"You have become quite chatty since you moved to Phoenix, Samiel," Rex commented. "Perhaps, it is time you returned to your post in the Order. Our city needs you."
Samiel did not take the threat to heart.
"The King wishes to abuse his power to hide his shame. Then, the one who brings you here must be quite interesting." He laughed.
Abaddon did not want to admit the truth to Samiel, but he needed his help. If nothing else, they were friends who had grown up together. Most of their old compatriots had chosen to close up and Sleep for millennia, or they had hidden in their mountains and valleys.
He decided to speak his concerns out rightly.
"We have Soul Resonance," Abaddon said as he followed Samiel to his lab.
His black eyebrows with small flecks of gold lifted as he looked at the lab. He had been expecting to see a medical lab, but he found something different. Judging from the smells and the various food ingredients, he could only guess that it was a molecular gastronomy lab.
Samiel did not show embarrassment at the exposure of the dark secret, but Abaddon could not let it go.
"What happened to the medical prodigy of all the realms. Your talents rival your angelic father's, and he was a relic who had travelled across countless worlds. Imagine what he would say if he found you brewing wine." He laughed.
"Govad finds my creations quite intriguing. My cocktails kept his last Christmas party going on for seven days. Rumour has it that some people are still drunk." Samiel had a hint of pride.
"The medical world has lost its greatest champion." Abaddon sat down on one of the high stools.
"On the contrary, my disciple is now the greatest champion. She will surpass me." Once again, Samiel had undeniable pride.
Abaddon thought of Parvana, the heralded goddess of medicine in Farallon and the hope for the Haema dynasty for the next a thousand years.
"She is something." He nodded.
"You are digressing. Tell me about the Soul Resonance." Samiel ordered.
Soul Resonance was not a rare phenomenon, but it was rarely as strong as his case with Aisling. The effect happened when there was inherent compatibility of primordial souls.
The feeling was inexplicable to someone who had not experienced it.
Those with light compatibility described Soul Resonance as the feeling of meeting an old friend. The sense of familiarity would lead to a quick bond of friendship, which sometimes, not always, would grow into something more.
However, those with a high level of compatibility could not describe it so simply.
Some said it was a visceral hunger for another person that would gnaw at their soul. Others described it as being parched and lost in the desert and finding the only thing that could quench the deep thirst. Yet another group had compared it to drifting in darkness and then, they had found a beacon of light.
Everyone who had experienced it had their description, and the excessive use of metaphors and similes made it difficult to keep reliable records.
But one thing was certain: it was an overpowering attraction.
For those who could not control the overwhelming power of Soul Resonance, their destruction would be inevitable.
A few were unable to lead normal lives after experiencing the connection because they would rather not be apart from their soulmate, even for a moment.
It was an addiction.
Of course, there was the solution of Tethering which allowed soulmates to be separate and at peace because there would be a constant psychic link.
Unfortunately, on occasion, some soulmates would choose to sink into a Mind Meld after the Tethering. An occasional Mind Meld was not bad because there was a profoundness of sharing one mind with a soulmate.
However, the feeling of being with someone so intimately and sharing thoughts and sensations could also be addictive.
The Mind Meld could become debilitating.
Unfortunately, the Soul Resonance could not be ignored.
Once a person felt a strong Soul Resonance, they could not go back to the ordinary.
"Abaddon!" Samiel barked out, snapping Rex from his thoughts.
"Sorry, I have a lot on my mind," Abaddon said.
"Is the Soul Resonance overwhelming you?" Samiel asked with genuine concern.
The King he knew had never been one to drift off in thought or have an absentminded expression.
"Not yet. I have my ways of keeping it under control for now."
If he had not been keeping himself in check, he would not have been able to separate from Aisling twice. The fact that he had only seen her two times and could still be calm was a testament to his self-control.
"How comes you have never felt the resonance before? With your power, you would have been able to detect the resonance. Unless it is a soul that has just come of age." There was disapproval in Samiel's eyes.
"She is from the outside world." He responded quietly.
Still, Abaddon had inexplicable guilt because souls came of age and became stable at twenty. Aisling was only twenty-two years old.
"I thought that people from the mainland no longer experienced strong Soul Resonance because of the weak magical energy?" Samiel was shocked.
