Kapitel 15: I'm Hayden

Hayden had been sitting on the couch all day in deep thoughts. He had gotten a call from the automobile company which was one of the numerous businesses the Esteban's owned. He had successfully separated the two worlds. When he was in City A he was a different person, the reputable Doctor Harland and when in City B, He was CEO of RYE Corporation. He was appointed the CEO because of how well the business had grown ever since his involvement. He had all the bright ideas ranging from dealing with the underdogs and the governmental authorities. He had suggested they did a few legitimate businesses to act as a cover-up for what they majored in.
No doubt, his grandfather had been right, marriage alliance with the Walkers made things easier for them.
He was going to take them high up so that when they came crashing they wouldn't survive the fall.
After getting off the phone with Black Jack on the latest development on the opposing drug cartel's activities he relaxed a bit to think.
Black Jack had worked with his father for years and he was a huge man about 6 ft 5 tall with a really broad chest like that of a bouncer. He was in charge of major underground operations and majored in eliminating things and people deemed as threats.
Hayden decided to head out to the Mall to pick up a few things, given the kind of environment he lived in, he knew accidents happen and how easy it was to be poisoned hence, he cooked all his meals.
He drove a small Benz, he could afford a Porche but given the fact that he was a doctor with meager salary at least compared to how much he controlled, he had to live accordingly.
The closest mall to his house was the Davies mall. Plus, he was fond of the place. He wore black Jean, a blue vest and a Black Jacket.
He parked his car in parking lot 3, which was few meters away from where Mara had parked hers. He had arrived a few minutes after they did.
Mara stepped into the mall and was instantly recognized by most workers who paused their various activities to greet her.
They walked straight to the food section. Chloe had made a list in her head as to what she was going to get, oats, milk, rice, bagels, noodles she tried to mentally recall them picking whatever she recalled into her cart. Hayden had been in the same line and wanted to get Oats too. She had been distracted with trying to recall the items in her head as they both stretched their hands at the same time to reach out for the same can of Oats causing it to fall to the ground.
"Oh my! She gasped, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention" she said as she bent down to pick the can of oats, from the floor...
"No it's okay" he said immediately as his eyes met hers, she looked familiar, he tried to phantom where he had seen her but he just couldn't.
Chloe waved the can of oats, over his face, she had noticed he was lost in thoughts,
"Sorry," he said jerking back to reality.
Thank you, he said politely, revealing his white gap teeth.
He was quite handsome Chloe couldn't help but admit it.
She picked up another can of Oats and placed it in her trolley as she continued shopping. Her mind was somewhat focused on the handsome young man she just met. She got all the things she needed and walked to the billing counter.
Hayden trailed right behind her. Mara had noticed the little scene that just occurred as she clenched her fists and gritted her teeth in excitement.
Chloe could read her expression clearly, she simply laughed and nodded her head back and forth. She brought out her card to pay when she felt a hand touch hers from behind her and a think voice that whispered
" please Let me"
Chloe went pale and her neck stiffened she couldn't understand what she was feeling. Her heart rate was twice as fast as it was 2 minutes ago.
She tried to blurt out words like "oh no please it's okay thanks for the offer" but the words never left her mouth. She froze for some seconds.
Hayden handed his debit card to the cashier. He invited his pin in the POS device and paid for her products.
"Thank you" she managed to say.
She had fervently hoped in her mind that Mara was distracted and had not seen what just happened.
She slowly lifted her head in Mara's direction as her eyes met hers she could see the bright expression on her face and the wink made it clear to Chloe that she saw it all.
Chloe moved away from the line carrying her grocery bag as she walked out of the Mall
Mara trailed her from behind.
" Hey, girl stop!! Hold on" she said in a humorous tone.
"Not now Mara," she said rolling her eyes.
"Okay fine" they both walked out of the mall towards the car.
Chloe looked at Mara in a confused tone. She was quite surprised that Mara hadn't pestered her further.
"Fine? No way you're letting this go"
A sudden outburst of laughter left Mara's mouth.
"Oh I knew it," Chloe said gritting her teeth.
"Come on girl he ain't bad looking at all"
"I know... It's just I'm not sure I'm ready for this sort of thing."
"I think you are."
Just then Hayden walked out of the Mall. Although his sudden interest in her was something she felt uneasy about. She hadn't perceived that sort of interest when the bumped into each other in the mall, what changed?
"What are you thinking?" Mara asked.
"Nothing" she snapped out of her thoughts. "I'm probably letting the detective in me overshadow my sense of judgement."
Hayden walked briskly towards where he had parked his car. His car was just two cars away from theirs. Her heart stopped as she noticed him approaching. Each step, he took got him closer to her which made her tremble.
Finally, he stopped and said hi to Mara. He stopped directly in front of Chloe and smiled.
" Sorry, I never got your name"
"Oh, I'm Chloe"
"I'm Hayden" he said handing over his Card to Chloe.
"You can hit me up if you'd love to grab a cup of coffee sometime."
Chloe reached for the card.
"Alright, It was nice to meet you Hayden and thank you for earlier"
"The pleasure is all mine" he responded once again with one of the cutest smile Chloe had ever seen.
Hayden wasn't one known to be interested in women,
what changed?
