seems to have pierced deep into my armor. I nearly stumble but I recover. Not fast enough though because he does a roundhouse kick to my face spinning me around and kicks me in the back deepening the blade. I scream in pain. But I stumble away firing Kali he runs around the black rounds and pulls out a dagger. I Hold Kuro tightly and our blades clash. I feel weaker. Why? Blood loss? No this feeling. "Yes Poison" Durman smiles and his eyes stretch as if to show psychotic glee. Funny how we were just eating a second ago.
I swing my sword and proceed to throw a kick to get distance but it's no use. He dances around me throwing daggers into my armor and piercing my flesh and I swing ever so frantically to escape the onslaught of attacks but this must be his specialty. I can barely think. Has the poison reached my bloodstream already? I need to use my aura to purge it. As quickly as I can before I can't.
"Ahh! " I roar as white flames explode around me causing an area affect to knock him back. I began to use my flames to purge the poison in me but then I'm shot. A force so strong it propels me into the river.
"Extinguished! Hahahaha!" I hear the psychotic laugh as I fall.
"Red!" Daisy screams. And I descend into the water.
That was sloppy. I think to myself. To get ambushed and knocked down like this. But hes a veteran from the war. More than likely a merc for hire currently. I heard the war drive a lot of them mad. Honestly it explains the behavior but I can't think about that right now. I can't feel my body other than the excruciating pain I'm in. My flames have not gone out yet so I still have time but I'm gonna drown soon if I don't hurry! Dammit! My luck just gets worse and worse. I guess this is a fitting end for me though.
I see a light. It's coming towards me. An angel? Damn. Dead already huh. Oh well. Now I can join my friends. Hopefully they won't be too mad…
Huh wait. A familiar white dress comes into view.
Daisy!?
It's her. She pulls me out of the river. I caugh up water and gasp for air.
"I think that was quite a splendid rescue indeed don't you think?" She smiles at me. I smile back without thinking.
Grateful I say "thank you Daisy but what about-"
"Me" Durman is already in us. I can barely move. But before I know it Daisy's umbrella unfolds pushing Durman to the side and she rushes him throwing an acrobatic kick his way. He dodged but she's fast. Like really fast and graceful. A somersault into a downward kick into his abdomen caused his smile to turn into a pained frown. Impressive. She fires off an explosive dust round and knocks him flying. She runs over and helps me up.
"Come on Red." She smiles. "It's best we make some distance."
"Definitely" I agreed. But I feel danger from where Durman was. I turn and see him jump high into the air.
"Enough of the games!" He yells "It's time to die" he puts a mask on and green like mist spreads from his body like an explosion.
"Oh no!" Daisy screams. I hold onto her to shield her from it. But I immediately feel sluggish and pained.
"What is…" I try to mouth but I can't seem to focus.
"Do not fear Red Vermilion " Durman's voice says as I see a glowing green silhouette. "Your death is imminent. You are in breathing it in as we speak."
Oh…no. Poison. This must be his semblance.
"Very few see my semblance and live to tell the tale. Welcome to my toxic playground "
My face relaxes in a depressed state. I can't really move but…
My flames erupt around Daisy and I.
"Daisy as long as I'm alive my flames will burn. They don't work like regular flames. I'm currently pushing away the poison." She looks at me. A serious look. One that almost makes her look like a different person. I continue "when u see an opening make a run for it. And keep going."
She just looks into my eyes and after a long look she stands and walks into the poison mist.
"Red. You can't die." She states with her back to me. "You still have to save my sister remember silly" she looks back and I see the smile on her face return.
"Daisy this is no time for that obviously I can't make it out of this situation! So just go!"
"I will not!" For the first time she asserted her voice. She sounds different. I'm shocked almost. "You're my friend now and I will protect you."
"But who will protect you my dear girl" Durman comes closer. I want to move but I can't.
And while Daisy is away from my flames the poison will slowly kill her.
"Enough Durman!" Daisy exclaims. "You face me now! Lace Daisy Wonder. Let's put on a show shall we."
