After a normal day at going about my daily routine, with no headache from the previous night's events, it felt weirdly nice. I had come home early in the morning to get ready for my day and left the house with Mel. I refused to come out to meet Mel during lunch break as I didn't want to see him. I sat down and tried to figure out how to change the dress around a little, but it turned out futile whenever he came to my mind.
Working at the bookstore removed all thoughts of what had occurred and what was to come. Though the customers were becoming fewer as the days passed, the work to be done around never decreased. There were always books to move, new books, stationaries and boxes to bring, and shelves to clean. But the three hours weren't spent in vain as I got a return from it.
I was trudging back home, hopping from tile to tile to forget about my worries when I felt a gloved hand on my shoulder and a hand over my mouth. My arm was tugged and before I could react, darkness enveloped me. I felt the ground under my feet shift from solid rock to grass.
My heart seemed to have reached my head at the sudden jolt under my feet. I swivelled around, mad at the person I knew was capable of doing this trick.
"You! Seriously!" I shouted as I felt the adrenaline surge inside me. "There was a better way of doing it."
"This just says how alert you are," replied Lucas with a grin, circling about the round stoned pavement. "We might have to spar to get you prepped for those surprises."
He wasn't wearing any jacket today, although his shirt and pants were black. He now wore his hair shaggy hair in a knot, revealing the undercut and a hidden ear piercing on each ear. As his hair was considerably longer than the first time we had met, I had failed to notice those piercings underneath it.
I liked the previous one better as the short hair that hung near his forehead, making him look more manly. At the same time, I doubted how even his hair had the magic to grow fast. Even with the change, he was no less admirable than before.
"Hey, this was totally unexpected," I remarked. "Who would try to pull anyone in under the broad light?"
"You never know. Life has in store more surprises than the eye can see."
He charged and I sidestepped. But he already saw that coming and shifted swiftly. I only knew to let him come close enough for me to run from his grasp in the short time. I didn't run fast enough since I knew he wasn't my enemy, finally getting caught in his arms.
"If you don't play and fight well, you will get a grave punishment," he stated as he tickled me.
I shouted with laughter, begging him to stop. He had found one weakness and he could use it to his advantage if he liked.
"What shall it be?" I asked, half-dreadful of it.
"Two hundred laps around this stone," he answered. "Or tickles. Whichever I deem fit for the way you shall play today."
"But—"
"No buts. We will get to work and your hard work will determine what I have in store for you."
I groaned at his statement and quickly did a few stretches to warm myself up. He wanted me to limit them as in reality, I wouldn't be given too much time to make it alive.
I was glad I had worn boots today without realising that a duel lied ahead. I had to keep swinging and ducking, trying to use more speed and less strength with my thin frame. The sun was close to the horizon, yet he wasn't done with assessing me or training me even in thirty minutes.
I was so tired, and I knew this wasn't going to end until he saw me all worked up. I had to attack him once without him hijacking my head.
So the next time he ran towards me, I jumped up a few stone steps and spun in the air to distract him. He stopped and stepped back, giving me the time to land diagonally behind him. I got my leg to lock his ankle and throw him off balance on his back, ultimately sitting on his front while panting.
He smiled as he heaved, admitting defeat. I could hardly believe that I was able to get on top of the powerful man, who definitely had warrior instincts, and avoid all his head-to-head teases and pokings.
"You didn't hear me the last time, did you?" he asked as he huffed a laugh. "You didn't hear me now either."
"Why? What did you say?" I questioned with a puzzled look all over my face.
"Nothing of importance. I guess the sparring helped you to close the walls of your head. You must always keep it like that."
"Even in front of you? It's not like you are going to see much in there."
"In front of me as well as the others. Nobody gets to explore your space until they have your permission. An emergency is another issue. You don't know when something I have will be used against you."
"I find that hard to believe after the promise you created."
"It will be transient. Nothing lasts forever."
"You're a pessimist. I want to try shutting off the walls again. Could we practice that instead of sparring? I'm too tired to move a finger."
We lied down on the stone pavement and breathed deeply, watching the stars appear one by one. After five minutes, we were in the same position with him tutoring me on how to control the walls.
"Try concentrating by shutting your eyes tight," he said. "And try imagining this. You have to prevent me, the enemy, from entering your fort, which is your head. So you must pull up the heavy gates. Think of the wall between two houses and countries. That's how solid it must be."
I tried to imagine what he had stated. I couldn't prevent him from barging in and breaking the wall I had build.
"Make it solid," he ordered. "It must actually exist. Don't make it an illusion, for people can break down a door."
When his approach wasn't solidifying my wall, I decided to think back on how I had pulled it the first time. I was determined to throw him down and not have him steal any information from my head. I kept rethinking the whole process until I heard Lucas exclaim.
"You have broken my head," he said with a grunt. "That wall is way too strong. What did you do to get that up?"
"Just thinking about how I could never let you into my head, no matter what it cost me," I replied with surprise.
"And that's the spirit. That's how it must always be between us and the rest of the world."
Finally accomplished a month of continuous writing and completing the fiftieth chapter of the book. That's two milestones achieved thanks to all of you.
