CH87: AMBUSH IN THE FOREST

There are six major combat divisions in the Nigerian Army.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 82nd divisions.

The 1st division was responsible for safeguarding its Area of Responsibility [AOR] covering the North-western flank of the country. The 2nd division was charged with protecting the South-Western flank. The 3rd division had to secure its AOR covering the North-Eastern flank while the 82nd division's AOR covered the South-Eastern flank of the country's border.

The 6th and 7th divisions played a more specialised role.

The 6th division was charged with securing the oil-rich Niger Delta region. Aside from the usual duties of the Armed Forces, their mandate also included the protection of Oil wells and various other oil installations and infrastructure.
