Roddy was still asleep. “Wake up, love. I’m going down to the kitchen to see if Mrs Rivers has anything for us.” After all these years, Mrs Rivers was still the cook.

He yawned and smiled sleepily. “Save something for me.”

I kissed him and left the room as he threw aside the bedspread. If I didn’t leave then, I’d wind up spending what was left of the day making love to him.

Wolcott stopped me in the foyer.

“Her ladyship has requested you join her in the drawing room.”

“Thank you.” I crossed to the hallway that would take me to the drawing room.

Mother was seated by the window, watching raindrops chase each other down the pane.

“It’s a gloomy day, isn’t it?” she asked.

“It is.” I leaned down and kissed her cheek, then sat beside her. “You wanted to see me?”

“Yes. Sir John is having a small dinner party this evening, and I’d like you and Roddy to escort me.”

Wolcott brought in a tea tray.

“Thank you,” she said.

He left, and Mother poured me a cup of tea.
