Menchaca insisted that the meeting be held at his place, but Carlos and Beto would not budge. It was going to be at their place, and he would want to be there. Menchaca seemed pleased on the phone, which gave them both the impression that he believed they planned to sell.
They’d asked Virginia, Homer, and Eugenio to be there as witnesses. Though multiple copies had been made of the documents and stored throughout the house, they weren’t going to take any chances.
Menchaca and his men arrived fifteen minutes late: a power play that Carlos was all too familiar with. A bunch of the head anchors and producers would do the same with him. He was just surprised none of the men, or Menchaca himself, paused a beat at the doorway before entering to really exert their power. Carlos wasn’t familiar with anyone in the room—except for Cortez. He smiled over at Carlos, giving him a wink. Eugenio caught it as well and shot him a look which made Cortez back off.
