“What are you reading?” He picked up the paperback novel on my nightstand and flipped it over. “Swann’s Way,” he whispered. He found the page I’d bookmarked. “Page thirty-seven.”

“Well, it’s a tough read. It’s a long stream of consciousness and—”

“Yeah, I read it. How long do you think it’ll take you to finish it?” He glided his hand over the cover and set it down again. “Days, weeks?”

“I don’t know…Maybe two weeks. Why?”

He inhaled sharply. “Listen to me, I know I made a lot of stupid promises to you in the last couple of months, but this is different.” He touched the book once more. “By the time you finish this book, I’ll have asked Eileen for a divorce.”

“What if I read it all tonight?”

“You think this is funny?”

“I’m sorry, Dav.”
