Kapitel 28: We're in a crisis, Miss Lin.

Devon skipped her steps and hopped on the bed. She bounced a little, making her giggle at how soft it was.

"Come!" she invited, patting the surface of the mattress.

Lewis stood by the door, sighing helplessly. He had never sighed this much in his entire life; today was the first.

'How can she look so excited?' Lewis wondered internally, shaking his head as he strode in.

When he reached the bed, he plopped down on the edge of the bed. His palm against the mattress, his eyes on her.

"See? It's not that hard." She smiled brightly.

Unlike her, Lewis kept his poker face. It was easy for her, but it was a little challenging for him.

Just moments ago, the determination in her eyes would compel anyone to submit. But now, she's grinning like a little girl. Devon was surely playing with his heart.

"What if I want to sleep while hugging you?" He asked.

He didn't plan to do that, of course. Even holding hands didn't cross his mind. However, Lewis was intrigued to see her reaction.

"Hmm…" Devon pursed her lips as she pondered. "Will that make you feel good?"

"Don't make it sound like we're doing something that will make me feel good." Lewis clicked his tongue as the corner of his lips twitched.

"But you hired me because you want to feel good, no?"

"Don't make it sound so wrong, please." Lewis massaged his temple in distress.

Whether it was just his nature as an open-minded person, or just his imagination rearing perverse thoughts, it didn't matter. It made him feel dirty for having such thoughts while Devon was obviously referring to something more innocent.

Devon smacked her lips as she exhaled sharply. "I will be honest with you. Although I trust you, I'm still not ready."

"It's fine."

"However, after a long rumination, I understood I will never be prepared for it. Unless, I embrace the path I had chosen for myself. Since I signed an agreement with you, I fully trust my old judgment that you deserve my trust."

She smiled, completely determined at this. At this point, Lewis was already tired of wondering whether she was just brave or naive.

"Also, I'm always sharp with people. My intuition tells me you're a good person."

"Don't say that with such conviction." Lewis muttered tonelessly. "Who knows if I'm just faking it?"

Her grin grew broader upon his last remarks. "See? That's what most good people say."

Devon giggled, covering her lips with the back of her hand. Recalling his attempts on sabotaging his own image was a little ironic. Lewis wanted to protect their trust, and yet he kept on telling her ideas that he could be a bad person.

Bad people never admit they were bad. Rather, they twist their words to justify their actions.

Lewis stared at her as his eyes softened. At this point, he was exhausted from trying. He had tried his best; he was even determined to sacrifice his precious sleep.

However, he just couldn't win against her. Today, it was just defeat after defeat. Now, he conceded voluntarily.

"Alright. Whatever." He muttered, shaking his head as he lifted his legs up on the bed.

If Devon had decided, he should let her. It was her job, after all. He was the employer. So why was he acting as if his life would be in danger?

Devon watched him lie down and picked up the blanket to cover himself. A subtle smile resurfaced on her lip.

'I've encountered many men before. But he is the strangest.' She thought, biting her lower lip.

She was never comfortable around men. Especially, under the circumstance of being alone with a man inside the bedroom.

However, Devon just couldn't put up her guard around him. If Lewis had planned to hurt her or take advantage of her, he had many opportunities to do so the entire day.

Yet, instead of doing that, he proposed to sleep separately. She knew if she didn't insist on this, she would be alone here. Devon was not that heartless to let him suffer for her.

Just like him, Devon slid herself under the blanket. She rolled on her side, facing him. Lewis was lying flat on his back, staring at the ceiling.

"Do you want me to close the lights?" Devon asked, as it was bright in the room. She didn't know where, though. He could instruct her, anyway.

Lewis didn't answer. Instead, he clapped his hand once. As soon as he did, the pendant light turned off, while the dim lights from each corner brightened up.

"Woah…" In awed, Devon looked around before she turned to him. "You're a mage?"

"Technology, miss." Lewis cast her a look. "Mages, mana, fairies, those are just fantasies that don't exist in real life. We don't live in a magical world."

Lewis uttered in a flat tone as he stared at the ceiling. He could feel her gaze from his side, but he ignored it.

"I can only think that you are probably writing a fantasy novel when the incident happened. That's why you subconsciously believe in those things. But, no. Those things don't exist. I'm sorry to break your bubble."

Devon remained silent as she listened to his deep, soothing voice.

"A land without magic? Is this country poor?" She inquired.

Her silly question made him chuckle. He pondered whether to answer that or just let it go.

"Maybe." Lewis still answered, regardless. "Maybe not."

After he answered, silence ensued. Lewis kept his eyes open, as his mind was very active. When time passed, he cocked his head to her.

Devon fell asleep on her side, facing him. A subtle smile turned up on his lips as he rolled to his side, facing her.

Under the dim lights, he stared at her. As if etching every little detail of her facial structure in his mind.

"You never sleep before me." He whispered, raising his hand as he carefully brushed the stray hair off her face.

In the past, Devon never fell asleep before Lewis. It would always be Lewis who would just crash on the bed first. But now, she's sleeping soundlessly just minutes after lying down.

"I think we're in a crisis, Miss Lin."
