When Tommy casually informed me he was on his way to his next assignment, my heart sank. We’d been through a lot in recent days, and I could understand why enough had been enough and he was leaving me behind.

But then he said, “You’re coming along with me.”

“Where?”

“Africa.”

I had mixed emotions.

On the one hand, the Dark Continent had taken away Charlie, my first love.

On the other hand, it had given me Tommy, who, as far as I was concerned, was destined to be my last love.

So of course I went with him.

Once we arrived in Africa, we found that most of Tommy’s time was spent in tracking down greedy, corrupt bureaucrats. While he was out and about, I managed to find ways to keep myself busy.

He assured me on more than one occasion that it was a mission totally without risk, although occasionally he’d come home with bullet holes in his clothes and blood on the knife he carried.
