James wore a look of understanding when I glanced to where he watched from the porch.

As there had been word of two more recent raids in the vicinity of Fort Ramson, the next morning I decided to forego the road and crosscut the countryside on our way to the Mead. I deliberately delayed an early beginning to the trip to ensure we remained on the plains overnight. I wanted to star-camp with the two youngsters.

We began our journey in high spirits, but it was not long before an uneasiness settled over me. Within a mile, the skin on my back was puckering. I pulled to a halt and scanned the horizon in all directions while the boys continued down the path. After seeing nothing of concern, I decided I was turning into a worrisome old woman and urged Patch forward to catch up with the chattering boys. How did they find so much to talk about?
