36.58% Sentinel’s Rising / Chapter 14: Upgrades

Kapitel 14: Upgrades

"That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard." Jax's face was stone cold, and his sentinel was as flaccid as it could ever be, even with her succubus form still on, as she never bothered turning it off. Succie was shocked, not even a little bit of pink on the cheeks? This was the first time she questioned if she was actually a succubus.

'Is he gay?' She thought seriously for a second, as it would make sense, but-

"I'm not gay moron. I just have common sense. I'm not gonna throw myself at a stranger just cuz she looks hot. That's just rape and I also don't want to get my account deleted for unconsented sex on top of the police storming my house to arrest me."

"What! That can actually happen?!" Apparently, this succubus didn't read the forums enough. Sexual acts had heavy restrictions in the game which made sense. It was about that same protocol as it would be in the real world, but you would get your avatar deleted, and banned from purchasing a new helmet or other merchandise from AX. There were also a lot of system contracts that people would have to go through where both parties consented and questioned whether it was consensual or forced.

In the case that it was forced, the company would do a personal investigation with the government in order to protect the harassed player and bring justice. Would this actually happen? Jax wasn't sure. It seemed like a lot for the company to do and he felt there was something more to it all, but couldn't be bothered right now.

He didn't plan to have sex in a game, he'd rather just watch porn.

"I-I don't really know exactly I'm sorry. I just felt I could trust you. Heck, you aren't even reacting to my demon form which makes me happy since I can now talk to someone normally. It always makes me feel stuffy when I have to conceal myself. It's like being wrapped in too many blankets."

Jax sighed, she was really a child, blindly sharing personal stuff with someone like him. He knew he could be quite the asshole at times so he felt a bit bad for her. She also reminded him a little bit of his sister, mostly the childlike cheeriness, but that was also her downfall as a woman.

He didn't like someone as immature as that.

"Let's move on. We all have our secrets and you've shared way too much. Just take me to the dungeon and we can talk more then." Jax wanted to get to their destination quickly. He had spent too much time talking with her and needed to pick up his pace to reach the top.

They traveled for about 15 or so minutes, and ran into a few wolves which were quickly brought down before arriving at a normal-looking cave along a cliffside.

"This is it, the Goblin's Den." Succie said as they could both feel the eerie aura surrounding the mouth of the cave. It was definitely the dungeon, as there was a system interface hovering about the dungeon.

[Beginner Dungeon - The Den of Goblins]

[select difficulty - normal - hard ]

It had two modes, but hard looked grayed out, meaning he would have to finish normal first. What concerned him was that there was still no notification about a clear for this even though the top players were already past the level cap of this dungeon.

It capped at level 10 so he didn't think it would be so difficult, but he must be wrong.

"It's really hard to complete. I couldn't even get very far from the entrance before dying. There were goblins waiting in ambush so I couldn't even fight back even though they were only level 5." Succie told Jax as he was focused for a while on the entrance.

'So they are intelligent. I don't know how much, but they have a basic sense of tactics it seems.' In most games, goblins were depicted as stupid or with low-level intelligence. If there were a lot of them, and they could work together, the two wouldn't stand a chance.

"If what you say is true, it would be better for you to reach level 5 to regain a skill before continuing. Also, I will need you to lend me some money so we can upgrade our gear. If it is as hard as you describe, and as much as I believe it will be, we will need more Uncommon gear at least before attempting."

"Uncommon gear!? You know where to get that!!"

"Yes now be quiet you're loud."

"Okay! Here you go!"

[Player Sucky Succie has traded you 6 copper and 15 silver!]

[Player Sucky Succie has invited you to her party!]

[Player Sucky Succie has sent a friend request!]

Jax slapped his forehead. 'This idiot really doesn't understand when she is being exploited. It makes me wonder how much her party took from her.' He only meant for her to lend him enough for him to purchase the cooldown gun. He could technically already duel wield but hasn't needed to use it yet.

He looked at the other notifications and sighed. He accepted the party invitation but ignored the friend request, neither accepting nor declining. He had to think about it. She definitely had potential, especially with this new race and equipment, but he had no idea what kind of play style she should go for.

He wanted to at least put her on the right track before parting ways. "Would a berserker class work better for her?" He mumbled.

"What did you say?" Succie asked curiously, tilting her head like a dog.

"Nothing. By the way what class did you choose when you hit level 10?" He saw that she was still a tank, so she figured she got that taken away when dying as well.

"Oh I didn't choose one, I died before I could choose." She said it like it didn't matter at all but Jax was the one ready to cry now.

"Jesus Christ you are an idiot." He didn't bother hiding his thoughts now. It was too much work to hold it in.

"Hey! That's not nice! Although I don't know if I can choose a class again, I think I'll do fine with tank!" If she couldn't choose her own class, the system may have just forced her to keep tank for all they knew. It was just something to wait and see for the results.

"Whatever, you screwed yourself so lets just focus on the dungeon stuff. We are heading back to town, leave a marker here."

"Marker? What's that?" Succie turned her head like a dog again. Not even bothered to react anymore, Jax answered, "It's used on your minimap. You can leave way points by opening it up so you don't get too lost. It isn't very detailed but it at least gives you a sense of direction."

"Oh that's so cool!" Succie giggled as she began making tons of way points on random spots around her. Jax ignored her, too tired to react to her stupidity and started walking back to town.

'She is the definition of an airhead.'

It took them a while to get back since the dungeon was in the high-level area and Succie was slow with her 5 points of speed. They also got attacked by monsters and players but gained some good loot.

By the time they got to the entrance of the town, Succie was already level 5 again, re-unlocking her level 5 skill [Fortification]. Jax thought it was a really good skill. It allowed the user to protect themselves against high burst attacks. It was a passive skill, that activated when the user was about to take damage equal to 20% of their max health or more. It would fortify their health, giving them a huge boost in damage reduction that lasted for a few seconds.

The cooldown was long, 2 minutes to be exact, which is a long time in a fight between a player at least. In the right hands, it could be powerful, sadly it was in Sucky Succie's hands. She didn't even know how to work around it, allowing herself to take a lot of damage without realizing it was still on cooldown.

They reached the blacksmith and went straight to the old man Timold. It was crowded around him as all the players wanted to see the uncommon equipment that Jax had 'unlocked'. He wove his way between them with the now concealed Succie grabbing onto the corner of his shirt like a cliché anime character from a RomCom.

Jax eventually made eye contact with the old man, who quickly smiled and got out of his chair.

"I've got business with this lad so if ya ain't buyin' my wares then fuck off!"
