Kapitel 41: Vincent's First Meeting with Roger
It was a normal sunny day in Nokoroy Island in the East Blue, and there was a young man who was going around his village while holding a book. This was a young Vincent who wanted to learn everything there is to learn in the world. He was currently going around Kameeraska Village which was his home village and was known for their rare animals and plants. He was a bookworm and would always go to the bookstore and buy some books or spend his whole day in a library. He was so into books that he would sneak into the library to read during the night when he couldn't go to sleep. Even if he was a bookworm, he still did his regular exercises in order for him not to get tired easily while reading his books. Due to his everyday exercises, he had an average build and he was also quite handsome with his orange-red hair.
Vincent was an only child and he lived with his mom his whole life. He didn't have a dad because according to his mom, he died during one of his adventures and after that she settled in this island on her own to raise little Vincent. He wasn't really sad about it since he didn't know who his dad was, but he was very close to his mom who used to tell him stories about her adventures with his dad. His mom was also a curious person like Vincent and wanted to know everything she could in her life. Through this, Vincent loved to learn about anything new and was excited to see anything that was out of the ordinary. Because of this habit of wanting to learn something new, he started to learn the secrets of the shops in his village. He would get some techniques or anything that he could put in his journal just to take note of it. He is also doing this to make his sick mom happy as he wanted to spend his last moments with his mom while sharing their knowledge with each other.
After a few months, his mother died because of an illness and Vincent's drive to learn everything was triggered even more as he didn't want anyone experiencing what he experienced since he didn't know what his mother's sickness was and he could only watch as his mother grow weaker everyday with him not being able to do anything because of his lack of knowledge. This was also because the village's doctors did not know what was happening with his mom. He decided to dedicate his life to learning to honor his mother's wish for him to travel the world and try to record everything for her.
(Flashback)
<Vincent POV>
"I'm sorry mom, I couldn't do anything to save you. If I only had known what was killing you. This village didn't have a doctor who could save you." I said as I was crying beside my mother's bed. "It's okay son, to be able to share my knowledge with you and talk with you everyday is already good enough for me. I'm just sorry that I can't be with you to see you grow up and have a family. Forgive your mother for leaving early." said my mom who was named Veronica as she held my face with tears streaming down her face. "Just promise me when you decide to go out to sail, find some friends and share everything with them. Make a lot of memories with them. Then find yourself a woman to marry, have a family, and live peacefully. Just always remember that I'll always be watching you wherever you may go. I love you my son." as my mom said that she gave me a box that had note saying 'Open this when you're ready -Mom' and closed her eyes and died with a smile on her as she heard me reply to her "I love you too mom." as I replied to her my tears wouldn't stop falling while I was hugging her. I buried my mom the next day while holding the box she gave me yesterday. I decided to open it and what I saw made me cry again as it was a locket that when opened, showed my mom's and my picture on it. 'I promise you mom, I will grant your wish.' said Vincent in his mind as he wore the locket and went back to his house.
(Flashback End)
After his mother died, Vincent devoted his time in studying and practicing medicine to the point that he could at least qualify to be a decent doctor. He didn't practice anymore since he didn't want to be a doctor in the future. But he still learned the theoretical aspect of medicine and he continues to research about new ways on how to treat diseases. He usually helps around the village and the other villages in the island to try and see if he could help out people who can't afford to go to the doctor. All in all, Vincent wanted to grant his mother's wish of him sailing with friends and having a family. He was just waiting for the right time to set sail.
A few years later, Vincent became known as "The Professor" by the people in the island because he was using his knowledge to teach the kids in the villages and making the village prosper more due to his suggestions. Vincent still didn't find anyone to sail with since he was waiting for someone who could make his journey meaningful and all other people were very bland and he wouldn't have an interesting journey with them.
As he was sitting on the port, he saw a small ship that was about to dock on the port. He saw that there were two people who were on the ship and he felt that these two people weren't simple people. They were the first people that Vincent thought were "interesting" so Vincent decided to tail them from the shadows to see what they want and what their purpose of sailing was.
<Vincent POV>
I was currently tailing them, and making sure that they don't notice me so that they don't get alarmed and leave the island right away. I wanted to join them in their journey because they were an interesting pair, but I don't know how to tell them. 'I should stop tailing them and confront them so I could ask to join them.' said Vincent in his mind as he was currently hiding.
"Whoever you are you better come out of there or else I will come get you myself" I heard the voice of one of them and he was the one wearing the straw hat. 'What?! They noticed me? How? My concealment techniques couldn't be felt by anyone living and visiting this village. As I thought, they weren't normal people.' I thought as my excitement grew as I finally found the people who can help me achieve my mother's wish. "I'm sorry for tailing you both, but you both were new to the village and I was interested in you people. My name is Vincent." I said but I didn't expect the straw hat guy to reply, "Oh I really was correct, Rayleigh! There was someone there HAHAHAHAHA! I'm Roger! Nice to meet you Vincent!" I was surprised and asked "So you didn't know that I was there the whole time?" and he replied "No I didn't, but I had the feeling someone was tailing us." I was amazed by his intuition and said "What do you both do?" he replied "We both want to turn the world upside down!" I was surprised at his reply and was speechless as he continued "Oy Vincent! This might be destiny that we met here, so do you want to join me and Rayleigh as we travel the seas?" I was surprised at his question as I was waiting for the right time to ask them to let me join them. "Destiny? Well since I want to travel the world, learn new things, and achieve my mother's wish, I would take you up on the offer and join you." I said calmly while hiding my excitement. "Well, welcome to the crew Vincent! I hope you can achieve your mother's wish in the future" Roger held out his hand and I shook it. Not knowing that it was the start of our legend as the people who would be the first to sail to the last island of the Grandline.
