The more concerned Celina's and Xia's eyes grew, the higher Eve lifted her chin and the more she straightened her shoulders. It wasn't a conscious gesture, and it didn't fool anyone into thinking that she was as collected as she tried to appear. The darkness of the underground laboratory and the dim lights of their torches didn't stop everyone from seeing how white Eve's face was, and Xia's sharp eyes didn't miss the way her free hand tightened into a fist.

Eve's eyes were still locked on Victor's, but she reacted to the words of others with her expression and her posture. It wasn't a stare that made everything else disappear—Eve looked at Victor in a way that one looks at a threat they can't afford to leave out of their field of vision.
