Unable to sit, unable to face her, Walter reeled away from the bed. 'When I was starting out I couldn't get finance. Then I met Donaldson. He said he had money he wanted to do something with. Said he'd tell me when he wanted repaying. I should've refused. I knew it wasn't clean but I was too relieved to care. I would've taken money from the devil to keep the winery back then.'

Her brain was starting to assimilate what he was saying. 'You knew he meant something like this?'

He threw the idea away from him. 'No.' His hands went up. 'It's been so long I thought he'd forgotten me.'
